Virgin Media Discussion Thread

This seems to be new?

https://www.virginmedia.com/myusage

"Your latest Virgin Media Best Bits is ready. It’s packed with loads of useful information – like how you’ve used your package with us over the past month. Plus, recommendations on how to make the most of your plan in the future."

...Although mine barely shows anything.

I seem to get very sporadic emails from VM about usage, would be kinda interesting to have a long term graph of usage.

Considering coming back to Virgin from Sky... I haven't been keeping up with news... do they still have the issues with the model getting overwhelmed?

Oh oh. So my router turned up. Plugged it all in but I can't get any Internet. Phoned up. They said they have seen it connect and to wait 3 hours for it to settle down. I'm not convinced as I haven't had even a sniff of Internet from it. Although the lights did go green. But now it's permanently yellow. Will phone them up tomorrow. What's the likely outcome?

Do Virgin throttle? Investigating a weird issue with my Emby server with no solution in sight, currently throttling is the latest suspicion.

That's what I thought, the mystery continues. Thanks.

ANyone having issues getting to yahoo.com via virgin. I use Sky email and cannot get to it, yahoo.co.uk is good..
Ping yahoo.co.uk no issue, .com comes back with cannot find...

Thanks

It's looking like I'm back with Team Red... Bigger bundle, M350 + 5GB SIM, plus £75 gift card for £47/mth, obtained via the Blue Light Card... I think this is a decent deal

I have dealt with online chat, local rep and mates rates rep, and none of them could match this BLC online deal. For those with a BLC, there was also a link for existing Virgin customers, but I obviously could not progress to see the deals, but I want to share for those eligible that didn't know. The same deals are also available via vivup (work scheme program).

I think I'm going to use the SIM family plan deal to add family members on the 4GB for £6 plan, which should reduce to £4 if I understand the family plan deal correctly.

You quickly begin to realise that the budget they have for a new acquisition is generally the same, it’s just applied differently. I get M500/5GB SIM/TV/Phone for £51.99 and £130 cashback on Quidco. At least you didn’t fall for the ‘mates rates’ scam which is just a pure referral earner for the person referring you.

To be fair, the mates rates offer was the same £47 except no £75 gift card on top... from normal rep the same deal was £52 after negotiating, or Quidco plus Virgin website was also around this price, so Mates Rates is a bit cheaper.

However, I agree with your point that there is not a big difference. Based on comments I've read, I was expected Mates Rates to waive the £35 initial fee and maybe also put some credit on the account, but wasn't happening.

Mates rates and Field Sales will never be cheaper than online + Quidco/TCB like for like - the referral bonus/commission comes out of the acquisition budget which means you get less of what is allocated.

My service is supposed to be active and my self-install kit getting delivered tomorrow but unsurprisingly I've heard absolutely nothing and have no indication of it being dispatched. It's not boding well. Been caught up on a meeting literally all day today (it's still ongoing) so I haven't had a chance to call them yet. Anyone have any idea of how late it can be before dispatch info is provided or even if it is at all?

£100 to upgrade to this though, will this finally improve the over subscribed hell for many users?
Thats the estimated cost to VM per property to upgrade compared with £500-600 for Openreach to do the equivalent. So this won't be the customer cost as such, new customers will pay whatever the going rate is for install which covers any final connection to the property, running the cabling around/inside and a bit towards the modem but obviously they made the real money on the monthly cost to the customer. I would expect once they have replaced HFC in an area any new customers will be put on the new connection until they gradually get the numbers changed over then they might make only quicker products be available on that as well to nudge some others over (with or without an upgrade fee of some sort) then others might get changed if there is a fault with their line etc etc... think you get the idea :) Eventually they can then disconnect and removed the coax runs from the green cabs to the street/property although I'm not sure how they will handle the TV side of things. Maybe they will keep the coaxial inside properties for now or change to IPTV instead and the set top box just connects to your hub instead or something.

That £100 seems optimistic, I think they are basing it on assuming that a duct put down 30 years ago by a cable franchise hasn't been hit by anything and requires digging back out.

From experience of dealing with failed install reporting nationally, construction related fails weren’t that high, and most could be cleared/pulled through by contractors in short order, the bigger issue was usually where notice needed to be given for street works, but we live in a different environment now. I mean in theory VM could be able to use OR ducting now - that would be ironic.

I think they are already. My brother lives on an estate built not long after Telewest cabled our town so those houses missed out. However they have been leafleted and can order VM there now even though they haven't dug up all the paths. They have put up a few new green cabinets on the entrance to the estate so would guess they are then running fibre from that through OR ducts to the properties.
