Virgin Media Discussion Thread

But the broadband isn't awesome. Far from it.

You can't say that as it massively depends on location and number of customers hanging off the local UBR.

Luckily, i'm near enough in the middle of no where so 99% (unless they're doing maintenance) of the time i get the quoted speed.

Just had an email about 60mb to 100mb speed increase and i have had to sign in on the website and "order" it , Should be free ?

Was weird cause i didn't have to do a thing the other times i have been upgraded.

advise to avoid virgin if you have other options. it would appear to me they are not really doing anything to increase their infrastructure anymore.

my line since installation which is now 4 days ago has stayed at 3mbs download. pretty lame really. websites are taking time to load especially the ones that is rich in content or are not registered in the UK domain.

Just arrived home and got the letter saying from 1st Feb they are increasing my contract by £3 a month, annoying thing is I only joined 2 weeks ago and not even had my first bill.

Your lucky, I just had a letter from Virgin saying the increase is £4.50.

I phoned and confirmed yday, as I got a pretty decent deal from them. My installation was done on Monday and I haven't received any letter yet, don't expect to also.

Hopefully you wont :), will give them a call tomorrow.

How long have you been with them? I only have broadband & phone.

I happen to be on 152Mbit in my area (which is actually an average of 20Mbit most the time..) but I decided to check on when my area was officially due to be 'upgraded' to the new tiers. When the upgrades were first announced my area was due July-October 2014.

When I reported my poor speeds in Dec 2013, which got raised in March 2014, this pushed the area upgrade date back to Dec 2014, so already a delay for reseg work. I checked it now as the speeds are still not improved from a year ago and now the upgrade date still says December...but it says December 2015

Amazing. This also must mean that no further upgrades are coming before at least 2016 as they don't think they'll have even finished the last lot of before the end of next year! Unbelievable it can take them so long.

Anyone else have issues with iPlayer on Virgin Media? I'm on 100Mb package, I don't get those speeds during the evening, 5-10mbps to be precise. I'm just watching The Apprentice on rewind, and it's constantly loading/freezing, I'm 3 days in to my service.

I really hope there is a fix for this, if I leave now as I've got 1 month to cancel, can the line rental saver be refunded too? I paid out £144 for that, I sure hope so.

No idea how I'm gonna watch MOTD like this lol

If your speeds are that slow then your area needs a reseg. If it's not already been raised then you're looking at a year for better speeds potentially (and it can be longer). My advice is if you have other reasonable connection options then leave.

That's an insanely long time. I'll speak to them again tomorrow.

I spoke to someone today and I sort of had confidence in what he said, he mentioned that there could be a lot of congestion in my area but what he'd do is perform some tweaks for me which should improve things, I genuinely thought there was a way he'd be able to move me from say one busy cabinet/hub to another which was less busy lol, something like that.

When I have a word with them I seriously need to sort this out, don't want to be wasting my money here.

I might consider downgrading to 50 Mbps, because frankly if I get 5 Mbps speeds during the evening/after work, what's the point of 100 Mbps?

If at the moment I've got 100 Mbps and I get 5 Mbps during the evening, with 50 Mbps will I get 2.5 Mbps or intact with 5 Mbps?

Was flash, now html5. So not the same then.

less than 1 and less than 2 for me.

less than a second for me, then instantly as everything but on demand and catchup IS cached until you return to TV.

Seriously? you're complaining about tthe submenus flashing once when they are displayed? Have you not read this back and thought "oh wow yep, there's anal and then there's me" ?

I'll say it again, the release was about getting html5 out there. It was not about redesigning the UI. for the rest of us it IS a lot quicker. Don't know why it isn't for you. and before you go blaming VM, remember its TIVO who write the software and its TIVOs own UI that the VM tivo UI is (heavily) based on. But yep sure, amateurs/underpaid/students etc.

Look familiar?

I don't know why you're getting so defensive about my criticism and why you're replying just to me? There's about three others on this page alone saying the UI is "****", "amazingly slow", "rubbish", .

before you go blaming VM
:D I couldn't care less who's to blame. VM, Tivo or some contracted designer no one has ever heard about. Slow UI is "quicker" but still slow.

