Love a bit of WiFi 6e.

Looks like we can't escape just yet due to City Fibre not getting their act together, the frustration!

Wifi test through my Upstairs AP

The only thing I've noticed with my connection is sometimes during peak times upload drops to about 30-50 Mbps. It's not enough to affect anything and my cloud uploads run during silent hours so unless I'm running a Speedtest or I'm wanting to upload something it's not something I notice.

I've submitted a cancellation notice to Aquiss, to my surprise the VM connection has been rock solid. I didn't want to carry on paying Aquiss £50+ a month, or re-contract to another ISP for 18/24 months whilst the City Fibre roll out is paused. I'll just get Aquiss/another ISP to activate a port on my ONT if VM has a particularly bad time, or use my work SIM card which gets 5G.

Glad to see you now have the connection you should have, It's hard to say from my point of view about the Gigabit side and loss of performace based on the time of day etc although I have heard the Neighbours giving the same sort of feedback you have about the Top-Tier connections based on Coax installs. @kindai How are you getting on with your XGS-PON, any slow-downs in the evenings etc ?

Will push for a better deal this time around from VM, 30 quid ish I hope seeing as we have 4 phones on 02 as well. do we know if a 12 month contract is available or is it 18/24 month these days ?

Virgin package has bust through the £70 ish contract we were on to £95....

First offer they made over the phone was £75, disconnections team brought us down to £66 with faster broadband (350m now) a tv box upgrade and netflix added on (we're already on the top netflix package, so this is a bit of a waste). Only downside is we've dropped TNT sports, but I'm the only one who watches it so I'll take the hit for a more sensible monthly amount.

18 month package, apparently we can expect it to be £155 when the contract ends, at which point I hope there's another high-speed provider in our area as they have us over a barrel for internet speed!

That's because VM no longer bundle it as part of the package since the change to TNT, and now they just charge extra instead. So you haven't really dropped it, it's just sneaky by them.

So gone from VM's BQM to this, visually a pleasng thing to see

Browser page load response improvements are there too, pages just snap up now even though they were quick before, it's now just like clicking the back button on the browser, where a page loads instantly from cache, it feels like that for new pages lol.

Interesting, that's how Sky has done it for a while.....

Just go the confirmation email through, and we now have Sky Sports and Cinema, and wasn't expecting either! I expect the Christmas movies channel will get some abuse over the next few weeks

I really wish I could ditch VM having been with them since they were Telewest but there is no FTTP to my address. The Openreach site says they’re building in my area but ive no idea how long it’ll be before we get it and my VM contract is up for renewal in April.

Likewise, no other provider around here that can come close to the speeds.

Currently I stay with Virgin or I drop down to 30mb\50mb max connection which I really do not want to do

It used to come as part of the Sports package, now it’s extra but they’re still charging the same for sports.

Yeah I waited literally years for this day, Gosport has been dominated by VM since day 1 and no other provider has really put any investment into fibre networking. the stats speak for themselves:

More full fibre investment on the south coast as toob has announced that Gosport where it has been building its own FTTP network has started to see the first areas of the town go live.

The roll-out represents an investment of £18 million with the goal of reaching 45,000 premises. We know of 39,000 premises in Gosport so this looks to mean that the roll-out once finished will be almost all the premises in the area plus some in neighbouring council areas. As things stand today Gosport has very high Gigabit availability due to the presence of Virgin Media at 89% but for actual full fibre it is down at just 18.3% of premises covered with the majority of those via Openreach.

Imaging running a monopoly at over 80% of a town! No wonder they were always cagey about giving deals.

What's annoying for me is that much of my town (Maidstone, Kent) has FTTP, just not poor old me :(
