Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had to go through VM support as it was over 2 weeks since I got an O2 sim and no sign of the Volt mobile data doubling or a VM BB upgrade. Got my SH4 delivered today, speedtests showing a nice 950/50 connection (500/35 previously). Not bad for £2 more than I was paying before (between BB and 3 x mobile sims).

How long did it take after you contacted VM to get your Volt benefits? I've had an O2 Sim now for 2 weeks and no sign of my Volt benefits. Haven't contacted either O2 or VM yet

Well this is my graph for the last 8 hours the first block of red is when an engineer was here (evidently not worked) and the last block of red ignore router was off long story.

so does anyone have any ideas? Engineer went into the cabinet changed my plug over to another and also said it was drawing too much power so he fixed that and then said if it doesn’t fix it it could be noise in area from another house.. surely not please help :(

Mine is similar Quinnaay look here

I have a small problem with the 3.1 Downstream QAM and to me it's noise on the line but VM keep saying it's ok!! when it's clearly not, I have suffered from noise before but it's never effected my speeds in any way.

Look it's changed again it should be 4096

3.1 Downstream channels
Channel Channel Width (MHz) FFT Type Number of Active Subcarriers Modulation (Active Profile) First Active Subcarrier (Hz)
159 96 4K 1880 QAM2048 392

Just done a speedtest

Maybe post your hubs stats over on VM forum.

I got my o2 sim on 22nd Nov and got my BB speed upgrade 10th Dec.

I didn't contact VM or o2. (not got my double data yet though)

I went for the £6 sim as that is plenty for my uses.

Originally had £9 VM sim and BB @ 200Mbps now 350Mbps for £3 less a month. :)

I did the same, on 350 which is more like 380Mbps :)

How much you paying for the broadband?

Have you posted a thread on the virgin community forums as they are often pretty helpful. Here is mine, it seems to have got worse since I bought a new router. Not like yours though and I actually don't have any issues gaming.

I’ve literally this minute made a post hopefully I can get sorted as 3 engineers later still no success and I’m losing the will to live

@Rainmaker and others that were giving me some tips.

I managed to get Virginmedia to analyse and they found a fault in some of the configuration of my hub4 somehow (not sure what it was they didn't tell me).

anyway following that, I'm now consistently getting over 940mbps on speed test and nperf etc... uploads 53mbps.

I took the opportunity to tidy up my server "rack" (i.e. some diy rough and ready shelving!) and gave me a chance to check all the cabling and make sure everything was in order. Even via wifi now I'm getting over 800mbps which is good enough for me.

So thanks to all of you that gave me some tips and tricks.

Excellent news! :) I'm glad you got it sorted in time for Christmas.

Compared to what it was like before - it's hugely better!

This fairly consistent now. My Deco AX60's also report 900+ mbps and they're only 1gb network backhaul. Wish I had the X90s as they have a 2.5gbe port - but meh, I'm happy as it is!

How long will it be until 2.5gbe becomes fairly standard I wonder? Virgin are already talking about 2gig+ internet.

It seems crazy that 1gb is now available - especially when you consider 28k modems aren't that long ago (at least from my perspective!).

I honestly cannot wait until CityFibre finish doing the are a so I have a viable alternative to the farce that is Virgin media. Tried to get them to upgrade to 1GIG and all they do is screw things up offering you terrible deals. Then when you actually try take them up on it they muck it up and say it was wrong. The live chat has to be one of the worst experiences of poor customer services I have ever had. 3 HOURS chatting to someone and got nowhere. :p

Yes VM CS isn't great - I just whatsapp them now and I get a response fairly quickly usually - but it's fairly generic - but what do you expect?! Though I must admit I have had the problem solved on most occasions.

Excellent! Now you just need to sort out your bufferbloat and you're golden. :D The next SuperHub has 2.5Gb but personally I'd rather just go to 10Gb where possible. Obviously if you have APs etc on 2.5 then you need to make sure everything's capable of negotiating, but at least things are heading in the right direction, finally.

I have a draytek 2962 which is a great router but probably overkill for me, but it has some key features that I like (i.e. OpenVPN Server) and a few other bits and pieces - I don't know if there's a way of programmatically or even via the UI in improving this, it does have a plethora of QOS capability which if I'm honest I haven't explored.