Were you part of the team? It's almost 2015 mate, glitching UIs are should be a thing of the past unless you really have no idea what you're doing and/or underpaid and/or rushing.

At the end of the day if I were designing a UI and such a top level menu was glitching like that, I would expect myself to not get paid.

Also, quicker does not mean quick.

I'm not defensive, i'm just saying your experience is not the same as mine. you can take from this that something isnt quiet right. And its not just me, far more people are saying that it#s quicker, that it is quick, than those saying it isn't.

No, i'm not just replying to you. When i said i dont get the criticisms of the new UI, i wasn't addressing you specifically, was I? I'm replying to you now because you are addressing me, just as previous posts. I only replied to you initially because of your 3 main criticisms - slow ui / iPlayer / netflix -, only the ui is anything to do with virgin and most of us have no problem with it. iplayer and netflix are not VMs fault as you were suggesting. Valid criticism, yes - they are crap - but I know the BBC and netflix need to pull their fingers out and i know i cant blame VM for this. I just i pointed this out to you.

Well, no you wouldnt care. not after i told you it wasnt VM who wrote the software, of course.

Good job you arent designing UIs then, i guess, if something so small as some text refreshing once causes you to moan like this.

Also, quicker does not mean quick.
No. Quick means quick. And mine is quick, even though my son has managed to fill up my box with 200 episodes of fireman sam. Actually that's one of my criticisms - old episodes being taged as new and the box then recording everything in sight. Anyway, my box is still quick and yours isnt; again, something isnt right if your box isnt as fast as mine given mine is choc-full of recordings.

And mine is quick

Well we just have different standards/expectations which is fair enough. I don't have high expectations when it comes to some things too. :)

I design and develop websites which require user interaction, and personally I simply would not allow such amateur niggles (like non-fluidic redrawing/re-rendering) through.

Modern UI design is all about fluidity, because modern day ICs are able to handle much more demanding processing these days.

Thanks guys

Looks like haggling for a lower Sky package is the way to go in that case

Appreciate the honest comments, seen some ppl complain about youtube always buffering on Virgin

I was with them many years ago and their broadband was great when the 20meg product first came out.. Although it wasn't faultless

Thanks guys

Mart

Yep, if TV is important to you I'd recommend stick with sky. I hated the tivo box and ui although can't comment on the new ui they use. I found their customer service to be terrible and the sky guys to be very helpful. This of course does not mean their cs is worse or less, just my own personal experiences of them.

The internet speeds would be the only thing to pick over sky, but I have had a flawless connection with sky for nearly a year now and 40mb has been ample. Speed testing in the evening I have only seen as slow as 25mbps. The vm router looked promising because it has the two separate bandwidths. However, all my devices kept disconnecting from the box.

The internet service will always be circumstantial though. Right up from geographic location in the UK, down Street location from the switch.

Speaking of which, your website is down mate :p
(Just coincidence I recently noticed your sig was clickable) :)

Yeah it's been down for almost a year.

My main site used to be hosted on TSOhost but after they tried some funny business and tried extorting me out of £50 for something that costs about £4.50, so decided not to pay. Ended up losing my site as I used to make most of my changes directly to the server and didn't have an up-to-date local backup. :(

Now I have accounts with Simplexwebs and OVH.

I paid £144 one off for my Line Rental saver. Monthly I pay out £23 for 100 Mbps Broadband, Unlimited Calls, Caller Display and Answer Phone.

Today I rang them up as I had VM installed on Monday, and asked that I'm not going to put up with this and I have a right to cancel within this month, to stay, I want some credit back as I'm not happy with the service. They agreed £10 every month, until the congestion issue is fixed, I pushed for more but £10 a month is as far as they'd go, so I accepted it, they say it will be fixed 28th January. My monthly bill now comes to £13, which isn't bad, will just have to bite my tongue and use it.

I took her full name as well just to make sure she wasn't messing about here lol!

Well, I came from Sky to Tivo, and yes it is very different and much more complicated. But I think that is becuase of all the extra functionality it has. I found it difficult at first, but once I'd taken the time to go through the tutorials, it is easy enough and I'm very happy with it. The Sky box is dead easy to use, but it doesn't do very much.
