Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hi can anyone please spec me a wifi router to bridge an old vm superhub?

My flat is over 36 years old with concrete walls and superhub is unable to reach all the rooms.

Many thanks

Is this best option or is there a standard cheaper option worth going for?

cheers again

It's certainly one of the best options, generally speaking (I have a pfSense box and AP PRO). The Ubiquiti kit is decent alright - albeit it's still a consumer wifi chip not a 'real' enterprise one - but it's not a miracle worker. The location of the device will matter, and it may or may not do better than the SH in your situation. Only one way to find out... Generally I found my Pro gave better coverage and range than my SH3, but not by some mythical mile.

The LR might be a better bet in your case, but either way they're still all restricted by legislation to a set power output, whether SH3 or UAP or anything else. Worth a go though imho, and it certainly transformed our wifi network (also an old house).

Thanks fella will give it a go :)

I have the LR version mounted on the ceiling at the top of my stairs. It provides a strong signal throughout the house. In fact it provided a stronger signal in my living room than my old ASUS did when it was in the next room.

You could just buy a AP AC Lite and switch off the WiFi on the SH and see if that solves your issues. If not you have the option to run a network cable and put the AP in a different room.

cheers how does the AC lite connect to SH? via ethernet? not sure how it works.

These Ubiquiti are getting gret reviews :)

Via Ethernet using a PoE injector that's included in the box.

SH <----> PoE Injector <----> Access Point.

The injector means that you only have a run a single Ethernet cable to the access point as it also carries the power.

Yes it would connect to the SH via Ethernet and are also powered via the Ethernet cable. You can also connect wirelessly and use it as a WiFi repeater but generally that is not a good idea as it halfs the bandwidth.

Thanks chaps I'll pick one of these bad boys up :)

Any chance you could do a full write up on the install (a how to guide) and how easy it was overall, etc.

I'm interested but I didn't realise it was able to function on it's own without any other Ubiquitu equipment like a router telling it what to do. I imagine you would need to login via the assigned IP address or default settings initially.

If this is the case I may just get an access point to start with then add one of their routers later. I imagine the routing capabilities of my superhub3 is terrible since it's a free router.

Banging my head against a wall with these at the moment. Was upgraded from 100 to 150 on the 2nd November, from then til mid December my speedtest maxed out almost everyday at any time I did it at no less than 162.

In the last week or so its started fluctuating massively some times to below 10.

Virgin are refusing to acknowledge any issue, with one advisor pointing out it must be something at my end, it isn't, nothings changed and it does on occasions go back to 160. They did send an engineer (i wasnt in) and he said to my wife he couldnt get a speedtest of more than 100

I've put a complaint in but they're just flat out refusing to take any blame.

Virgin oversubscribe in areas or on their cmts. The promotion on speed upgrade is a joke and virgin should manage the bandwidth problems rather than just saturating the bandwidth.
You need to request a refund for reduced service and ask if a an F number has been registered on the system. Be prepared to be mucked around and fobbed off for months and months. So either put up with it and phone every month for discount, or leave.

What needs to happen is a presentation or article put through the door which educates the average joe who are.unaware of the congestion throttling. The more people who are getting discounts the quicker virgin will actually upgrade their equipment.

One last thing i cancelled virgin a week ago or so, i have had 5 different calls asking why i've left and is there anything they can do? I told them to stop calling me.

My bt infinity is due the 3rd-4th, will update here

Yeah ive had the over utilisation before and they eventually came and fixed it.

they've definitely changed something, there's no way it would change from being rock solid to what it is currently with no intervention from them

Wednesday evening I was receiving 0.98 download and 1.03 upload, and I'm supposedly on the up-to 100Mbps connection.. Considering complaining for a partial refund, I'm spending nearly £60 a month (basic TV, broadband, phone line etc) and get terrible speeds :/

So you guys wanna hear something funny?

The 50% discoutn VM said they'd give me for the SH3 latency issue + utilisation issue in this area as of 11th December was not applied. Instead they applied a £6 compensation... So phoned this today and they apologised and said the billing dept have been contacted whilst I was on hold to confirm the compensation is going to be re-calculated, and that I would be notified on this once done.

1: I have no confidence in being notified.
2: I have no confidence they will actually apply 50% discount to my bill either but let's see.

Maybe I should just tweet them my BQM update every day...

Just had another message from the VM mod team, resolution to my issue has been pushed back to April and they're applying credit to my bill to cover 4 months...

Haven't checked yet but no doubt it'll be less than a months bill lol...
