Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Looking to sign up with VM and am just really after the 50mb fibre broadband. I hardly watch any TV or have any need for a phoneline.

Current price on the website is £26.50 a month + £50 one off fee.... Is that the best deal I am likely to get or is there any way to make it cheaper?

As a new customer are there any tips or tricks with the packages?

For example - can I get the 100mb internet but then upgrade it to 152mb for free like other existing customer seem to have - apparently you need to sign a new 12 month contract but if I have a 12 month contract already apparently I can sign again and get it upgraded. The contracts would run concurrently. Is this true?

Also, anyone used sites like topcashback in conjunction with getting a new package?

That's some crazy ping man, make sure your area isn't under maintenance, I suffered bad ping and constant connection drops the weekend, found out they was doing maintenance. I wish VM would let there customers know when they are undergoing such things.

This happens all the time, last time it was the fault of cables and the signal strength got worse so he installed signal strengthen things. But this pings and connection loss happens all the time, I don't want quit and go onto another contract as I'm moving out soon... But this is terriable, I'm not coming back to virgin at the new place. I might go for Plusnet, people seem to be happy with it or even better try to get 100mb hyperoptic package if I can. :D

I use this, but its never accurate or up to date. When I checked the weekend the service was good. Couple people around my area had the same problem as me.
This is no use anyway, no Virgin vans around and as I said before this happens all the time to my connection. This week isn't that bad as I can still browse the internet (but it feels like having 500kb/s instead of 60mb...)

It's been mentioned loads of times - if retention can't/won't give you a better deal, just cancel your sub and take out a new one in the name of whoever you live with in the property via Quidco or similar to get cashback plus the latest package offer.

Thanks for that info will pass that onto a few mates next time there subs up!

oops sorry its £64.50, £45 was for the first 6 months I think.

Ahh yeah as was saying it always seems to hit 60-70 quid but I would advise you follow what covenantuk suggested to get a better deal. If I had known that info I would have been laughing I have not read or seen that info on this entire thread so must have missed it + was told clearly it would not work 2 months ago on here when i asked if I could try the disconnect and reconnect trick !

The new Big Kahuna package is £60.99 per month, and that includes 152Mb broadband and phone and TV.

Yup 60 quid its a good deal but obviously much better when @ half price for 6 months for new customers only !

I managed to get 152Mbps Internet, L TV with TiVo Box and XL Phone for £31.50/month when paying for line rental upfront (£120 at the time).

So works out at £41.50/month if you pay the line rental upfront or £46.50 if you don't.

Awesome, do you mind sharing the info on how you did this though? For new customers it appears much easier but existing not so but 41 quid is a real bargain for such good services.

Ehh... I'm slowly getting tired of virign every month something happens, this month

If I trace route to you (well, your local VM hub) it works fine. Try again and see if its still bad?

On a 60MB line currently and on my account page it says -

"You can supercharge your speed from your current 60Mb broadband to 100Mb between October 2014 and December 2014. We'll contact you when it's ready."

Does that mean it will be sped up for those 2 months and then return to what it was before or is it a permanent speed boost ?

Upgraded to 100meg sometime between october and december.

In my experience the date range is wildly inaccurate and they dont always contact you. So worth keeping checking if you can upgrade or not.

Well according to a VM guy I talked to who was very sparse on info he said my area is getting upgraded, So here's hoping :)

Ring em up and ask, and the speedboost is not temporary.

They gave me an estimated Supercharged date as July and I rung them up back in April and they did it instantly.

The time window I think is when "full" coverage will be available in your area, you might be able to get it sooner if you ask.

I fixed it, someone through wifi was either downloading something or on purpose making my life harder... :o

My speed boost was slated for sometime next year. I called up as a new enquiring customer to ask what the fastest available speed was at my property and they told me 152Mb so when I later renegotiated my 12month contract I asked them to do the speed upgrade at the same time. It was put in effect 15 mins later.

How did you get this package? seems a great deal - did you call and negotiate?

would like this answered also I think it will help future dealings with virgin but its clear some guys are just using the disconnect and resign up via quidco virgin offer packages under a different family members name.

I used to have 50Mb but downgraded to 30Mb to save £15 a month and havn't really noticed much of a difference really, I can still download everything I want to watch in a matter of minutes. I suppose if other people were using the same connection it would be different though....maybe

I just called up and complained about the price increase, they then moved me on to a different package and gave me a loyalty discount on top. Plus I then paid the line rental 12 months in advance which works out as saving £5/month

Phoned up yesterday about the latency in my area, and ended up changing over from my current (120meg broadband, L TV and M phone line) to (152meg, XL TV, M phone line, 500GB Tivo box and Superhub 2). At first I was offered the £49.99 for the engineer to replace the superhub or £20 for it to be sent out in the post, I agreed on the £20 option, then later said it was not possible, so now I have to pay £49.99 for the engineers time to fit a router which will take 2mins.

I was currently paying £67.99 a month for my current plan, and with the BIG Kahuna I will be paying £55.99 for 6 monthes then £60.99 after that. Not too bad, but still abit meh about the extra £49.99 for the installation of the Tivo box and Superhub 2.
