Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hey all, I'm totally overpaying for my virgin at about £76 for phone, tv and internet.

I really only need internet.

I see they now do net only deal 30 day rolling contracts where I can get 100Mbs for £38 or 200Mbps for £43

I really don't need TV or phone as I haven't watched live TV in a year or two.

Has anyone managed to get these 30 day rolling deals for any cheaper?

I could potentially sign up to another 12 months to get a full package, but I may be moving out in 10 months, depends on how good the deal is. What's the best option these days? Just call and say you want to cancel or should I use leverage from another company?

I think if you move and cancel the remaining contract because they cannot offer a service in your new area, they don't charge you.

If they do offer it, you will probably have to pay in the balance. But with discounts, it may still be cheaper to contract for the full time and stay on a lower package for the 10 months instead of a rolling contract. Do the sums by calling them up.

It's gone midnight now, but test tomorrow @antijoke (first 563 and then 443) and let me know how you get on.

Well I tried both ports around 11am and both gave me a speed of 17Mb/s, same nzb file.

Not as fast I was getting but I am not sure if the problem is with the easynews servers or not, as when I changed from 563 to 443 my downloads jumped from 2.5Mb/s to 17Mb/s.

Might be time to look for another provider.

What download client are you using and on what computer?

Thanks for getting back with your results, I was wondering how you got on. Tweaknews (Highwinds) have a five euro recurring monthly special atm. Five years' retention, full access to the usual Highwinds Media servers (same as Newshosting et al) and free IPVanish VPN thrown in (also owned by HW). I'm getting 380Mbps from them on port 443. I don't know if I can link it here but you should find it in a search. If not, drop me a Trust or PM.

SABNZB on a mixture of a Windows 10 laptop and a Windows 10 desktop. Updated to latest versions of SABNZB.

I'll check that out.

Try NZBGet, Sab is written poorly and really slow.

This. I'm pretty sure I already posted about it in this thread, but SAB is written in Python, and is single threaded. NZBGet is written in C++ and is way faster. On a high speed line you can literally double your speeds just by switching from SAB to NZBGet.

Then you're deluded.

Wrong again.

I never have issues, or it is extremely rare if I do. I run two teams of home PC engineers, we remotely connect to 10000's of home users laptops, tablets and desktops across the entire UK, to run software fixes, windows refreshes, internet connectivity issues etc. Out of all the ISPs I have to deal with, Virgin has the most stable connections with best speeds. The worst is Talk Talk who are simply appalling.

So you're saying all of the users in this thread, on Facebook and on the VM forums who have issues are wrong?

Both NZBGet and Sabnzbd both max out my 200mb connection, neither is quicker. Sabnzbd is totally fine. Its more likely your news provider or connection.

I recently switched from Supernews as it was getting slow, now on another provider(Newsgroup Ninja) and its back up to maxed out 25mb/s.

Also, how do people manage to get 45mb/s? Is that the 300 meg home business connection thing?

The new VIVID350 package, which maxes out around 380-385 real world. SAB is definitively slower than NZBGet, even the devs admit it. Check the usenet subs on Reddit. You might manage on 200Mbps but anything much more and you're going to struggle, especially if you don't have a very high end CPU (SAB is only single threaded, remember).

I've received two letters over the weekend, one informing me of a price increase and the other stating that my cable will be deactivated on the 1st November for a day as part of a network upgrade. I wonder if I will be eligible for 350mb speeds after this.

Yeah you need the SH3, it still has the Puma6 chipset issues (but I've never noticed), and I didn't need to renew or extend our contract. I just went on webchat and upgraded from Gamer200 to VIVID350 for £4 extra a month. YMMV.
