Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm on the 152MB service, my biggest gripe is the upload. At the moment I send over lots of media to my parents manually over FTP but ideally they would just stream off my Plex server but my 12MB upload won't allow this. If they increase it to 15MB that is a joke.

12mbps is more than enough to stream remotely using Plex, as I do this fairly regularly to my laptop or iPad when out of the house.

Agreed, no issues whatsoever streaming Plex remotely on my 152 VM connection.

If you have issues check what the remote device is trying to play quality-wise and drop it down accordingly, but any of the 1280x720 settings should be more than adequate and stable with your upload speed. Otherwise check if something else is saturating your upload at the same time.

Personally I use "1280x720 4 Mbps" on my iPhone and it's flawless.

My parents live about 1/2 mile away and have VM 100MB. I went round last night, installed the Plex App on their Amazon Fire TV, the quality was set to 720p 4Mb. I could only view the first minute of the movie as I don't have a Plex pass but it seemed to work flawlessly. I'm not sure how this is possible though as surely my upload connection cannot support a 4Mbps steam as if I upload to FTP I get about 1.5MB/sec.

Megabit vs megabyte. To Wikipedia!!

Why do you need the plex pass. I don't have one and can watch stuff remotely.

Also 1.5MB/s = 12Mbps :)

ahhh, rookie mistake! ;) They are watching it on a 42" 720p plasma so I would like to send it over with the highest possible quality but avoid buffering. Is the current setting a good one to use?

You need a plex pass to watch it on the Fire TV App, no idea why. Either that or you pay a one time fee.

Is virgin doing any free speed updates this year?

Edit - nvm seems they maybe one after reading up the page a bit. So 100 to 200 it might swap to then, cool. Hopefully my 6mb up gets bumped too.

Does anyone have a contact at Virgin Media?

My area and the area around it have had full fibre optic cable, plus ducting for the coaxial (to every single door) for more than 10 years ... according to local VM engineers, it's never been used once, since in Telewest days local engineers didn't want to work on the period properties in the area (more fiddly) and flagged the area as not being covered, internally. This persisted after VM bought them.

I only just realised the situation. However trying to get VM to send out an engineer and rectify the situation is practically impossible. I've spent hours on the phone, and they've promised numerous times that an engineer will call and arrange a time, but of course it hasn't happened. Even though the only other option in the area is ~10-12Mbps ADSL, the famously bad VM customer service is pretty off-putting ... especially as they refuse to rectify a situation that is costing them potentially 100s of customers.

Even if the CS guys are actually logging the engineer time. I suspect some local engineers are still conspiring to avoid ever going to the locations where these 'phantom' VM service areas exist.

Anyone know anyone senior at VM, or someone in management?

Anyone else got slow upload today or lately. Just running some speedtests on a few servers, seems to be hitting 2mb upload when it is usually 6mb. I rebooted the router, download seems fine at 90-100mb just upload seems to be iffy and im having issue streaming stuff tho i dunno why as i didnt think upload was needed much but i defo having issues streaming 1080p films tonight on xbmc.

Been having daily problems all this week, net goes down or grinds to a snails pace atleast 3 times a day for around 20-30minutes. Got today off so I'm going to phone and give them some abuse.

Rebooted router a few times, rang VM and they said to restore router to default, and there waa no network issue, but still the same
But noticed another issue, i cannot seem to search google on any device in the house
So changed dns in phone and it now searches google..

I've been offered kahuna bundke for £25 plus line rental, think that's a good deal? I've got FTTC option at new property, I've worked out plus net fttc up to 80mbs (57 plus estimated). £22 a month including line rental with cashback? Any advice what to do?

How long for? Line rental is £17 a month with virgin, you'll also get 152Mb download or as close to it as possible.

just phoned them up and picked up sky sports and moviews for an extra £15 a month I've been meaning to ring up and ask about my pricing for a while. I know they upsold me but I've found myself actually watching the tv a bit more recently. I like the fact the log in works on the sky sports app too.

For 12 months, I would do line rental saver so just under £40 a month for a year?
