Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Any news on when they are going to increase the upload speeds?? I'm using their vBackup to backup some important stuff to the cloud and at this rate it's going to take over 2 weeks for initial upload :D

------------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 100.0 MB (104857600 bytes)
Total time taken : 16.97 seconds (16972 milliseconds)
Throughput : 6178.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 6.18 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 49424.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 49.42 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Back to full speed now.

Question: How come you get 5Mbit/s upload and I get 2.5???

EDIT: Never mind, found the upload rollout schedule :)

EDIT2: apparently my line is already enabled for higher upload speeds, so how come I'#m not getting 5Mbit/s upload and only 2.5?

Sorry for digging this up but I'm confused and concerned about this usenet traffic shaping, I was under the impression that 50mbit doesn't have traffic management as per this table; http://shop.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy.html

I'm getting 50mbit installed on tuesday but I only picked the XXL package as it was the only one that had nothing against it in terms of TM, so am I still going to get shaped or not?

Also getting upgraded to 50mb on Tuesday.. whats the upload speed? 2.5Mb?

Cant wait to get the new router, as my one went pop and its cheaper for me to get it all for free, for the upgrade price rather than fork out on a new one.

Yes, ALL packages have P2P/Usenet management as documented on that site.

You just don't have download limits.

The way around usenet is to signup to accounts using SSL connections, I get 5.8Mbps download during managed times using SSL connections.

I've always run SSL, but isn't port 563 throttled as well?

/edit ahhh jus tbeen reading I need to switch to 443, ah well, there goes giganews accelerator :(

My workmate has just received a Cease & Desist letter from VM because he's downloaded over 350 gig in a month between 9am and 9pm.
Anybody else received one?

Seems they now traffic shape port 563.

This is a **** take!

I am on the verge of ringing this piece of **** company up and cancelling their crap service.

Nice little squabble at that thread lol.

Bottom line, regardless of what they tell you, and wha they admit to, VM are traffic monitoring using deep packet inspection and are traffic shaping particular types of user, namely those using torrents or the newsgroups, FACT.

Get yourself an account with one of the newsgroups providers that has SSL connection options and use that, chances are you'll see a massive increase in speed, immediately
