Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Got the price increase email the other day but it's not increasing until the end of the current contract period.

Which is nice of them.

Thanks for getting back with your results, I was wondering how you got on. Tweaknews (Highwinds) have a five euro recurring monthly special atm. Five years' retention, full access to the usual Highwinds Media servers (same as Newshosting et al) and free IPVanish VPN thrown in (also owned by HW). I'm getting 380Mbps from them on port 443. I don't know if I can link it here but you should find it in a search. If not, drop me a Trust or PM.

Whats the name of the Deal ? Or link if possible

I was initially cautious of posting it, but as far as I can see there's no rules against it (it's not an affiliate link or somesuch). It's for Tweaknews, a Dutch provider now bought out by Highwinds but still using EU servers. The deal comes with no speed caps, 40 connections, free SSL, and a free IPVanish/HW backed zero-log VPN, all for five Euros. You can find the deal here.

Thanks going give a go as cheaper than supernews

Another problem i have is super hub 3 port port forward not working, Do i ask virgin for a super hub 2ac to replace my super hub 3 or do i buy a cheap router and use modem mode.

VM won't swap SH3 for SH2, as the higher speed tiers aren't supported on SH2. The port forwarding is a pain, you have to add your forwards in ascending numerical order or they won't work. You can of course put it into modem mode and buy another router instead. I built a BSD box with an APU2C4 and bought a Ubiquiti Unifi AC PRO for wifi.

Well contract with Virgin was finished & they put my prices up....

A few stroppy phone calls later...

Full House TV + 100Mb broadband + weekend phone + new TIVO 6 box...... £42.99 inc line rental :)

Got a call today after cancelling Saturday - £26 for 12 months and getting a new router as mine seems to be having issues.

100mb Broadband and Telephone, saves changing :)

Hi Guys,

Was with VM over a year ago, had that Netgear SH with the dual band Wifi, and never had any issues gaming, i swapped to Sky Q though as i got a 4K TV and the VM box was disgustingly slow and bad at the time, anyhow fast forward a year and my Sky Q contract is up, i would have stayed with Sky but unfortunately there is no FTTC in my area, and having lived with 3.5mb for the past year, being basically unable to use any on demand services and gaming being terrible at times due to such a poor connection i decided to look around. Via work we can get a good deal with VM (£75 pm for 300mb Fibre, All Channels, all movies, all skysports / Bt sports and multiroom 2 x 4K VM boxes) i decided to go for that.

Anyhow they are sending the kit out next week, so i decided to look into this new SH3 to see what features it had , and i seemed to have unearthed a lot of info pointing to the SH3 being terrible for online gaming :( being as i pretty much exclusively play Destiny 2 on my Xbone or Everquest on my PC this has me worried.

Should i be worried? what are my options? i was thinking of just putting the SH3 into modem mode and using a Cisco Meraki MR18 i have for Wifi around the house, or just buying Orbi or Google Wifi to put around the house, but i read that modem mode makes little to no difference to the issues people are having, notably high latency and lots of packet loss.

Some people are saying i should ask for a SH2AC and be put on the "Gamer" bundle or something?

What are peoples experiences with the SH3 who play online games? is it really as bad as people are saying? Has anyone found a workaround?

The other option is i cancel the VM contract and take up a new Sky Package and live with 3.5mb ADSL Again lol, atleast i know its terrible and cant be disappointed any further with it.

I’m using the Hub 3 in modem mode with a Asus RT-AC88u. The Hub 3, or rather the Puma 6 chipset does have issues but I can honestly say, I’ve never had issues with latency whilst gaming. Yes, the TBB graph that I have running looks awful, although not quite as bad as others I’ve seen that are also on 24 downstream channels. Having said that though, the average latency is consistent (going by the graph).

Due to the impending price increase I called today to negotiate.

He was gonna give me my 100mb for £28 per month which I was happy with as I was due to pay £34.

Instead I asked for 200mb for £34 and give given that instead.

Not bargain of the century but not too bad.
