Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

Im on 20mb at the moment, sorta looking forward to 60mb assuming the gear they supply works

This means ill get bullied by VM into using the super **** hub.

They offered me a free upgrade to 30mb last year. sent me the hub, i hooked it up, it was totally incompatible with my home network so much that i went postal and booted it across the living room

Phoned them up and made them put me back on 20mb and send me out a 20mb modem.

I hope the hub aint as **** as it used to be....
Ive heard rumours that there is a new "modem only" mode for the hub.

If so i hope that works flawlessly like my current standalone cable modem.

Yeah seems cool the speed increase but will the network capacity increase too to cope with the new speeds because lets face it a lot of people have trouble with packet loss and crap speeds as you can see with the up to 50mb thread here. If they do which i think they will as they state they will be laying 186km of cable as well then cool (assuming cable is what was needed as im not sure if its stuff in cabinet or cable etc).

Upload speed will be welcomed as well. Is this new new upload speed or the new upload speed just applied to everyone that some of us already have i.e im on 30mb down and 3mb up will my 3mb be the same or will it be 5mb who knows.

Btw the table above shows for those with the old upload speed limits. Here is the more up to date one.

Yes the new modem mode FW they released is a god send, just couple it with a decent router and you are sorted really. Apart from the few weeks of issues, I'm glad I went with it for the extra 10Mb.

Woop di fricking woo! Virgin are increasing speeds big deal... why don't they increase the amount of people who can actually use their service instead of selected areas then they would have more money coming in to upgrade further still.

had good service and net connection from these guys for ages. Constantly on the net gaming, working and stuff and have been since they were telewest! However think I may be a lucky one know a lot of mates and family who haven't had as good a service...but for me is good!!

Fix the jitter/congestion/packetloss/lag and I'd consider giving you another go, Virgin.

But obviously 'headline' speeds are the most important thing.

Pathetic.

Does anyone know what the maximum throughput of the Ambit modems are? I know on 50Mb users get the superhub to cope with the extra speed just wondering if my modem will hinder me.

Ha!

That will be a waste of time...I have 100mb and am lucky to get 50mb most of the time. Besides if 50mb is going to 100mb and 100mb is going 120mb then I am downgrading back to 50mb.

Wait and see what they do with throttling policies.

And it will sort out issues for many people. There's still going to be far more throughput. But it's still better getting 20% of 60mb than 20% of 20,b, in the massively over scubscribed areas.

But who not in over subscribed area, so 100mb connection here we come. I bet it'll still be ages though. Need that checker.

That will do me just fine.

My internal networking gear consists of:-
2x wrt54g - DDWRT
1x wrt54gl - DDWRT
1x SLM2005

Which is more than enough for:-
Bravia Smart TV
Uber Rig Pc
Laptop
Android phones
Android tablet
Xbox360
Xbox
2TB Nas

My only concern now is...... the VM Hub is fkin ugly and massive.
Gonna have to hide it out of sight.

Because they are barely out of debt from doing that before over ten years ago? With BT Infinity being rolled out, I don't see them suddenly expanding the network anytime soon.

Vm have always gave me good service, back when they were ntl and indeed when they were cabletel, here in belfast the service was always good.
I stayed on 20 to avoid the excrement hub, but looks like i will have to move to it to avoid the ikkle modem i use now failing.

As long as i can set it to modem only mode i will be happy enough, just swap it in and out with my currentbsetup, keep my own excellent router in place.

To answer a couple of questions questions they are spending £120m on network upgrades

And if your area is suffering from over utilisation I wouldn't expect the speed increase until after the resegmentation has been completed so I wouldn't worry about it too much :)
