Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well my internet has suddenly dropped to an halt, usually get full 200Mbps speeds but currently sitting around 10-20Mbps. I initially thought congestion issues again but I checked the router stats.

-20dBmV power levels... Something has gone wrong. Engineer visit booked for Friday!

Is anyone who has both TV & Broadband running the Superhub 3 in Modem Mode?

The reason I ask is that I got my new V6 box and hub today, carried out the installation as instructed, but the V6 box couldn't do its thing because I'd switched the hub to modem mode (the V6 is plugged in to the hub). It required me to change the hub back to normal mode to allow the V6 to download the software etc.

I just wondered if now I'm all up and running I can switch back to modem mode without causing my V6 any problems?

You should connect your Tivo to the internet, either via wired or wireless to your router. If you're using a separate router and your SH3 in modem mode, then connect the Tivo to the separate router.

Yes you can switch it back to modem mode no issues now. Before you do, if you use Netflix open the Netflix app in the TiVO menu first. It requires router mode also, to authenticate the app. Once that's done (it's opened and started working / let you log in) you are safe to switch to modem mode and stay there. If you switch to modem mode first, the Netflix app will refuse to work forever more. It's a PITA.

Thanks both for the info.

Why is your TiVo V6 even plugged into the hub if you are running it in Modem mode??

Once you switch to Modem mode the SH3 turns off all RJ-45 ports and wireless except the one you use to run the cable to your router. In modem mode the only thing plugged into the SH3 should be your router and everything else comes off your router.

Hence my question...

There is no mention of using the V6 with the SH 3 in modem mode in the instructions.

Even the tech guy I ended up speaking to said the V6 didn't need to be plugged into my router even if running in modem mode. Although it's quite clear that you can only switch it over to modem mode once the V6 has done its thing (downloading software etc.)

Ah I missed that last night. Everything I said is true (you need a direct connection to the hub in router mode to set up the box and Netflix), but the V6 will need an internet connection all the time. So, if you're in modem mode you need to plug it into your router or set it up on your wireless network.

That's not really true. I set up a V6 by plugging it Tivo -> hub1 -> hub2 -> Asus router -> SH3 in modem mode. Downloaded and updated with no problems. The install instructions say to connect the Tivo to your SH, but don't specify how you need to do that.

Yes, this works and I now have my configuration as SH3 (Modem Mode) - Asus Router - V6.

The fact remains that in the setup instructions there is No mention of running the SH3 in Modem Mode and how to connect the V6 should you decide to. Seeing as they tell you setup the broadband first, I did and configured it as I had previously and switched the SH3 into modem mode. Then as per the instructions plugged the V6 into the SH3, clearly a blonde moment, but seeing as the previous Tivo wasn't plugged into the SH the thought never crossed my mind and I literally followed the printed instruction.

What I find slightly staggering is that I told the tech on the phone it was in modem mode and he said, Yes, it was fine, even after I asked him if it should be plugged into my router due to this.

What is does seem clear is that should you decide to run in Modem Mode you can't have the V6 plugged into the SH3.

They are only going to give instructions for the default installation method ie SH3 as the only modem/router. As soon as you start connecting your own equipment, you're on your own. Once you have the SH3 in modem mode, it's mostly ignored and most of everything else happens on your router.

I think you can, assuming your Tivo can get an IP address, but as you only have one active port on the SH in modem mode, you'd lose everything else. Your SH3 in modem mode might need rebooting to see it, but intrinsically modem mode should just pass your straight through to the headend to get an IP and then to the internet.

I think the problem you illustrated is that VM support aren't very good. When it's backend stuff that needs fixing and you can get high enough to talk to a specialist, you're okay, but people on the front line are pretty much just outsourced and reading scripts.

When I got my V6 ordered, VM would only send a self install kit if I could plug it into the SH3. I said yes, even though the V6 and SH3 are on different floors, because I knew that they really meant can I connect it to the internet rather than rely on the coax connection. Anything else and they would have sent out (and charged for) an engineer visit just so that they don't have the hassle of phone support and the customer doesn't get confused.

Sorry bud, wasn't having a dig at you, I was exasperated by the half trained monkeys on technical support must have been telling you. Bunch of idiots :(

:) No worries. Totally understand, can't say I'm too impressed with them especially as that one call lasted just shy of 45 minutes!

I see a lot of people here using the SH3 in Modem mode, is the SH3 that bad with its connectivity to wireless / wired devices?

My primary device is my PC and I have an AC1200 wireless adapter on it? It's also only about 5 meters max away from the router.

This thread sets a bad precidence as you'll only see people who have problems with it, I've had a few drops off in the time I've had my SH3 but nothing that isn't back connected quickly, used to get annoying when watching Netflix over the wifi and quality would drop out of 4k to 480 then back again, switched to cable and don't have that issue no more.

Why not run some cat 5? Faster, more secure, more reliable.

The thing with all the Superhubs is that they are cut down to make them easy to support and simple for the customer, so they lack a lot of functionality that is now considered standard on a home router that you can buy from £80 and upwards. The lack of external aerials also make the wireless signal suffer. You may find it's okay (Puma 6 problems not withstanding) if you're not doing anything other than plugging into for a connection, but if you want anything more complex from a router, it's just too limited. That's why modem-mode exists, so you can at least add a router that meets your needs if the SH is too basic.

If you do not plug the V6 to the WWW (by some method) all you will get is normal TV, no catch up or on demand etc. as it has no built in modem unlike previous boxes.

Installer is talking tosh.

I was under the impression that the TV guide requires internet connectivity as well so it's pretty much a necessity.

edit: my hub has never been out of modem mode since getting V6, if you're having trouble connecting wirelessly try playing with wireless settings.

Hi guys, I posted this on the VM forums, but would like to post it here for some impartial input, dealing with my parents and im taken back by how much they pay per month.

First, small history, been with NTL (Belfast) then stayed on with VM, over the years we never really got updated with any new equipment, or super hub stuff, this in itself isn't the problem, as changing the current box would be to much of a shock to my parents lol.

Our box is a very very big standard silver box design, no recording features at all, simple scart output etc. TV package comes up on our bill as TV (XL), I gather this includes HD channels etc..we recieve no sports channels etc..not that any of those are wanted. We wouldn't want these anyways, most is for my mother, Dave, Fox, Gold or whatever its called now. No need for HD quality.

Out internet currently is sitting about 80mb, which is actually way more than we need, on what I think is the first Superhub version. Its listed as Superfibre 70 on the bill.

Phone is basic, though getting charged 19.99 per month seems very steep.

The package comes in at £85.66pm. This in comparison to what many have seems extortionate.

Now what I want is nothing more, nothing replaced etc, surly this bill can be made a lot cheaper, especially compared to the new offered, even after the 1year introduction price.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
