VISTA is on its way!!

If you buy the retail version, do you get the 32-bit and 64-bit versions together? There are still a lot of us with 32-bit CPUs out there.
Yeah. The reason OEM is locked to 32 or 64-bit is because OEMs are sold with PCs and therefore are meant to be locked down to that PC for life. A switch between a 32 and 64-bit processor is pretty damn significant and in Microsoft's eyes is considered a major hardware change.

I know it's a pain but IMO you aren't going to be getting the full Vista experience on 32-bit anyway.

From reading the retail licence I understand it as it comes with both versions and you can use both but only one at a time.

those prices are tempting if UEA doesnt upgrade its academic license to vista...or they only get basic (they better not lol)

Windows Vista will become available at some point via MSDNAA, most likely
early in the new year although a date has not yet been confirmed.

I can't imagine it being basic as we had XP Pro on there before :)

Will the 32-bit version be obsolete in a year or two? Is Microsoft moving towards 64-bit in a big way? I find it all a bit confusing to be honest.

very nice to, want to see how much the retail prices are before i place my order. gona go for ultimate and be done with it. full retail if the price allows!

Hi there

The retail are 2x-3x more expensive than the OEM. However with the Retail you do get both 32-Bit & 64-Bit version but can only choose one I think. The retail as mentioned here does allow hardware changes without issue. So if you change your motherboard every month then Retail is recommended or an upgrade.

So upgrades and retails will go live shortly. :)

If you can put up with some 64-bit driver headaches for a month or two then I'd definately pick up 64-bit. I'm not sure on the timeframe but Microsoft has expressed publicly its intention to remove 32-bit variations of Windows entirely in the future. Longhorn Server and Exchange VNext for example will be 64-bit only.

I'd imagine Fiji (and of course Vienna) will be 64-bit only as well.

The 32-bit version of Vista has some extra backward compatibility and much less security features.

Great prices on vista, this is actually cheaper than some upgrade routes you can take so well done ocuk on the price.

Thanks gibo will be intresting to see. what everyone has to decide is if the OEM will infact be able to upgrade as often as most do on here, be it GFX, hardrives CPU ect. as i understand it microsoft is going to be a lot more strict when it comes to re activating OEM's with serious upgrade's. XP you can get away with a re activation quite easily but microsoft know this and have tighter policy end license agreement with the Vista OEM's. it would be intresting to find out exactly what microsoft will allow before deciding what to buy, retail or OEM version's

Hi there

In fact Retail pricing is not so bad on Basic edition its only the higher-end editions where the extra premium cost more. The retail versions will be live in approx 5-10mins, I think you will be happy with the prices. :)

What will i need with an E6300, 64bit?

And also whats the difference between home basic and premium.

Do u think i should wait to order on jan 31st and get one of these? or just get xp with my new system now? Will games and programs like firefox work with vista?

Is it documented anywhere the exact difference between OEM and retail licence versions?

Is that a hint to update the sticky? ;):p

I think I'll spend some time documenting all the questions and answers brought up by this thread.

Thanks, but in real terms the only advantage I can see of Ultimate over Premium is the BitLocker thingy and its ability to detect hardware problems. Unless there's anything else, I'll go for Premium.

and remote desktop! I couldn't live without that, so I will be getting Ultimate Edition :)

The main difference is that basic doesn't have the aero interface. It doesn't have media centre either.

Hi there

Games will work fine!
Firefox I am unsure but Firefox will no doubt release an updated version in time for Vista. :)
