Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

Hmmm that should mean that my exchange should have gone from 20mb to 60mb. Not heard or seen any performance change. Mind you I haven't been online at home for a while.

Does one need a new hub for 60mb as I am using quite an old router they provided when I signed up for 20mb.

Mine definitely is not upgraded yet but it seems like the upload has finally gone from 0.5m to 2.0m FINALLY

Looking through my old emails yesterday and found one from VM telling me my upload had been upgraded from 1.5mb to 5mb... all I had to do was reset my router. Was about a month old, although I'm lucky I saw it all I suppose.

Seems my area will be one of the last in the UK to get the 100mb upgrade, not long to wait now though. :)

Strangley enough mine has been dropping out and the modem rebooting a lot this past week, often 6-7 times a day the modem reboots, and the speeds are shocking, im starting to wonder if they are trying to push 100mb through my 50mb modem...silly if they are.

Quick question about what package to get. We may be moving house, in which case I won't renew my VM contract. If however we don't I will do, as the service here is great.

I'm currently on 30MbXL (upgraded to 60Mb by the end of March), but ideally want a package without any download limits at all (eg I downloaded ME3 over Origin and that capped my connection about 75% of the way through!), but I don't need the super super headline speeds of 120Mb, I guess my only option would be to upgrade to the 50Mb[100Mb] package?

Probably.

Although assuming VM may scale up the STM along with the speed increases, so it might be a 1GB cap between 4pm - 9pm, reducing down to 15mbps if you're on 60mbps. Could you live with that? Of course they might not scale the STM up.

Also, the superhub modem/router has a built in activity monitor that tracks your total upload and download bandwidth. You could reset it in the before a big download to get an idea of when you're going to hit the cap.

Not sure which thread to post this in...so I'll try both :p.

I have the Virgin Media Cable Modem and seperate Dlink 615 Router that they stopped shipping a year ago(??). Will this work with the 100Mb service, or will I be forced to upgrade to a Superhub? The only reason I ask is because I can get the upgrade without getting tied into a contract again (which is key at the moment).

Ive been on the phone to them this morning, to get a new superhub sent out and the person i spoke to (english yay!) said that you can use the DIR 615 with the superhub (in modem mode) and it will work with the 100mb apparently, im not 100% sure but its gotta be better than the superfailhub for the wireless part.

And to your original question the old modem wont take 100mb.

Bugger. That means a new contract, unless...I can buy a superhub off the 'bay without issue surely? Just to verify is the 100Mb superhub the VMDG480?

Could you use both the SH and the DIR615 as a wireless "booster" (we own a Victorian house with mega thick walls)? Or Vice Versa, I'd rather use the Dlink as my router.

Also (might as well ask whilst I'm at it :p) - I would quite like to move the modem to be under the stairs. Can I extend the cable (from the wall socket) myself, or would that lead to a degradation in service?

Not sure about the superhub purchase, as you need to ring them to activate it or something.

Yeah there are loads of superhubs on ebay.

So I guess my options are Hub from Virgin for £75 to avoid a new 18 month contract, or aforementioned contract. Hmmm.

You can't buy the SH you buy the use of it..yeh I know silly.
And in the VMs T&C if you get hardware other then from a fault you are in a 12 month contract.

Best thing for you to do is call and say you have problems with your modem from time to time
the tech will come out and you will get a SH for free(ask when you call to make sure) Job done :)

Well flashing to dd-wrt was easy enough.

Am I imagining that my network is faster? And is 144Mbps decent for the wireless? A hell of a lot more configuration options than the default D-Link interface! Only seeming to get 40% signal quality on some devices mind you; Thick walls :(.
