Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I always have decent speeds but find the router is unstable (as often discussed on these forums).

I've never had a problem with Netflix, and since the update I like that I can now select profiles in the Tivo Netflix app.

I decided to phone up and they said that maintenance is being performed in my area and will take up to 28th January for it to be completed. I have a feeling this stuff is BS, just an excuse I hear it too many times.

So I then asked if he could put me on a different network if where I am is oversubscribed and he said that certain changes will be made and will take him 30 minutes to make these changes and it should improve my speeds. I seriously have no idea what he'll do on his side.

Then I asked that because of this I want some credit on my account as I didn't pay for 5mbps speeds when I joined, I might as well have stuck with BT ha ha, and he said an email will be sent from his side and they will credit me accordingly.

They make up dates as to when problems will be fixed. I've had issues almost from day one and the date for upgrading the area have moved a couple of times. The last change of date was end of September 2014 is now March 2015.

But with the price increase it seems I can now cancel without penalty. So I'll be on the phone tonight to give 30 days notice.

As I've said to them many times, I left VM in March 2012 after months and months of problems and promises of fixes and network upgrades, yet here I am nearly 2 years on and nothing has changed.

I can say that I'll never go back to VM ever again. Twice bitten now.

There's throttling and then there's VM.

I should get 150MB, I never break 100, the fastest I ever get is 85. Most of the time, when I actually want to use it (in the evening, since I'm at work all day) I'm lucky if I get 20-30, most of the time it's 10MB or less.

They claim this is a usable service, I disagree.

I've been on Cable since the NTL days & I have to say I've had more outages in the last few weeks than in all my years before put together. 4 in all & one time for longer than 24 hours, I rang them & got compensated for the day I lost & got the usual speel about them upgrading.
It's all **** **** as there is never an improvement in my service it's been the same since I got it.
I have no complaints about my speeds as there always bang on but the outages are getting more & more frequent which is boiling my ****.

There saying it's because the cable is 10+ years old it can't handle modern day speeds but as I said earlier my speeds have Always been the same so there talking out there *****.

Was going to drop Sky and go with one of the Virgin packages, been with Sky 13 years and pay £66 for Fibre (40/10) multiscreen and landline

Whats the Virgin box like?

Rubbish.

The only good thing is you can record 2 channels and watch a different 3rd.

I came from a Sky HD+ box and expected VM's TiVo box to give it a run for its money. But I hate it, even after 12 months I still get frustrated by how poor the UI is and how slow it is compared to Sky.

Can't wait to go back to Sky.

Even if my internet with VM was faultless I still wouldn't keep VM for TV.

I haven't used a SkyHD box, just ages ago used a Sky+ box (the white ones). I've also used a Toppy TF500, Humax Foxsat HDR, and the Tivo box is slower than both of those on UI refresh/movement through pages. In operation I don't see a problem, i.e. recording is fine, changing channels is fine etc.

The biggest thing I hate about the Tivo is when browsing the guide it always jumps to channel 101 regardless of which channel you are currently viewing, i.e. channel surfing is slow.

The Tivo is brilliant when compared to the normal Virgin box you get for a multiroom if you dont pay for the extra Tivo box. It has almost no hard drive space, a very crap interface and is slow and awkward to use.

Because it's not a really a "new" UI. It's exactly the same UI just re-written in a newer language with different colours. It's still riddled with the same non-responsiveness.
Was flash, now html5. So not the same then.

Example, I just pressed home and it took 2.7 for the menu to fully open. Then I scroll down and press "My Shows" which took 4.5 seconds to open.
less than 1 and less than 2 for me.

Furthermore, when you scroll down the Home menu, there is a noticeable delay for the sub menu items to render, even when you go to a menu item which was previously rendered. Typically UI designers use caching to ensure smooth UI traversal, however it seems the no-frills VM UI recalls/redraws UI elements for every interaction.

less than a second for me, then instantly as everything but on demand and catchup IS cached until you return to TV.

Furthermore, when you scroll between "Catch Up" and "On demand" in the home menu, the submenu flashes once before being displayed. This just shows that it's a no-frills and poorly tested UI cobbled together by an underpaid and/or inexperienced designer.

Seriously? you're complaining about tthe submenus flashing once when they are displayed? Have you not read this back and thought "oh wow yep, there's anal and then there's me" ?

I'll say it again, the release was about getting html5 out there. It was not about redesigning the UI. for the rest of us it IS a lot quicker. Don't know why it isn't for you. and before you go blaming VM, remember its TIVO who write the software and its TIVOs own UI that the VM tivo UI is (heavily) based on. But yep sure, amateurs/underpaid/students etc.

Look familiar?

That's not really the comparison he's looking for.

The TiVo box is slower than Sky's HD box.

In fact the only box that the TiVo box is faster than is the the multi room box or anything else VM has supplied in the past.

Just arrived home and got the letter saying from 1st Feb they are increasing my contract by £3 a month, annoying thing is I only joined 2 weeks ago and not even had my first bill.

I phoned and confirmed yday, as I got a pretty decent deal from them. My installation was done on Monday and I haven't received any letter yet, don't expect to also.

Thanks guys

Looks like haggling for a lower Sky package is the way to go in that case

Appreciate the honest comments, seen some ppl complain about youtube always buffering on Virgin

I was with them many years ago and their broadband was great when the 20meg product first came out.. Although it wasn't faultless

Thanks guys
