Ooh, shiny!

Thank you for your application to take part in our broadband hardware trial.
Sorry for the delay in getting in touch - we’ve been amazed by the number of applicants this year.

We’re delighted to be able to tell you that you’ve been selected to take part.

Wonder if it'll be a nice new SuperDuper hub!

152Mb is way faster than I actually need already. I hope they increase the upload.

I work from home and often download large log files with the kids watching Apple TV at the same time. Uploading logs is where the real pain is, plus uploading photos to Dropbox etc.

Virgin have always been good in my area for the two years I've been with them, I suppose it depends on how dense your housing estate is as to how congested your local box will be.

I'm hoping that there is some 300/30 offering so that backing up my PC to the cloud becomes a practical reality.

No one knows, thought it's suspected to be Superhub 3. Most of these types of trials have been about new Superhubs and higher speeds.

Indeed. It's a 'broadband hardware trial' so a new SH is about all it can be. It'd be a bonus if it came with 300Mbps or 500Mbps on top. Another successful candidate here btw.

Hopefully moving into an pretty modern, fairly upmarket apartment block at the start of next month and virgin would be my first choice, from looking at street view the place was built in 2008, is it easy to get Virgin in these types of buildings? I asked when viewing and they said there were no restrictions but hard to take a letting agents word for it.

The area around is able to receive 152mbps internet but the block doesn't show on Virgin's site, I've submitted an enquiry without reply. Sky's says they can get fiber to the block.

Obviously I will be able to get definitive word (hopefully) from the landlord but wondered if anyone here had any experience of this I could draw from. There was a BT openreach socket on the wall so perhaps I'm limited to an ISP that makes use of this.

Thanks!

First time i've ever came off the phone retentions disappointed. Currently on the cheapest bundle, The Big Easy, and phoned up to see the cheapest they could offer me the Big Kahuna and all they could do was £72. No discounts and including a £3 increase that's happening next month.

Ended up just adding BT Sports as that's the main thing i wanted anyway, still no discounts though so now paying £55 for the cheapest bundle and BT Sports.

Anyone had an email about using everyone's superhubs to create a free wifi network for everyone. Not sure I trust that tbh even though it says it uses a separate line. I can just see that choking the network up....

Free WiFi access is coming to your area
Hi

We’re setting part of our powerful network free. So you can get online in places you never imagined – out and about and even underground. That includes all sorts of places near your home, on the tube, at the airport and around city centres.

Get ready for free WiFi access

In September, we’re enabling lots of Virgin Media Super Hubs (including the one in your home) to create new WiFi areas across the UK. As a Virgin Media customer, you’ll be able to access them all for free. With our clever service, you can automatically connect to smooth, speedy WiFi, wherever it’s available. That means you can crack on with tweeting, WhatsApping, Facebooking and more on the go, without eating up your mobile data allowance.

How does it work?
We’ll switch on a separate internet connection to your Super Hub, which will become part of the WiFi network. But don’t worry, the broadband you love and pay for will stay exclusively yours – and remain just as secure.

Do I need to do anything?
You don’t have to lift a finger because there’s no installation or faff. Just sit back and enjoy your broadband as you do now. We’ll let you know when it’s up and running so you can download your Virgin Media WiFi app and get connected.

If you’d rather not take part, no problem – just let us know. Simply register or sign in to your account at virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia and select My Profile. Bear in mind though, if you do opt out, you won’t be able to use Virgin Media WiFi when you’re out and about.

All the best.

I just got that too,I like how they don't even ask us permission as the bill payer,I'm not happy about this at all.

I cant see how this will not affect network performance,Not only that its putting extra strain on my superhub which already has all the ports filled up + serving wifi to a few devices around my home.

I have opted out not bothered about WiFi when out and not much point anyone using mine as I'm the end house in the street with a dead end. No one comes here apart from the postman.....

You would think they would have to opt out, Sure this wont affect me as I have it in modem mode and use my own router.

The more I think about it, the crazier this idea seems.

EDIT*

How to you opt out?

According to the email, you have to log onto your account on the VM site and then choose your profile to change the settings.

It's just a copy of BT's FON network. As long as you offer wireless for other VM users, you get to log in anywhere on other superhubs around the country. It is supposed to be a completely separate logical network, though I did see some tests that said it used more power (which you're obviously paying for), but it evens out if you use the network elsewhere.

Had a chat with virgin about this and it's basically what btopenzone is. Works off the same concept. They allocate an extra 20mbps on your network for public wifi consumption. It will not work if it's in modem mode so no need to opt out anyway as it uses the superhub.
As a side note, I have been getting consistent drop outs when network is being used extensively for uploading or downloading. Anyone had similar? I have stuck the modem straight into my gaming pc for now to try and trip it again to prove to virgin that it's their crappy modem and not my Asus RT-AC68U! Any feedback would be appreciated! Cheers

Glad to hear modem mode will prevent it, although I generally think it's a good idea. Especially if they're allocating extra bandwidth to accommodate it.

I use the tube VM wifi daily, and if it's going to help with some of the building dead-zones i get with my Three mobile contract then all the better.
