Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I just asked for a sh2, I think people at the time were getting them for £20 self install but the wanted to charge me £50.

I just told them I wasn't paying £50 and as a long term subscriber I deserved better, after she spoke to her supervisor a sh2 was in the post for free :)

Just joined the dark side yesterday, having been on ADSL24 / comms.com LLU package for longer than I can remember. The service was ok for the most part, but I had some issues with my BT line (the drop line was the old figure of eight 2 core ~ 25 years old and had corroded through near the telegraph pole) that means no telephone or broadband for a week.
So I opted for a connection that didn't rely on the BT network.

So far? Was connected on saturday morning, the guys turned up at 07:45 and were done by around 9.
My connection has gone from 5mb down/0.5mb up to 53mb down/3mb up.

I'm on the 50mb fibre broadband only package. Seems I have the sh2. Can't say a great deal for the wireless - I connect my phone and it does it's thing fine, but my pc is ethernet connected.
So far so good.

Over the weekend I was not at home, but had complaints from my brother that the internet was acting strange. I got home this morning to find that the 3 lights on the router where green. After resetting a couple of times, it was still the same, the top 2 lights began blinking rapidly green, no blue light for connection.

I managed to get into my router and disabling the firewall, but still no connection. My brother said it was on and off yesterday afternoon, and when it was on, he had really slow speeds. Before getting on the phone to VM, any ideas what this could be?

My initial thought was that my area was getting upgraded?

So what are the chances of being given a SH2? I've been a VM subscriber since 2010 when we moved in, and had a SH1 for about 2yrs.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been experiencing slow speeds on the desktop in the study upstairs. Would a SH2 boost range/performance by any chance?

Not a chance in my case. Woman on the phone was convinced the SH1 was broken but would refuse to give any replacement because she didn't like that I had an 802.11n NIC.

She remoted into my laptop with Teamviewer (IIRC) I showed her speedtests from a laptop connected to my D-Link first then disabled it and tested the SH1 on both 5GHz and 2.4. Got 75Mb on the Dlink, half that on the SH1. When i showed her the properties showing B/G/N She concluded that my NIC isnt capable of high speeds on the Superhub because it's an 802.11n client.

The idiot couldn't even get her head around remote desktop. I RDPd onto my wired PC from the laptop to show her that I get full speed on the LAN and she just couldn't understand how I did it even though she used Teamviewer to get onto my laptop lol. Had to explain how her own software worked and she was still clueless, kept saying "Yeah but we have these systems in place" and "I don't think you're authorised to do that". More like **** off you *****.

Spent about 2 hours trying to figure out what the ****'s problem was and try to convince her. Amazing thing is I managed to remain calm from start to finish.

Hi Asim, I had someone remote on my laptop and he just did what I did, set to channel 11 and 144Mbps.

Would the Asus EA-N66 or USB-N66 benefit me?

Getting a better deal

Our 18 month contract is up and was wondering what would be the best way to get a discount.

Currently pay around £64.50 a month for XXL (150mb/s) and phone + line rental

Should I just phone up and ask to leave, saying I'm switching providers?

Last time I tried this they didn't play ball right away, so I signed up to Sky in-between cancel date, then got a call a few days prior to cancellation offering a better deal!!

Already had signed up to Sky so couldn't accept there new offer.

£45 a month is a bargain for what you are getting I tried for an hour speaking to retentions team and it appears no more loyality discounts or very low ones at most they are just giving the newer special offers and deals for new customers to existing customers but at the price after half price which is still £60-70 quid.

Course you can try, perhaps the 2 people at retentions team just did not want to give me any thing despite saying am leaving for sky due to 50 percent discount or cancelling my service etc!

Another idea someone said but no idea if it worked some suggested it would not earlier.... was disconnect then call up few weeks later and get the new customer deals ie half price for 6 months one poster on hotukdeals said they changed the contract to the wifes name and got the 6 months half price offer.

Think its luck of draw perhaps, would be over moon @ 45 !

oops sorry its £64.50, £45 was for the first 6 months I think.

I managed to get 152Mbps Internet, L TV with TiVo Box and XL Phone for £31.50/month when paying for line rental upfront (£120 at the time).

So works out at £41.50/month if you pay the line rental upfront or £46.50 if you don't.

It's been mentioned loads of times - if retention can't/won't give you a better deal, just cancel your sub and take out a new one in the name of whoever you live with in the property via Quidco or similar to get cashback plus the latest package offer.

Ehh... I'm slowly getting tired of virign every month something happens, this month

That's some crazy ping man, make sure your area isn't under maintenance, I suffered bad ping and constant connection drops the weekend, found out they was doing maintenance. I wish VM would let there customers know when they are undergoing such things.
