Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I phoned them up today, got my bill down from £34.25 (Ex line rental, will pay that up front to save £65) to £28.25 for 12 months, I have 120mbit + XL talk unlimited with Caller display.

nice deal really.

Yeah wont forget that pay phone line up front for the year to save money...
gonna use the been with virgin for 10 years line and considering sky... so hopefully virgin customer loyalty springs in.

Yeah I couldn't get them to reduce it further, £6 p/m saving isn't too bad, don't really have a choice since BT fibre isn't available for me.

The plan is to downgrade once the 60mbit is doubled to 120.

heres a question. because vm is upping the speeds, 30 to 50, 60 to 100, 120 to 152, will this make the areas that have speed issues be worse? or is it just when they add people to the network it'll become worse?

i'm asking because when the network guy came round I asked this and he said upping the speeds won't make any different because they are only upgrading the 3 same tiers, not adding more tiers.

be i'm having a hard time believing that

I wouldn't ask the engineers anything at all. You more than likely know more about the VM network and what's happening than they do.

Stick to the info given by the techs on the VM forum instead.

I agree all VM engineers don't no much. but this was a network guy so I would have thought he'd know more

but on the other hand he did make up some things,

he is saying the cable outside my house underground is faulty and that's why i'm getting speed issues between 4pm to 1am. but the area manager told us before other people in the area are having the same problem.

so how on earth is it the cable..

anyway they are replacing it on 31st january

How hard is it to get the super hub replaced and do they give you the version 2 if you only have the 1st model? Been on the forums talking to the virgin staff and it's looking more and more likely that mine will probably need to be replaced. Just wondering if I have to jump through hoops to get them to send out a replacement to fix my issues (slow download speeds, slow copying speeds, websites grinding to a halt when I download and the internet not working in modem mode)

My Router packed up on Wednesday afternoon after 2-3 years of service a quick call and a technician was booked for Thursday afternoon, got a call Thursady morning saying they had a spare slot and were in the area so I was back up and running by 11am, very good service overall.

I did ask the technician for a SH2 but he said I would have to pay £50, so just had another SH1 installed. I think you may have to make some noise to get a free SH2...

Bah, oh well. As long as I get it fixed is the main thing

Its not a bad price drop tbh I had no idea about that line rental saver option so glad it was mentioned on here. I think ill consider plusnet fiber over sky fiber myself, although it is good to shop around a bit and like others do here haggle and get prices dropped in this recession.

Anybody else find that the wifi signal on the SuperHub is absolutely terrible... getting 0-1 bars/weak signal in the room that is directly below where the hub is

Yes, everyone knows it's terrible. It has silly little internal antenna that isn't even dual band. That's why people who need decent wireless put the SH into modem mode and use a proper router.

Your only option is to fiddle with the position and orientation of the Superhub, because it's quite sensitive to that, but it will never be good.

For the first time since I moved in to my flat I am reaching full speeds. Not sure why it wasn't doing full speed before tonight but it seems a reformat of my PC on Windows 7 has increased my speed from 40mb to 60mb

Wonder what the hell was causing that

Yeah I put it in modem mode and connected my old netgear wnr200 to it.

Thanks for this guys, I'll probably do that then if that's the case.

Any specific routers you'd recommend that don't break the bank?

Has anyone had a problem before where by when they download at full speed none of your websites will load or just take over 15 seconds to slowly process the page? Just been sent a new router but the problem still persists. I can't max out my 120mb connection anymore. I get around 9mb down but perfect upload speeds. Got an ongoing thread open on the virgin forums but they take couple of days to reply most times.
