Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well, I came from Sky to Tivo, and yes it is very different and much more complicated. But I think that is becuase of all the extra functionality it has. I found it difficult at first, but once I'd taken the time to go through the tutorials, it is easy enough and I'm very happy with it. The Sky box is dead easy to use, but it doesn't do very much.

What does the tivo do over the latest sky+ hd? Interested to know. Also interested in vm support things like whole series of boxsets on demand.

Virgin Media price increase

We moved recently and had Virgin installed on 18th November, so a month today. I've just opened a letter received today to say my package is going up £3 a month from February.

Thing is I only have internet and am paying £15.50 a month (£4.00 for the first 6 months) so £3 is actually quite a big increase. I know providers like mobile operators can increase prices as and when but I could have sworn there was a percentage cap? 19% seems like they're taking the **** a bit, especially as it's only 32 days after I signed up to an 18 month contract. It's also 75% of an increase on 3 out of the 6 promo months.

Is this right/allowed?

I had the same letter yesterday - had Virgin installed on the 29th November, phoned them up today and they said this did not apply to me as I was a new customer, this letter was sent to everybody.

edited - now merged.

That sounds like a joke!

I know they're increasing prices by £3 but I'm paying around £60 per month.

It sounds criminal to increase a £15.50 contract by the same amount! I feel for you and I hope they sort it out.

I'm sure they will have something in the small print that allows it, they don't normally miss a beat.

Best thing you can do is ring them and plead your case, I had a similar situation with a Sky increase before i'd even had my first monthly payment and they gave me a discount for 12 months to offset it. Perhaps Virgin will do the same?

Does seem incredibly unfair.

Yeah I rang Virgin saying I was leaving due to the price increase. 20mins later I now pay less than before :).

Were you out of contract? Not going to be an option for the OP as he will be in contract .... they basically have him by the nuts.

It's just down to whether they will do something as a goodwill gesture, or as RJC says it won't apply as a new customer.

I paid £144 one off for my Line Rental saver. Monthly I pay out £23 for 100 Mbps Broadband, Unlimited Calls, Caller Display and Answer Phone.

Today I rang them up as I had VM installed on Monday, and asked that I'm not going to put up with this and I have a right to cancel within this month, to stay, I want some credit back as I'm not happy with the service. They agreed £10 every month, until the congestion issue is fixed, I pushed for more but £10 a month is as far as they'd go, so I accepted it, they say it will be fixed 28th January. My monthly bill now comes to £13, which isn't bad, will just have to bite my tongue and use it.

I took her full name as well just to make sure she wasn't messing about here lol!

I had a similar deal in the past for reduced service. £10 off for 12 months. I've also had at least 2 free months too so around £200 in credits so far. This isn't including anything I'll hopefully get for my current 12 months of reduced service I've had since last year

I had a tech visit again today from the lead engineer for this area as my fault was raised up for going on for so long. He did some things but the most interesting point was he called and confirmed the re-seg work for my area had been done. I'm still getting only ~50Mbit during peak times so after a year of build up they best they can offer is 1/3rd performance. If this gets re-raised I'm gonna be waiting another 6-9 months at least :(

Is this right/allowed?
Yes it is allowed, but they have to offer you some thing equal, in return.
In the small print they have offered you the chance to cancel the contract early, and without penalty.
You are limited for time before they assume you accept the increase and new contract though.

Big deal I'm paying £25 a month for 2 meg adsl and a phone I don't use.

Had the same, call them last week as my loyalty discount was finishing next month. They reduced my bill and I didn't need to cancel anything. Also said the increase wont apply to me now come Feb :)

I am certain you can contest this. Your contract may have a provision in for a price increase limited to inflation, which this clearly exceeds. If your contract just has a provision for any price increase without limit and without the option to cancel the contract, I suspect that would fall foul of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977.

Ofcom have ruled that you are allowed to switch your entire package (broadband, TV and landline) to a better deal, penalty free. Even if you're still in contract with your current provider*.
