Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm currently paying £67 for the following:

We watch about 2 hours of TV a week, if that and don't even have a phone. 99% of the programmes we watch are off of our Plex server. Tempted to move to the 100mbps service for £35 a month. As I am an existing customer will they up me to the 152mbps for the same price?

How annoying. To be honest, I think 100mbps would be plenty anyway. I'm half tempted to go for Fibre as I'd rather have 80/20 than 100/12 as I have people streaming off me. I can get Plusnet 80/19 for £27 for the first 6 months and then £37 after that, seems reasonable? Only thing to I can think of that would keep me with VM is if they upgraded their Upload speed.

Using the business packages as a base for what they'll roll out to residential, that's looking unlikely. Don't get me wrong it could easily be done, and will eventually happen (hardware supporting later DOCSIS standards is being installed), but VM seem to prefer to devote existing channels to downstream rather than upstream as they can claim higher headline speeds - they also have little competition in terms of speed, so they don't have a commercial need.

on the phone (not retentions) and got offered to stay on current package (150, M+, weekend) for 47 a month.

If i drop an item, or move packages, my "speedboost" of 150 from 100 also goes.

Urgh.

Was paying £52 a month for 50mb/M+/Phone, best they could do was 6 months at £34.99 then £39.99. Asked if I could get the same deal as a new customer and was told no so decided to cancel.

I'll give Sky a go unless I get a call back offering me the new customer deal, could certainly live without the Tivo box for 12 months!

IIRC if the boost is the new speed for your tier, no.

We've had a couple of speed boosts over the years and it's always remained the same monthly payment, I don't think we even had to pay for our last modem.

So my speed boost has slipped to July-Sept :/ :/ :/

I wouldnt worry about it. The network cant cope with the speed upgrades anyway. Come peak times and it crawls. Im currently getting 100mb out of my 200mb connection.
Im lucky with that, if you read the virgin media forums a lot of people are down to less than 10mb!!!.

what would a good deal be for 200mb broadband. new customer don't really need anything else unless it works out better. Have been with them before if that makes a difference.

i get full 211Mb 24/7,

tbh it just depends on the area

Some areas do have a healthy contention but it seems the majority don't. It also depends what segment you are on.
Its possible.that.someone could get their full speed but a neighbour just a few doors away who has been put on a different segment has very low speeds.
Re segmentation does take place to sort speed issues out but this takes time.
Some people on the forums have been waiting a couple of years and the work still hasn't been done.

I don't think any investment is being put into the current network, they seem to be just adding new customers to an already crippling network.

Does anyone have any experience of being miss-sold services with virgin? if so how did you get on? and how did you go about it?

They contacted my missus roughly 6 months ago offering us a 'free' upgrade to XL tv as a loyalty bonus, we accepted it and thought nothing of it.

Recently checked our on-line account as we were told we could upgrade to 150mb for free now, it turns out they've been charging us for the tv upgrade which we don't want as we barely watch any of the channels and they have changed our phone tariff to one where im paying £2+ for a 13min call to my mums house which is literally down the road and also on a virgin landline. Basically our bills have gone up between £15-£20 a month

Normally id tell them to stick the lot up their arses, but i've checked sky and their internet offering aren't good enough.

Just had an VM engineer, according to him SH 3.0 is crap... He came to see what's wrong with my SH1.0 as it didn't boot, it had 2 blue LED's.

Is anyone on here BB only 200mb package? If so, how much is it p/m?

.

Did you know that so called loyalty bonuses expire ? last year I noticed that newcomers were getting a better deal than me after the initial lower price period.

I contacted Virgin & they said not possible, I'm reading Virgin website wrong etc. We went to Virgins shop in the city centre & they told me the same thing so I insisted they load the webpage & compare my costs. with the advertised price.

Then they agreed I had a bad deal & was paying several pounds more so suggested I phone up Virgin to which I replied I already tried to no avail. She then got on the phone & came back & said that as a loyalty bonus I was going to get a special deal which knocked £8 of our bill but which gave us a saving of just £3 over a newcomer so in effect we had been overcharged £5 a month

I now discover in a Virgin letter that my loyalty discount of £8 will expire in August
So then I will have to haggle again or I'll get £8 added & again charged more than newcomers when in fact the loyalty bonus is only £3 in real terms.
