Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Weird.

Last night my traceroutes to Youtube.com were ending at the cache servers within VM's network with pings of 8-9ms (lan.ntl.net iirc).

Today they're going all the way to Google's network (1e100.net) and getting pings of 14-15.

Maybe maintenance going on? or updating the cache? Personally never had a problem with the Google Cache servers hosted by VM (only problems with Youtube itself).

Hey guys,

My freind is with virgin and has been messed about by them a lot, he still has around 6-18 months on his contract but he wants to quit and join sky but dodge the cancellation fee.

Is there anyway he can do this ?

Have they broken the contract? If they've "messed about" and not supplied the service, you've got a good argument for claiming they've breached the agreed contract.

Gutted, not long fitted the N66 and range is not much better, though the web is a lot 'snapier' than the SH. Although gutted it has now confirmed that the deadspot is something environmental.

Yeah must be as I basically get at least twice the signal/speeds through the N66 compared to the SH2.

Darn it all. I can't work it out. SH2 is upstairs and I have a double extension behind it and for some reason it struggles to reach the extension. As the crow flies we are taking 4 metres but there are two external walls in the way. Sigh

Hmm, well put it this way, My SH2 is in a corner in the living room, behind the TV/AV Equipment, I see a decent amount of increase in signal/speeds. However If I move it away from all that my speeds shoot up.

So in your case its quite possible its the walls that are causing the issue.

Currently I'm using the SH2 downstairs in router mode, and upstairs where the signal is poor I've setup the N66 as an access point. Might be best for you to do the same mate.

And.. After calling to cancel on the 18th of Dec because of the price increase and being told that there was no price increase to my account as the price was based on my previous services I get an email today telling me that my bill this month is £28.25 instead of £26.. Jesus H Christ on a bloomin bike what the heck are they up to? Will be giving them a call tomorrow..

Well I have just called them and got ANOTHER £5 off for 6 months.. Sooo they tried to charge me £2.25 a month more but then gave me £2.50 off a month they would have been better off if I had not been charged the extra £2.25 in the first place..

it seems the new cable hasn't improved anything. i'm still getting between 20Mb to 55Mb. 55Mb was the highest I got for about 5 to 7 minutes

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3270666182

I really still think it's a network issue because I only get this issue at peak times when lots of people is online in the area.

weekdays mornings I get 126Mb perfectly.

I would understand if this issue was 24/7 then yes maybe it would be something to with in side my house or outside my house.

I know the network team are saying the utilisation isn't high. but maybe they are basing it on the whole 24 hours has a average? it could be high enough from 4pm to 12.30am for it to effect the speed, because has I said I only get this issue at peak times when lots of people is online in the area.

update

last Friday I was told by one of the vm forum team guys to do a lot of testing such has traces / pings / speed tests ect, over the last weekend, so I did that and I sent it all to him very early Monday morning, anyway before he even looked at it he said a ticket as been opened for high utilisation. it was one of worse weekends and the utilization went over the threshold.

so now they are admitting it's a high utilization issue again. I already told them many times it's a high utilization issue before but they think they know best. so I guess I will have to wait another 8 months till it's fixed..

for compensation they are only giving us £10 per month for 10 month... I was getting £25.38 per month before. silly really.

Since my recent my mining - the SH2 seems to be dropping the internet almost on a daily basis. Is there anything I can do to auto reboot upon the connection dropping?

Has anyone else noticed that the internet connection goes down for 21 minuets (exactly!)? Everyday my connection goes down at 20:45, and then it comes back at 21:06. It's been over a week now...
