Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Their internet is awesome but we didn't get on at all with their tivo box. Must slower and clunkier UI than Sky. I haven't tried their new V6 box or whatever it's called though. So we switched to sky Q for TV and kept virgin fiber. Best of both worlds :)

I'm seriously thinking about leaving Sky to join Virgin, but the SH3 latency/jitter issue is the only thing putting me off... how bad is the issue really? Will it ruin Overwatch and other online FPS games?

Unless you want to burn your wallet paying for some of these ridiculous ISPs offering crazy speeds the average person will never fully utilise, Virgin are the very best. Or at least when it comes to my connection anyway. :p

I'm on the Vivid 200 package, but regularly get the speeds shown below. The connection has gone down once in about a year and a half when they were doing maintenance on one of the exchanges, and that's it. It's been absolutely spot on. :)

I agree TiVo is pretty slow and klunky.

Ah Virgin, enjoy it while it lasts. My connection went from good to horrendous over the course of a few months. For weeks Virgin acknowledge an issue but it wasn't classified as significant enough for an engineer visit. I cancelled, they obviously thought I was joking as the very next day two vans rocked up on my street clearly trying to sort it out.

I moved to BT, zero issues in over two years.

I did have a few issues last year with an older modem, needed to reboot it a few times a day. One phone call and they sent the latest Superhub, been rock solid for 9 months now.

Been on Virgin for about 15 years. Only really had 2 issues, one in the NTL days where I could only stay connected for minutes at a time, very tiresome when playing WoW. It just started happening one night and persisted, NTL found no fault and suggested us having a hardware fault so I dug around the internet specifically about our netgear hub and found similar issues so I downloaded new firmware and the problem went away. I can only put it down a gremlin.

The other issue was about 6 years ago where at peak times our speed would get wrecked and we'd have huge packet loss. From memory it was due to our local box being overloaded. So many people switching to VM I guess that the network was under to much strain.

On the whole it's been a legendary service so I've had no reason to want to move ISP. Downloading from Steam yesterday I peaked at 27.5MB/s, I'll have that and more thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Fills me with a little confidence that in in 15 years you've only had 2 issues. I have about 2 issues a year with BT, hence my reason to switch.

I'm pretty happy with virgin. A lot of people complaining about the lag problem with the SH3, but haven't noticed it as a casual gamer. The WiFi is poor on it, but then again I'm in a block of flats with horrendous interference. Ended up purchasing Google WiFi to solve it

Unless their latest box is something revolutionary expect a horrifically slow EPG. Sky+ was miles ahead, never mind Sky Q. It's infuriating when I use the Virgin box after being used to Sky Q.

They are good (when it actually works) for raw speed downloads of large files as well as browsing the internet/ streaming shows in 4K, 1080p etc but God awful for gaming thanks largely to their atrocious new super hub 3 which has a known fault with the chipset inside it and of course, mass over subscription in many areas. Expect to lag like a female dog.

Been a customer for 6 years, had the very occasional drop - like once every few months, and fixed within a minute.
Definitely best service I've ever used. Consistently hitting advertised (150mb) speeds

I haven't found that once, Overwatch at 27ms ping

Virgin is the only option I have for fibre (thanks to BTw continually pushing the date for FTTC back) but they refuse to install on my property because I require the installation to be at the rear of the house rather than the front.
