Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Welcome to the new Limited Unlimited 50mb from Virgin, apparently some people have received letters stating that they have downloaded too much on their 50mb connection.

I don't buy it. There is nothing on that letter that states he's on the 50mb package.

I absolutely hammer my 50mb, around 300gb a month on average and 500gb+ sometimes. I've have never had any letters.

EDIT: I just read that entire thread and it looks like it may be legit after all. I haven't received one yet though....

Yeah he provided speed tests to back it up apparently. As far as I can gather it's area dependent. Given the lack of investment back in the day, certain areas aren't as good as others capacity and infrastructure wise. I too download around 500GB or so on average each month, and no letter here either. *touch wood!*

It's probably more the fact that they're in a weak area, and their traffic really is dragging the (dying) network down. Once the 5Mbps (10Mbps?) upload is rolled out this year, it'll need heavy network equipment upgrades/improvements to all areas so this shouldn't be present problems after that.

WTF!!!!......how can you possibly need this much bandwidth every month....

Thats a Minimum of 10-20GB a day......are their really that many things to pirate each day?...:D

Im on an unlimited package, yet only on VERY rare ocasions do i need more than 100GB (downloading a complete MAME Romset once or twice a year)....normaly my usage is in the 40-60GB territory.

I just cannot conceive of what you would need so much bandwidth for each and every month....are you a buisness user or something?.

Hmmm...i guess there is that much stuff to pirate each day then.

I'm not implying I'm using it for nefarious deeds, I'm simply saying that the business I use it for is minding my own business :)

Don't assume the worst just because you don't see a need to use that much bandwidth.

WTF!!!!......how can you possibly need this much bandwidth every month.... My mum's on an unlimited package, yet normally her usage is in the 2 to 3 GB territory. I just cannot conceive of what you would need so much bandwidth for each and every month....are you a buisness user or something?.

;)

No need to be facetious.....

Is there any way for me to check my monthly usage, does it appear on your bill for instance?

No, you'd have to track it yourself. You can use software (such as Networx), and some routers track usage over the course of the day/week/month etc. If you download a lot, some services keep track of your bandwidth and give you monthly reports too. While not accounting for your other usage, they do give you a good idea overall.

Had 50mbit 2 weeks and already got a warning letter lol... "please confine your downloads to between 9pm and 9am"... ffs... that's what i get for signing up in an over-subscribed area :(

Not very speedy between 5pm-9pm either :(

They're "working" on the problem... apparently it's been ongoing for 2-3 months

Wow, I've never heard of anyone on 50mb receiving a letter! I'm guessing it's because of your localised capacity issue, though why would you spend out for 50mb only to use it between 9pm and 9am when you could do just the same with 20mb?

Silly VM!
