Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

If I understand it correctly...

50 is getting upgraded to 100.
100 is being upgraded to 120 and will end up paying the current 50Mb tariff.

This would seem to mean that either 50Mb users will receive a discount on what they are currently paying, or current 100Mb users will receive 120Mb for the same monthly cost as current 50Mb users, like some kind of loyalty/first adopters bonus? The latter sounds unlikely though?
Nope

50mb is being upgraded to 120mb, however initially it will be upgraded to 100mb with the extra 20mb in the following couple of months.

They are combining all the packages.

20&30mb will be combined into the 60mb service
And 50&100 will be combined into the 120mb service.
Going back to how it use to be with just a few services M, L and Xl.

put simply

yes they shape p2p traffic and newsgroups on all packages. and you only have unlimited download limits on the 50mb and 100 mb packages at the moment

top tip for you, and anybody else using newsgroups through virginmedia - use the SSL port 419 rather than 563 to avoid the traffic management, that is if your provider allows for it.

I've done this since the capping of news servers began with VM and it's been flawless :D

Ah right, fair enough. :)

Guess that means 120Mb is going to become throttled like the slower services. :(

I wish they would put the fibre optic cables in more areas.

Also increase the upload speed, I would happily trade a few MB of download for upload.

When I was a customer in a house I got high speeds and now I moved into my flat all they will give me is 4.5MB through this rusty phone line at the same price I got 20MB for.

I do like Virgin Media but it needs work..

Does a new install of Virgin Media fibre - 30mb package, have a ten day testing period where the network works out your best speed, much like ADSL does?

Also, does anyone know, with reference to the Virgin Media download/upload limits before they throttle your connection, are the limits based on a cumulative monthly limit or is it a daily limit? And if they do throttle you, is the 75% speed reduction just for that day, or is the reduction until your next billing cycle/end of month?

Thanks :)

The limit is a daily limit which lasts for 5 hours. Here's the traffic management from VM, However this is out of date. It still shows two 10Mb services but there is only one. (anyone on the 10Mb wants to look at the 10Mb L section)

EDIT:
It still shows the old upload speeds, so im not sure how accurate that is... i know the 10Mb gets capped at 1.5GB after 4pm, and the 20Mb 3.5GB after 4pm.

I have had 50mb in Dudley area for about 4 months and it's been faultless.

I am seriously concerned on what this extra demand will do on the network considering the amount of issues I hear about.

I also hope that my tariffs remain the same, with no throttling (down and up) and the connection is stable

Doubling everyone's speed is a pretty big job - we've got over 4 million Virgin Media customers who will receive double speeds, but rest assured, my fittest, fastest engineers will be in your area between October and June 2013 and going as fast as they can.

I tried upgrading our account online the other day from L to XL.

It said they couldn't give me a price online because everyone's packages are different and that to get a quote I would have to go through the procedure and they would then get in touch...

The first page of the form said there would be a free upgrade to the SuperHub router — on the next page it then said before they could give me a quote I would have to pay £30 for the upgrade and £75 for the SuperHub, all before they would even let me know how it would affect my monthly bill!

Seems a bit odd. I can only assume there's been an error on the website about the SuperHub and that if I phone them they will be able to sort it out for me.

Only problem is, it's my girlfriends account so they won't talk to me. <sigh>

Going to have to persuade the Mrs. to get on the phone. :p
