Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I can confirm after moving house that Virgin media is restricting SSH connections.

I moved to an area with no Virgin support. So i moved to BT and BE. Doing a speed test through my ssh tunnel i get the same speed as i do when i do a speed test without the tunnel.

This means that i was correct when i was moaning that Virgin is restricting traffic through SSH Tunnels.

Also i find the ADSL so much more stable, just the way the http pages load is a big difference to cable. I prefer ADSL. Seems more pro.

Only downsides, dropped from 50mbit to 10mbit download, but that is ok because i have already downloaded half the internet. And my ping on a cs:s death match server in france was better on virgin. But my latency in quakelive has become more stable on ADSL, seems like less packet loss on ADSL.

Just had to cancel my BT and Be* account due to money issues, but on the bright side I'm getting 50Mbps from Virgin Media, which I hope isn't a major let down.

Someone is lucky to be on the 100mbit test :)

I'm not sure I would have much use for 100mb. Can download games in 30minutes or so and theres no strenuous Hd streaming services yet.

Although good thing that perhaps ISP are finely preparing for the future and upgrading network above the threshold for widespread video streaming and other high bandwidth usage. If the majority took these up at the moment, it would be mayhem.

what would a blu-ray movie be in mbps?

Are we ever going to see increased upload speeds? I don't really understand the technicalities of it to suggest that it's not possible. Perhaps someone can clear that up?

Yes, the new upload speeds are going to be 10:1, so 100:10, 50:5, 20:2. Not too shoddy. :) They're being tested now, and will be rolled out area by area (probably coinciding with the release of the 100:10 package?).

hi guys i wonder if you can shed some more information about virgin and their cable service in general. My local telephone exchange says it is 'cable enabled', but i dont get cable on my street. So i emailed their 'cable my street' address. They said they will look into it and speak with their engineer for the area and will get back to me in about 6-8 weeks. Has anybody had experience with this and been successful?
i really hope so - sick and tired of sky just leaching money off me
