Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I can't see it happening. Docsis is pretty limited in upload on 3.0. I think I read it was about 120mbs for a segment so would only take 5 gamer users to saturate the bandwidth. I suppose of upload is the priority and you can get decent FTTC speeds that's the way to go.

Anyone heard the latest/most recent news about Virgin Media's potential (not yet confirmed) plans to roll-out an upload speed increase? Simply making their broadband package speeds asymmetric 10/1, e.g. 200Mbps download and a 20Mbps upload.

The packages are supposed to correspond like this after the upgrade/upload speed increase plans, though that is if they actually go to plan and become a real life thing, I think:

  • 50Mbps download - 5Mbps upload.
  • 70Mbps download - 7Mbps upload. - (I'm on the 70Mbps package as of and since October 2015 - so pretty much well over a year since I got my upgrade from 50Mbps to 70Mbps).
  • 100Mbps download - 10Mbps upload.
  • 150Mbps download - 15Mbps upload.
  • 200Mbps download - 20Mbps upload. (However I think the GAMER-200Mbps package will end up with a upload speed of 30Mbps or higher (depending on Virgin Media themselves)).

It used to be 10% of your download speed.

So they will probably give it back and then use it as an excuse when people phone and complain about the next price rise.

All cancelled and disconnected, just waiting for the hub pack to get here. The fix date is in November so it'll be interesting to see if it gets pushed back again or not.

What are the standard prices for broadband and phone now? As usual with VM it's all obfuscation and trickery on their site.

Until this month, I was paying £32 for 200mb broadband (phone rental paid up front) with a £10 discount negotiated via retentions.

The discount has now dropped to £7 until Oct 2017, as agreed, but my monthly charge has now risen to £34.48, meaning I'm paying £27.48. If I add standard phone rental of £19 to this then it comes to £46.48.

The website is showing £45 per month for what I have but says "for 12 months". Is this an introductory offer or the standard price? If the former then what's the standard price for 200mb with phone? Am I still getting a reasonable discount or are they screwing me over by charging me more than the standard cost in the first place?

Found it. Standard retail price on 200mb is now £34.48 which makes sense.

Have upgraded to the 'gamer' version for an additional fiver after checking I'll keep my discount.

Have also renewed line rental saver. Today is the last day it's £184, goes up to £196 tomorrow so get in there quick!

The price i found on the virgin website was £45.25

Anyone know if Virgin Media post details of over subscribed/congested areas on their network?

I have access to their fibre services in my area but i don't want to jump from one congested network to another.

I currently have BT FTTC but over the two years i have had it my downloads and uploads have declined by over 25% due to crosstalk from increased subscription from other FTTC users.

The HomeWorks package is 300/20. Apparently Virgin are doing a trial in Birmingham providing 100Mbps upload speed.

That'll be assuming only one person in a large area tries it at once ;)

Sadly as a VM customer still waiting for that on download at any time other than 3am (and even then 25Mbps per connection/thread) the thought of 300/100 is just a pipe dream.

Anyone else's TiVo box gone from Turtle speed slow to tectonic plate shifting slow recently?

Ours has just gone woeful past couple of weeks.

Yep definitely seems to have gotten worse which I didn't even know was possible.

Been woeful since I got it a few years ago. Its an awful underpowered piece of kit.

Believe there is a new box on the way. Thankfully most of the stuff we watched is streamed or from my plex server. :)

Nope you have to sign up and see, On the first day we went live it started and didn't improve for a month as the fix dates kept getting pushed back.

Ended up leaving.

I had an interesting conversation with 'retentions' , the bloke started of by basically lieing about contracts and cancelling. So I just said ' I can cancel and I would like to cancel' ended up dropping my package and paying less, but looking at their home page, I didn't get a particularly good deal.
Unfortunately I can't be bothered to argue any more so I'm going to stick with it until they put the prices up again.

Not very happy though, they used to be a lot more helpful.

Go to their community forums and search your post code or those around it. Will give you a good idea.

Ahhhhhh... this is sooooo much better. Installed Zen today and can already feel the massive improvement in stability.

I've never had any issues regarding speed. I have always had full speed however I did have some issues at one point and that was due to me having too good a signal to the cabinet (directly outside old home) and they had to attenuate it or something. In the new house it's across the road. I was the closest to the old cabinet but the new one I'm probably within the top 10 closest to it, depends where they decided to cross the road with the cable or my side has it's own cabinet dunno how it's all been wired up.

Again I get better speed than what I actually paid for because I'm so close to the cabinet. I'm on 200/10 I believe and speedtests usually show around 210/12.

I need to set up one of those ping graphs at the new home to check I don't have any issues I don't know about. However I believe most my neighbours have Sky dishes so they probably have ADSL with them.
