Virgin Media Discussion Thread

They must have turned it on at midnight or something.

I checked yesterday and no 1Gig. Then read the article today, and checked again. Now its on.

They did well to get it completed slightly earlier than the end of the month.

I'm upgrading to 1 Gigabit, the Hub 4 will be here next week, and I'm thinking of going with modem mode and having a "better" router. As I've been on the Hub 3 for god knows how many years, and using that as the router, I am out of the loop on what's good and what's not. I did do a search on this thread but it brought back a lot of pages so I thought I'd ask.

Can someone recommend a good router for 1 Gigabit? Thanks.

I'll switch to Virgin soon I think as it's the only option in my area for 300mb or above.

Is it worth using an affiliate link to get discount? I found a site that reduces price to £37 a month instead of £62 for 500mb.

@Rainmaker and others that were giving me some tips.

I managed to get Virginmedia to analyse and they found a fault in some of the configuration of my hub4 somehow (not sure what it was they didn't tell me).

anyway following that, I'm now consistently getting over 940mbps on speed test and nperf etc... uploads 53mbps.

I took the opportunity to tidy up my server "rack" (i.e. some diy rough and ready shelving!) and gave me a chance to check all the cabling and make sure everything was in order. Even via wifi now I'm getting over 800mbps which is good enough for me.

So thanks to all of you that gave me some tips and tricks.

I beg someone to shed some light. The last maybe 2 months or so I’ve had serious drop outs and ping spikes 300ms for a few seconds and drops back to 30s. It’s also flashing errors when playing games for packet loss etc. I’ve changed the cable had an engineer out he’s changed my hub 3 to a hub 4 also.

It’s making gaming unplayable (ps5) , I’m led to believe there is only 3 of us in the green cabinet and there engineers say it all looks okay, where do I stand and what could it be or am I screwed?

The issue also is I do get the download speed so when I contact them they just think it’s all okay which it isn’t. I’m getting 350mb down and between 10-20 up

Lastly they’ve got me by the balls as I can’t get any other provider to my house or I’d leave.

So you have latency spikes, are you running BQM and if so does it show corresponding spikes? Is it only obvious on the PS5 and is it wired or wireless - I know you mention cable, but the last time I took that for granted the op lead us all on a wild goose chase for multiple posts till they clarified they were using power line

My router is 2 ft away from my ps5 and yes it’s hard wired it’s most definitely noticeable on the PS5 yes. I’ve also tried it using 5ghz wireless to see if maybe the Ethernet port or various other cables were defective and the same packet loss spikes are there. The virgin engineer last week even gave me a couple of brand new cables to use. I’ve not used BQM as I don’t have a computer to run it, I have however used an iOS app called ping plotter and it’s showing the spikes every other second this is wireless however but still way more than it should be.

I guess because I have the download speeds my general internet devices don’t have much of an issue but when gaming it’s virtually unusable for lag, ping spikes and packet loss messages.

I’ve just set up a BQM on my iPhone not sure if this will work in the background or not? But thought I’d try for the time being.

Had to go through VM support as it was over 2 weeks since I got an O2 sim and no sign of the Volt mobile data doubling or a VM BB upgrade. Got my SH4 delivered today, speedtests showing a nice 950/50 connection (500/35 previously). Not bad for £2 more than I was paying before (between BB and 3 x mobile sims).
