Virgin Media Discussion Thread

The only way to fix that is to start now - get yourself a new email address (preferably on your own domain so you have full control if you never want to change it again, this part is up to you) and every email that lands in your Blueyonder account, log in and change your email address. When you've gone a year without anything hitting the Blueyonder inbox (to allow for things that only happen once, like tax code notifications) that you care about then you are ready to let it go.

If you do this ASAP alongside negotiating a new deal with Virgin then you'll be ready to move by the time your contract is up.

I'm very happy still that I left (switched to Youfibre). I read in here every so often still to see if anything has changed but it never does. Price increases, cancellations, reductions and then starts over again :(
Same here.... the experience with VM was just horrendous towards the end of my tenure with them.

So I wonder if the spikes in my ping were potentially some sort of new customer monitoring? As they now seemed to have stopped.

Do you have any cloud backups sheduled? I'm no expert but that looks like something routinely uploading at regular intervals which has now stopped.

VM is currently deploying FTTP (XGS-PON) to our estate as we speak and have made great progress in the two weeks leading up to Christmas.

As and when I'm able to place an order it sounds like they'll provide a Hub5x (If I've read the above correctly).

I'm not sure this thread is best placed for my question but what's the best budget-friendly Mesh system to compliment the Hub5x? I intend to hard wire some devices but I will still need wifi across the rest of the property (three stories, 4 bedrooms circa 1400 sqft)

How can you check when it'll be live? I've always been able to get 1Gig at my postcode and I've noticed they've been about a fair bit installing new cabinets and cabling but the website doesn't seemingly say whether its FTTC or FTTP?

It won't ben either FTTC or FTTP (unless XGS-PON), it's will be via Virgins DOCSIS network, try this site https://bidb.uk/

<edit> I don't think there is any reliable way to see FTTP XGS-PON for Virgin

I believe both O2 and Virgin are using nexfibre for XGS-PON

there is a 'progress report' you can download on there.

Maybe I'm not using that site correctly but it just says that Virgin Media 1gbps is live (which I know) and tells me that Openreach FTTP is planned.

Nexfibre, the company that has been installing the cables and cabinets is working with VM according to ISPreview

The cabs probably arent locked atm, go open one up and see what mounting equipment is in there, will be pretty obvious if its XGS-PON as it will be geared for fibre routing.

The only problem I would have with leaving VM, is not having the Blueyonder email addy
Buy yourself a cheap .co.uk domain name and start swapping emails now. I used to have an old @ntlword.com address that’s how long I was with VM

Very annoying as well that once my contract ended and I was allowed to keep my domain for a while it got hacked and when I reported it they didn’t care or want to know

So Virgin has written price rises into their contracts but won't this action from Ofcom render them all void?

It's only a proposal at this stage and the proposal is a ban on mid-contract inflation-linked price rises. Ofcom specifically states that mid-contract price rises (in general) won't be banned but they propose they are spelled out more clearly.

But how will that apply to existing contracts? They will have to draw new ones.

I doubt Ofcom have any ability at all to impact contracts that have already been signed, so don't bank on anything changing if you agree to a service with annual RPI increases.

Will speak to virgin but, renewed contract 31/12/23 getting 500 instead of 1000mb, told it would be processed 3x in 72 hours and hasnt.

Made a complaint, nothing.

If I cancel, is this immediate or can I undo and renew after invoking cancellation.
Contract was meant to end 6/1/24 renewed 31/12/23 now 11ish days later and paying for a service I'm not receiving.

Issue is overall package is a decent deal so it's just a threat really.

Usually 30 days notice.

Going to have to do the renewal dance next month. Do wish that Openreach would roll out FTTP here. Just shows as in future plans on the checker map. Starting to wonder whether it’ll be Virgin upgrading to XGS-PON (by 2028?) or Openreach that will get here first. Or an alt-net. Airband aren’t that far from here with their rollout but no idea if they are actually coming here. Exascale are another local one but they seem to be concentrating on more rural areas. Although Virgin have generally been ok over the last 18 months. Especially compared to what they used to be like around here.
