Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Far to many problems so I read, customer service seems shoddy, Richard Branson doesn't even own it anymore, using the name to blag potential customers.

If you're in an area that isn't over-utilised then it's mostly flawless - dead fast, almost never any issues. If you're in an over-utilised area then your speeds will crash unbelievably and the support you get from virgin will be almost non existent.

Just monitor your speeds regularly at peak times while you're still in your cooling off period and you're good

I ditched Virgin a while back, had the dreaded over utilisation issue (Area 20). Speed was fantastic outside of peak hours, but between 5pm and 11pm, especially at weekends it slowed to an absolute crawl to the point that I couldn't even stream music. Moved to 76mb Fibre with EE, whilst the headline speed is slower the connection is rock solid. Also had the TiVo box, very poor compared to Sky, however this is based on the old model so newer one might be much better.

Wish I could get Virgin. Wish I could get BT Infinity too for that matter. Crappy basic ADSL is all I can get.

Back when I had Virgin they were great when it worked and when I didn't have to contact them. When it went wrong, oh my god did it go very wrong.
SSE dug through the fibre cables to my house when fixing some gas pipes. This was not Virgin't fault but Virgin made the whole process of getting it fixed an absolute nightmare.
SSE are under no obligation to report to Virgin that they had damaged the cables (if it was BT cables then they would be) so didn't report it and advised me to do so, which I did. Cue being told to re-boot my router while the SSE guys stand outside with one half of the cable in each hand.
Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for an end user to report an infrastructure problem. They sent a cable guy out after 2 days who looked at my cable point and said "Yup, they dug through the cables outside". He reported it back to Virgin who....... did nothing. Meanwhile SSE closed up the trench.
I called Virgin again who told me to re-boot my router and all my PCs this time. They then sent another engineer who agreed with the first that SSE had cut the cables. He agreed to report it.
2 more weeks passed and I heard nothing so I called up again and gave them hell. After refusing to reboot my router and generally shouting at them they finally agreed to send an infrastructure engineer out to me. He turned up the next and day said "Yup, SSE have cut the cables". This time I wanted names of managers and other stuff. Another few days passed without anything happening before another field engineer turned up at my house unannounced and agreed with the first 3 that SSE had cut the cables to me house.
This farce went on for another 2 weeks of me getting nowhere. In the end I called customer retentions and requested to be cut off as I was unable to actually receive what I was paying for. Cue an absolute flurry of activity and roads being dug up to get me connected again.
To be fair, once I got to the right people they fixed it quite quickly. They also gave me my entire package of TV/Phone/Net for free for 12 months.

It did sour the whole experience though.

Virgin Media is the best when it comes to internet, easily I get 189 out of 200mb some may get better but that's the best I have got from a variety of providers , the V6 box took a while to get used to but I don't mind it's their equivalent to sky's q box

They are good (when it actually works) for raw speed downloads of large files as well as browsing the internet/ streaming shows in 4K, 1080p etc but God awful for gaming thanks largely to their atrocious new super hub 3 which has a known fault with the chipset inside it and of course, mass over subscription in many areas. Expect to lag like a female dog.

Transferred from BT about 6 months ago and have found similar. Awesome downloads, but get more lag on games and my pings have gone from about 28 to around 40/50. I don’t really play FPS games so I can live with the slower pings.

I had the HUB3 (its not a super hub) since beta testing and I had far less jitter than all screenshots peeps posted on 200Mb/s then 300Mb/s but as soon as I went to 350Mb/s its a mess like other users screenshots but I do not play MP.

I think it is not just the Intel Puma chipset (effects modem mode and router mode wired or wifi) bug but down to what you are connected to at VM end and if my set up changed going from 300 to 350.

Check your Config file (if newly upgrades/joined but should be fine as 12Mb/s UL is Vivid 200 specs then power levels as UL is bang on so expect downstream levels may be wonky.

I phoned through on the standard number and chose the cancel my subscription option, when talking to them they gave me a 6 month offer which I declined and cancelled at this time (this was the Saturday) On the Tuesday I had a missed call and searching the number this was Virgin - a few days later they managed to call when I was home and gave me the offer.

At the time I had not signed up to anyone else.

I phoned up and haggled but the deal was carp. Did a bit of googling and found a Sky deal for a similar bundle at £50 then phoned up cancellations, bit more haggling & they caved :)

You guys and others clearly have the gods looking down on you when you call :)

Admittedly my first call, but the best price I was just given was £60.99 from my existing price of £75.97 which is currently for Full House TV - VIVID 152mb - Talk Weekends.

Seeing as the 152mb no longer exists I'm dropping down to 100mb, everything else the same, although that did include the free upgrade to a V6 box.

Needless to say I left it and will try again over the weekend to see if who I end speaking to will offer something better.

2 Years this month.

How do I check my Config file. I'm running in modem mode at the moment and I cant find it.

Be aware of very likely utilisation issues. I have heard of people being turned away from having Virgin's internet installed because of ongoing utilisation in their area.

I'm on the Gamer package so I get priority traffic at peak times. Even in Loughborough, which is a reasonable sized town, but with over 10000 students, I'm getting consistently 200Mb all day long.

i have been with VM ever since the blueyonder days and in all that time i can count on one hand the amount of times it has gone down.
i have always got full speed i would never change BUT i would not touch VM-TV or landline ever
