Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Did they not even attempt to drop you back down to m500, for now, to see if that resolved it? Would be very surprised if the Hub 3 is borked.

Had 3 different people try to sort it so far. Last one was going to call me back at 13:30.....still waiting. :(

"Borked" just a general term for not working in this case rather than "bricked" I guess.

Will try tomorrow.....

Thanks for the info. I should get getting my SH5 tomorrow. I take it here is nothing even loosely related to QoS in the settings then?

I can't remember as I only spent a few minutes looking around before setting it to modem mode. There's a load of stuff in there that simply doesn't exist in the previous SH3, such as access black/whitelists, DMZ, firewall on/off settings, port triggering/forwarding, etc. There's a lot more functionality left in there than I've seen in my previous Superhubs. It's not quite enough for an advanced user, but it's plenty for the average user.

Had a DM from a member of staff at Virgin and he’s ran some tests and said “there is an IT issue with how my broadband is provisioned” unsure as to what that means apart from its sounding like there throttling me or something, surely I can make a claim to this too?

My Superhub 5 arrived late last night, so I installed it today. Despite some multiple contradictory texts from VM's automated service to provision the hub onto the Docsis 3.1 network, it was pretty straight forward. From a quick look around the UI, it seems it's a more capable bit of kit than my SH3, with many more network options and some useful diagnostic stuff. Some of the obvious ones (such as selecting your own DNS servers) seem to be missing, as VM obviously don't want you changing those. The UI is the same sort of open, lightweight pastel style, and the firmware still labelled itself as a SH3 until the first firmware update.

It's a nice bit of kit, the UI is still a little clunky, and it still seems to be early in it's development eg. one of the reasons it's not being offered to 1 gig customers is the pods/boosters that you get for free on that tier don't yet work with the SH5, and neither do some of the VM apps. It's physically slimmer, but also taller, and is a perforated black box with a grey fabric front and a very subtle status light that shines from the corner and leaves a little spot of light on the surface in front of it.

It's a few years newer, gets away from the Puma chipsets, and better than previous hardware, though the firmware/software probably still needs a little refining. It's probably more than enough for the average user to use it as a router, though high end users will stick it in modem mode and connect a dedicated router to get more functionality, and take advantage of the 2.5 gb port on a 1 gb or higher tier by upgrading after you get hold of a SH5.

Can we see BQM graph for this.?

Well, I ordered a universal ac adapter from Amazon and it came today, was a punt because wasn't sure any of the 14 adapters would fit but one did. Now up and running with the Hub4, though its certainly nowhere near Gig download speeds at the moment. Getting near 50 up but only 400 down. Will let it settle and see how it goes.

We were paying £44 for 350/base v6 (now 360 software) and base phone. Just got offered and accepted a deal for an upgrade to 500mbit and an o2 sim (umlimited mins/messages/10GB data/5g) for an extra £8 a month.

What does the RealSpeed test show?

In the process of switching from Vodafone to Virgin M100 atm and got to say I'm not impressed in the slightest, for a communications company it couldn't get any worse. Black Friday deal @ £25 pm

So I'm now looking to tell the to FO and not bother starting the contract, install date put back, said I can only do a Saturday, they've now booked the 23rd, yet struggling to change it. At this rate they'll turn up and won't be able to get in. Utter joke.

Plan was to put their router into modem mode straight from day 1 and put Untangle / Sophos XG on the other side like I have with my current ISP.

Your cooling off period starts from the day they finally activate you, so just stick with your current provider and then cancel Virgin in the cooling off period - at least this way you get the cabling installed which is the bit they seem to struggle with.

Very true actually. If I do get a Saturday slot, I'm not bothered if it'll be Feb at this rate. Mrs is now working from home, I sadly can't, but there we are. Do I need an M100 connection over Vodafone, not really and considering VF have dropped my package cost to £20 p/m it's pretty good actually. That includes phone line rental, not that we use it for calls.

Hello All,

I'm getting virgin installed on Monday, 1 Gig (apparently!)...it's only just arrived at my location and is using the new "PIA"? (yes, I have no idea what that means!)

I think I'll be setting the virgin router to modem mode and using my existing routers (I'm in a three story house and have one one on each floor).

I'm currently with Sky, the sky router (modem) internal address is 192.168.0.1 and the routers are on 168.192.3.1

Is it just a straight swap once the virgin router is in modem mode, and is there anything I should ensure is working while the engineer is here? (extra to the internet / TV!)

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,

I got the 8gb Sim from Uswitch on the 25th Nov, still not received either double data or broadband speed increase. Spoke to VM yesterday and was told my broadband speed bump should happen when I get my SH5 tomorrow. So we shall see. Not spoke to O2 yet regarding the double data as tbh 15gb is more than enough for me but will happily take 30gb if I can get it ;)

No QoS on any VM router, you need to go modem mode and 3rd party for that. If you have a SH5 coming, presumably you have a SH3 or lower and they emailed you to explain why you wouldn’t be able to get Gig1 without an upgrade and that they would send you a SH5? Either way my speed upgrade went live as soon as my hub updated with the current firmware, O2 took me complaining before they doubled my data.
