Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had a chat with virgin about this and it's basically what btopenzone is. Works off the same concept. They allocate an extra 20mbps on your network for public wifi consumption.

Really?

I didn't know BT could do that let alone even possible with xDSL technology. So If you've got infinity and it maxes out at 60Meg, how do they give you an extra 20 meg for random people to use?

The Virgin method is completely different. They will have a separate channel capable of 20Mb dedicated to this. Its like what they do with TiVo boxes, they have their own dedicated 10Mb internet modem. BT cant just give you another channel on the same line with 20Meg on it, Virgin can.

From what I have read there is no extra channel or dedicated line. It just adds bandwidth to your existing connection if you have any spare in your area and on your connection.

As a side note, I have been getting consistent drop outs when network is being used extensively for uploading or downloading. Anyone had similar? I have stuck the modem straight into my gaming pc for now to try and trip it again to prove to virgin that it's their crappy modem and not my Asus RT-AC68U! Any feedback would be appreciated! Cheers

Are you using the Superhub ac set to max speed?

If so mine drops out the 5ghz channel if I am transferring/downloading a lot. I set it down to the speed one lower from the top and its fine. Still plenty fast enough.

I'm also wondering how VM expect this to actually work, because some people cannot get wireless signal from the superhub in a different room of the house,Never mind outside or down the street lol.

You're right, BT's version actually uses the customers bandwidth, Virgin's doesn't.

The rumoured 300/15, any word on if the upstream will still have traffic management?

Would love that download, and could deal with the drop of 5Mb on upstream (currently max sync on fttc), but can't deal with the management on upstream (stream to twitch a lot, would be constantly capped).

Thanks.

Who knows, but I wouldn't expect them to increase the upload and remove the throttling. They should maybe have an option to increase the upload cap or something for those that use it for a couple of £. 99% of people hardly upload anything or stream.

My apologies, I stand corrected it seems, Virgin allocate you the extra 20meg, BT don't/can't! :D

Im using the nonsuperhub in modem mode only. It is incredibly frustrating as when it works it is awesome, 160meg down and 13meg up!

Just been on the phone to them again and some cow of an operator listened to my update on the problem, claimed that she could see all the problems and a simple refresh would do the trick. I asked her to elaborate on the problem and tell me exactly what the problem was as this was the moment where I finally had proof that there was something wrong with the line. She said hold on a moment and put me on hold. I thought great, she is actually fixing it.....2 mins later, dead tone!:confused:

Turns out she put me on hold at 5 minutes to 8, probably when her shift was ending and couldn't be arsed!
Called back and got through to someone in an eastern call centre who arranged for a network technician to come out and check the wiring outside the house to the signal box across the road, all sorted within 10 minutes. It's a wonder that more people don't outsource with crappy service like I was shown, the guy was super helpful and even offered to raise a complaint on my behalf after I was seething at the start of the convo! Hopefully all shall be sorted tomorrow!

Just ran a speed test after one of their cable technicians sorted the cable

Thats better, lets hope it doesn't drop now!

Ewww this Wifi thing is gross. Plus in usual Virgin Media style their website is busted for me so I can't sign in to opt out :p

I think it is an incredibly good idea, actually. But I will be opting out, because I don't want to take the chance that it will affect my own connection. Perhaps that is why the site isn't working, overloaded because of people trying to sign in to opt out of it. :D

My internet went dead last night. Spent 1hr on the phone with some technician, tried everything. He eventually booked a technician to come out on Monday, i thought great finally we can get things sorted good and for all.

Internet came back on this morning, but has been on and off, and Virgin have conveniently texted saying they've identified a local problem, so they're 'fixing it' and have cancelled the technician on Monday.

No doubt in a week or so it'll go down for a x number of hours again.

Its infuriating.

Was hoping it might go away on the highest tier. I thought that's what they did with the download traffic management. Got rid of it on the highest tier (152) first, before getting rid of it on the lower ones.
They are tight on the upload anyway, dunno why they gotta throw in limits as well with such low uploads (compared to download).

I believe it is cost (costs more to upload) and the cable tv network was designed for sending to set top boxes not high speed broadband when they rolled it out initially - however this is changing with the new tech they are bringing in but takes time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS - VM using 3 or 3.1.

Superb idea to me
One of the things I miss from moving from BT ADSL was Wifi network.
I'm usually with my Father in his carehome at the weekend so being able to connect to internet on wifi is a God send

Just ordered the QuickStart thing for Virgin at the house I'm moving into on the 1st. The nearest date they could deliver was the 9th. Is this because they deliver them themselves? Or do they use RM/whoever?

EDIT: Got it moved up to the 2nd through their Online Chat. Seems odd that they don't offer the next nearest date... since clearly they are available.

Just had a deal through from virgin.

I currently have 152mb broadband with them only at £43 per month and i did have full sky package at £33 per month (discount for wanting to cancel). The sky deal has now ended and im back up to £75 per month for sky.

Total bill £118 per month!

Had a letter from Virgin which i seem to get every month offering Big Kahuna deal. if i add in sports and movies to the offer its : £75 for 12 then £105 for 5 months!

last year when i got the deal from sky i spent ages on the phone to both companies haggling to get a good deal, i might just make the full switch now to virgin.

Im wanting to get BT sport also which will cost extra from sky, is it included in the sports or big kahuna deal?

They also want an installation charge, if i call up is there any extras i can haggle out of them since i'm currently with sky?

My friend is having issues with a virgin superhub

By a wired connection he'll usually get 100MBPS but by wifi it'll be much slower around 4MBPS and this is with full wifi signal - Connecting to the wifi by either a laptop or computer which is using a wifi card causes the connection to drop quite often - I looked in the router settings but couldn't really see any issues - Any idea what could be causing this
