Virgin Media Discussion Thread

My friend is having issues with a virgin superhub

By a wired connection he'll usually get 100MBPS but by wifi it'll be much slower around 4MBPS and this is with full wifi signal - Connecting to the wifi by either a laptop or computer which is using a wifi card causes the connection to drop quite often - I looked in the router settings but couldn't really see any issues - Any idea what could be causing this

Superhubs seem to have quite poor signal strength and are very sensitive to orientation and obstruction. Giving it that upright shape without external antennas will always compromise wi-fi signals. You can try fiddling with moving it about, but you could switch it to modem mode, put on a proper router, and suddenly have a much better wi-fi signal.

You could try logging it as a fault with VM, but they will basically claim it's down to the vagaries of wi-fi and it's down to your wireless cards/house/equipment, etc. Anything but the superhub being as cheap as it can be.

Im wanting to get BT sport also which will cost extra from sky, is it included in the sports or big kahuna deal?

They also want an installation charge, if i call up is there any extras i can haggle out of them since i'm currently with sky?

Yes BT Sports is included in the Big Kahuna. Are you sure they want an install charge? I've never had one no matter how many services i've added or removed over the years.

As you already have broadband make sure you call up retentions to get whatever deal you can. They're 'usually' good at getting you the most they can for your money.

Just had a deal through from virgin.

I currently have 152mb broadband with them only at £43 per month and i did have full sky package at £33 per month (discount for wanting to cancel). The sky deal has now ended and im back up to £75 per month for sky.

Total bill £118 per month!

Had a letter from Virgin which i seem to get every month offering Big Kahuna deal. if i add in sports and movies to the offer its : £75 for 12 then £105 for 5 months!

last year when i got the deal from sky i spent ages on the phone to both companies haggling to get a good deal, i might just make the full switch now to virgin.

Keep haggleing when you actually start the switch expect both companies to continually one up each other the longer you play the "game"

ive just cancelled sky, they offered 50% off for 10 months, my total bill will still cost more than the virgin bundle which is 12 months.

when taking a package like the big kahuna, what can you get knocked off since i will be switching? line rental?

Has anyone ever made a formal complaint to Virgin?

I used to be on the full XL package paying about £120 a month and when the contract ended 6 months ago i negotiated a new package costing £60 month. Since then I've had to phone them on about 4 occasions because of extraordinary phone charges and package cost that increased all by itself to about £80. I've ended paying about £110 a month for about half the services I was on with my previous contract.

I phoned them tonight at the end of my tether and I've been assured that i'll now be paying the £60 a month I agreed to originally but I still want to make a formal complaint and/or write to Which? or Ofcom or something because I was deliberately misled by their sales people and was being overcharged for no reason. The person I spoke to on the phone tonight even said they had no idea why I was being charged so much.

I'm certain they must have broken the terms of the contract and I have every intention of making them pay for it.

CISAS

This should tell you the procedure. Basically you have to write a complaint to VM, give them a chance to reply, and if they still don't get things sorted, you can go to CISAS which IICRC instantly costs VM £400 to process the complaint, so they tend to try not to let that happen.

You could also try contacting the office of VM's MD, which many people have found works as they have a team to deal with complaints that go that far.

Ive just sopken to virgin about possibly switching.

They offered me big kahuna + Sky sports/movies + HD + tivo 500 box for £79 per month for 12 momths, 12 month contract with no install fee.

After 12 months it goes rolling at £105 at which time i would switch back to sky if they dont offer me a discount.

Is this a good deal?

Ewww this Wifi thing is gross. Plus in usual Virgin Media style their website is busted for me so I can't sign in to opt out :p

I had the same. Why on earth would I want the unwashed masses generating latency on my egress queues, when I have 4g when I'm out and about.

Finally managed to opt out.

I have just signed up for the Virgin Media 50Mb Broadband & Phone
It is fiber optic and until now I have been using I think 17mb adsl.
Is the the super-hub virgin provide okay or would I need to buy something else?
Is there anything else I should know of? The engineer will come on 14th September.
Thanks.

The super hub I have found is very good. Just upgraded my VM cable from 50Mb to 100Mb. After line testing over the last 2 weeeks the line has settled and gives a consistant 126Mb download. Very pleased with VM after getting rid of BT Infinity 2 rubbish.

Virgin have put the prices of broadband on it's own up again. 50mb is now £30.25... or £34.49 with a phone line. Just in time for the 'free' upgrades
