Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask a few questions about Virgin as I might be moving into a house with it (I think it's 50meg).

How reliable and stable is Virgin? Any downtime periods? Is it good for online gaming?

I've heard of Virgin slowing down in the evenings, but by how much does it slow down?

Where I live currently has Sky which is terrible, around 3mb download during the day but in evenings it slows down to 0.5 - 0.05 (literally) between 5:30 - 11:30 every day. Which makes it almost impossible to use during that period.

I need a faster processor.

Stuff is downloading on newsgroups far too fast for my PC to decode the information and it's slowing my PC down :D

It's an X2 6000+ aswell! :p

Change the temp and download to any drive but C: in your NZB program and that should do the trick

VM slows down horribly on a night for me (I'm on 20MB, Tyne and Wear)

Sometimes I even struggle to watch a 3 minute 720p video on youtube.

Shouldn't that be....

You tube slows down horribly at night.

What seems to be forgotten is that the 50mb speed is only really available within VM's network. Once it has left their network you are limited by everyone else's connections.

There are some sites which are so badly hosted and overused that even if you had a 50GB connection you wouldn't see any improvement at all.

Lets be thankful that we are not stuck with 56k :D

I have:

  • XL BB (20MB)
  • XL TV
  • XL Phone

With these added:

  • Call Bar/Reject
  • Fully itemised Bill
  • Paper Bill charge
  • 1 Additional V-Box

and line rental for the phone line.

My dad pays the bill as I still live at home (I'm 28!!)... but I pay for the BB.

All this comes in at £76 a month, with me paying about £30 for the BB.

My sis moved out ages ago so I've removed the additional box and my parents don't watch much TV so I've dropped the TV package to L.

This results in a drop to £56..

I asked about upping the BB to 50MB and they said the charge would go up by about 10 quid... but I'd have to sign a new 12 month contract.

Thing is.. I might be moving out.. so its kinda pointless upping the BB... but I'd love the speed.. as 20MB is utter *****.

Wish there was a way around the contract :(

As long you dont download at certain times. Internet speed should be fine. I do all my downloads after 9pm. Don't download anything before that.

When it comesto watching Youtibe/Iplayer not had any problems. Been with Virgin for 4 months now if im right. And im only on the 10MB line.

A question to ya all... Does anyone know Virgin's FUP limit? I know Virgin say it's Unlimited. But really that dosn't mean "Unlimited".
Regardless whatever packae you have. Just curious atm.

I've had bad experiences with two WRT610N routers (both slow down to like 5Mbit after a few hours) and I'm still using my WRT54G /w Tomato, so I get maximum 35Mbit!

Virgin promised me to send their router, twice, for two weeks now. I know it'll be junk, but I still want the full speed.. I think a complaint is in order.

as far as i know its slowly rolling out over the uk but im not 100% sure. only reason i noticed is i called a friends house and his had been upgraded aswell.
