Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

So the current 100mb will be 120mb and reduced to the same price as the current 50mb.

So unless the 50mb connection gets a price reduction too, I might as well upgrade to 100 and get 120mb for the same cost with a bonus 12mb up too.

This is what I'm thinking, surly there must be a price reduction though for us on 50mb.

50mbit and 100mbit are both going to be 120mbit based on this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/16/virgin_media_email_error/

In the meantime, as part of our double speed programme we are delighted to confirm that 50Mb customers will actually be upgraded to 120Mb, meaning even more Virgin Media customers will be able to take advantage of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK."

Some 50Mb/s customers will see an initial rise to 100Mb/s before moving up to the full whack 120Mb/s, the telco spokespersons added

Well looks like the VM engineer I spoke to at the petrol station was right. I just phoned up to upgrade to 50Mb from 30 and I asked multiple times in various ways and the guy went away twice to confirm, my area is being double speed upgraded at the end of Feb this year, I confirmed once again that at the end of Fed I’ll be on 100Mb and paying current 50Mb price and he confirmed this once again.

The doublespeed website states my area is due the upgrade October onwards…

Yea... I'd take what he said with a pinch of salt if I were you.

VM's website says October.

2 separate people from VM on 2 different days multiple times say the same earlier date/time frame.

Hmm let me see.

Well put it this way, I've had about 4 different dates from 4 different people on 4 different days... and my connection still isn't fixed :)

If you get it then that's awesome and also doesn't sat much about the website.

I'm strongly considering moving to VM and getting their 50Mb package. Is there any sort of site that can give you an estimation of the speed you'll get? I know basically nothing about VM and how the speed is altered (like the way ADSL speed drops off the further you are from the exchange). Do they implement traffic shaping/throttling at all on Usenet and torrents on their top tier packages? I've checked on their site and it says that they don't throttle or traffic shape, but it's not clear what it's in reference to.

You get what you pay for. There are no issues with distance etc.

There are usage limits after which you get speed capped - http://www.virginmedia.com/images/tm-table-su-large.jpg

There are several people on here who've had their service for many many years and been very happy with their service. Some areas have problems with over subscription, but the vast majority have no problems.

Anyone else get an email saying about the upgrade, then another to ignore the previous email?

I am confused.

Read the email

They sent the "you're on 100mb and we're making it even faster" email to everybody - including the people that werent actually on 100mb like us (you and I both have 50mb right ?)

Looking forward to 120/12 internet. Wonder if the year was part of their marketing idea :)

Was considering upgrading from 50 to 100 but did not want to be locked into another 12 month agreement (you never know what might happen with their quality).

How i read the page where it tells you when you upgrade........is 50meg customers get speed increase to 100 meg........and folks currently on 100meg get a reduction in payments in line with current 50 meg customers.......so the folks on 100meg dont automaticly go onto 120meg........

Important information

Cabled areas only. Fastest broadband download speeds widely available to consumers according to 2009 - 2011 Ofcom reports. 100Mb customers will see price-cut instead of speed doubling.

and also theres this:

If you have our up to 100Mb connection, you've already got the fastest widely available broadband in the UK. So we'll be taking a bit off your monthly bill, instead. And as an extra thank you, we'll be boosting your speeds up to 120Mb. Your upgrades start this summer. We'll be in touch to let you know.

100Mb customers get 120Mb, 50Mb customers get upgraded to 100 THEN soon after get 120 too. The top tier will be 120 and as such makes sense tod rop price for current 100 to 50 prices.

Easy enough to understand.

Im struggling what to use my 100mb connection for or even the 10 up? Does anyone have good legitimate uses for it ? After pulling down a few tbs of various media etc im now wondering what to do.
