Virgin Media Discussion Thread

What are people saying to get discounts when they ring?

I've just had an e-mail from Virgin to say my price is going up in February by £3.49 a month. That takes it up to £36.98 for 100MB connection only. :(

Just got home doing some speed tests, and its around 20 now. Usually its capped at 2.8 from somewhere between 6 to 2 am.

Same problem here. Had VM BB installed @ one of my residences in August & have had same issue as yourself since then.

Been told several times that the faults are due to be resolved, every time I've called it's a different date. 27th Jan is the latest date I've been quoted.

Same here, I've just had my e-mail informing me of the £3.49 price rise. Works out as a 8.5% rise... bit of a joke if you ask me but there's not much out there to compete with VM 200MB package. :(

Yeah true, I hate VM. Only with them because of speed and yeah they're good for gaming. i pay £25 a month to them. But honestly BT are a joke £18 line rental + £26 a month NO THANKs

Im having 200mb installed next week, and was wondering what Superhub I should push for, if I was given the choice when they come to install..

I hear the new SH3 isnt very good?
I have a Asus N56U I could put as a router (and SH as modem only), if thats a better option.

I've just had virgin media installed and the superhub isn't great as a router. It doesn't have a lot of options on it and for some reason VPNs won't work though it. I wouldn't really trust the security on it either.

I'll be using it purely as a modem and buying a good router.

How did you guys get £3.49 ?

In my letter its written in bold red saying £3.99 a month from February, my street has rats living inside nappies, yet I have to pay more !

I gave up ages ago trying to get discounts from virgin staff, tried retentions and threats to leave the service even after 20+ years of being a loyal customer, tried the I have a sky letter saying 50%, tried 3 times with different staff not even willing to give £1 off my bill lol

I think the best way is what someone suggested 50 pages back, cancel the virgin contract (if your after the 18 months contract), then get a different person ie your wife, brother or sister but within same address, under quidcos offer here:

http://www.quidco.com/visit/2165/PHD/cashback/offer/122660/

Big Kahuna movies bundle with 200MB broadband, 230+ channels, Sky Movies & phone for £38.50 a month for 9 months, £74 a month thereafter.

So for 9 months you get all the above lot for £38.50, then after 9 months for a further 9 months remaining contact its £74.

Is this still a good deal ?

Only bad thing I can see is you may have some delay time from disconnecting and resigning up under a new name.

I got them to reduce it and freeze at £32.99 a month if I stick with 100mb (150mb when speed upgrade happens in January), 50p a month cheaper than I've been paying this year.

I've not agreed to it yet though, will phone back in a couple of days to try and get it lower as I'm lucky if I get 10mb out of the connection at the moment. They sent out two engineers last night, fixed something to the cable going into the router to reduce power levels as they were really high. Didn't help the speed, so they replaced the router with a superhub 2 thinking it would sort it... it didn't. They were convinced it was a local network or cable fault until they took the router out to the cabinet to try a direct connection and couldn't get any higher speeds. Decided it wasn't something they could fix, and said someone else would have to come to look at the cabinet tomorrow (today).

Plus it's fraud to take out a credit agreement in a false name.

If the contracts cancelled, anyone else in the house over 18 can sign up and pay for the bill surely ? Certainly not suggesting to do fraud.

That is what the other guy did, he said he got his girlfriend to sign up and pay for it via quidco.

Virgin have also done this trick over the phone where the cs advised the existing customer we can resign you up under a new account holder, so they signed up the new customer and he got 9 months half price.....

Yes another person could sign up, but your post read as in suggesting signing yourself up again using another name.

There's 240v in the cabinets now?
Welcome to a congested area.

Also found this if its any use to anyone ie new customers or people that have exited there contract:

http://www.uswitch.com/tv/providers/virgin_media/

The prices are out of date but if you click on it, it redirects you to virgin media website with the discounted prices as I mentioned above (£38.50) for the first 9 months, pretty much the whole package.

No idea if the above works, maybe someone can confirm it ?

Also I noticed on virgin media site under special offer tad> if you are new/existing you can ask for a telephone line rental saver option, so you pay the whole years telephone line rental worth up front for £164, rather then the £17.99 x 12 = £215.99, so anyone can save £51.88 of there virgin bill.

That would be hilarious if someone on the phone starting to speak like someone to get the new deal :p but your right, re-dited my post to make it more clear.

I have linked Quidco + Uswitch sites, maybe others have tried it successfully would be nice to find out, don't see any reason why it would not work.

Been on Virgin BB for over a decade and it's been great 99% of the time, currently on 100mb.

This is today.

Wish sky and vm just kept to a set price, lump it or loathe it approach and they'd probably end up earning more than hiring loads of staff to negotiate a pound off their service or whatever. But it won't change as they have to keep sub numbers up no matter what.
