Vista Check List??

I really don't remember all this MS hate when XP came out. What's changed? Vista is just the next version of windows, why do people think MS is evil for bringing out new versions of it's software?

It’s pretty pathetic isn’t it.

you must have missed the multiple lawsuits against Microsoft in the last 5 years including the EU commision which ruled that Microsoft was unfairly restricting rival systems, and the $600 Million fine. There is a fair reason why they're hated.

Are any of those related to Vista?

Anyway I know that one of those was about bundling media player with Windows and I think it's unfair that MS lost that case.

but XP isn't loaded with fancy 3D GUIs and things that use big chunks of memory when they aren't needed.

I bet it's full of all kinds of DRM crap... not to mention it's going to totally hog system resources with its fancy interface.
Oh come off it. The "fancy interface" is just taking advantage of the power of modern PCs and if you don't want it you can turn it off.

yes, including a new lawsuit filed by Symantec just today "Symantec filed a lawsuit in Seattle today alleging Microsoft committed a host of business misdeeds, including misappropriating trade secrets and violating a contract that covered code used in part of the coming Windows Vista operating system."
Just this lawsuit alone could delay Vista.
You may have thought it was unfair, but the EU didn't.

You don't have to use the new Aero GUI if you don't want to. Anyway the whole point of the new GUI is to improve responsiveness because it makes use of the processing power the GPU has instead of relying on the CPU for everything. I don't understand why it would take up so much more memory? Especially considering some of that will be held in graphics memory leaving more system RAM free. But what happens when you want to play a game? Well I'm sure it'll be unloaded from memory when playing games.

I agree with that... its just taking advantage of what you have now... the reason that apple has gotten there first is that they make the computers to cope with the software (OS) requirements

i think im going to move to Apple computers soon. cant stand all this Vista business, starting to annoy me and forcing people to upgrade to play games.
time to save up for macbook now.
As far as I'm aware Apple also bring out updates to their OS, and more frequently than MS?

iirc Apple tend to do smaller upgrades though, but still, they aren't free unless they changed anything.

There was a lot of hate for XP at the time. Loads of people stuck with 2000 because it was "less bloated"

The difference between XP and Vista though is that XP was delivered on-schedule and Vista has been delayed time after time. These delays have eroded people's confidence in the product and have subsequently made Microsoft delay it even further to make sure it is as bug free and reliable as is possible on launch day.

When Vista was first on the drawing board at Microsoft, security was very much a non-concern. But then CodeRed, Blaster and Slammer struck and it's hard to put into words the absolute fundamental shift these events instilled upon the company. Everything in the Windows Product Group was put on hold, and I mean everything. That gave rise to XP Service Pack 2. Then Vista development continued but at a subdued pace because deep down the programmers knew there were some massive flaws that simply had to be fixed if the company was going to stay secure. It didn't take long for those concerns to reach the management and this is when the most popular feature of Vista, "WinFS", was debundled from the product. Vista had just lost one of its key cornerstones, only to be replaced with a new mostly unpublicised (at the time) cornerstone called "security". This led to the Internet Explorer team being reformed and IE7 will prove to be the most secure web browser ever (yes even more secure than Firefox and Opera). It also led to any new Vista code being audited, to the Visual C++ compiler team adding built-in security functions, to new big security features being developed for Vista (UAP, User Account Protection a.k.a. least-user privilege).

Well from what I remember there was quite a bit of "hate" when Windows XP came out due to the "Fisher Price" theme. Many users still turn off the theme service to allow their machine to run faster so I expect it to be the same with Vista.

I agree with that, as I'd have thought the majority of people buying PCs are not going to be using them as hardcore gaming machines, more for general use and perhaps media capabilities. People are buying new PCs for these tasks which probably can be done on systems half with half the power fine, so why not use that power which is being wasted most of the time. Plus, just turn the prettiness off, you have good old Windows classic style again, hurrah.

From the E3 show the other week, it looks like MS are concentrating a lot more on gaming for Vista, apparently anway, so it will link a lot more closely with their Xbox Live gaming servicies and apparently allow it to be a lot more simple to install and run games on the system. I'll have to see it to believe it, but I'm interested in how it's going to interact etc.
