Vista only for Halo 2!

IMO Halo1 on the was pure crap. Very repetitive/jaded gameplay & mediocre gfx.

It was originally designed as a 3DFX Voodoo5 launch title then whilst 3DFX were having issues with the V5 Microsoft came along and bought Bungie so the PC version got initially canned then about 3 years too late MS decided to do a port which was badly dated and unimpressive for the PC. If you look @ a Voodoo5 retail box Halo was all over it and this was back in 2000!

Cannot imagine Halo2 will be anything special for the PC especially when by the time it is released @ xmas (no doubt heavily advertised all over the place) the PC will hopefully have had more mature DX9 gfx generation of FPS titles .

So Halo 2 runs on DX8 hardware on the Xbox (btw you can buy a new Xbox and Halo 2 for just under £90) but needs DX10 to run on Windows? What a load of crap. (which is what Halo 2 is too incidentally.)

People are always "anti-Microsoft's new OS". It seems to happen every time. It happened with XP, 2000, 98 and 95. People always think what they have right now is the best it can possibly be and that it can't get any better! The truth couldn't be further from that.

There's much more to Vista than a fancy GUI. The security that you seem to think is good in XP is "great" in Vista. No really, Vista security returns to the days when NT was secure by design - a Unix like approach. There's also the new HiDef audio stack which lets you control volume on a per application basis. Parental Controls... New networking stack with proper interfaces for third parties to interface their firewall software with (increased stability)... Desktop Search... RSS integration to the core of the OS... I could go on but I'd just be repeating Winsupersite.

Even if you do convert to a Mac (which will cost more than to just upgrade to Vista with new hardware anyway)... you'll be back.

I don't think that, but I do think XP is great and it does what I need it to do :)

None of those things get me excited personally. In fact I'm dreading that the GUI will be as horrid and unusable as it is in the current betas. Luckily MS will be supporting XP for several years yet so I may just hold out till the next release, and give 'XP Millenium Edition' a miss ;)

iirc it was actually intended for the Apple Mac first ;)

However MS bought Bungie up and changed everything :)

Actually mate I followed it's design from the start and it was intended for PC long before MS bought them.

I don't understand how you can prefer apple computers without ever having used one.

The only reason there are less virus's and spyware us because the user base of Windows XP is so much higher. If you're a virues writer you want maximum exposure. You want the virus to spread as much as possible. Therefore you code a virus to infiltrate the OS with the largest user base.

I sincerely hope it is the right choice for you. :)

Great post :)

Er, no! My understanding was that DX10 was not just going to be for Vista but for XP as well.?

Could be wrong tho. Until we actually get to the point of release, its all talk from the 666 Geek.

Couldn't really give a toss-

Halo 2 will be old hat and nothing to shout about!
I always upgrade to the latest OS anyway!
Why do some people fight change and progress...I still know people who only use Windows 98!

As I have a dual core 64 bit CPU I welcome an OS designed to utilize new technology and am personally looking forward to using VISTA. Tweaking learning and changing is what this interest in high end PC's is all about isn't it?

HALO2 Q and A - From Megagames

"
Bungie has published a Q&A regarding the Halo 2 PC version and Windows Vista which provides very little new information and in most cases just states that no announcements have yet been made. The Q&A seems to serve more as a way of getting most questions out there, rather than addressing any of them or offering any insight as to the reasoning behind the Vista only selection. It is certain that many gamers will have DMR on their lips but we should allow MS the time to offer further details on Halo 2 PC.

Why has it taken so long to port Halo 2 to Windows Vista?

Bungie Studios and Microsoft are committed to delivering and creating the highest quality experience of Halo 2 on the Windows Vista platform. As such, the development of Halo 2 for Windows Vista coincides with the development of the Windows Vista platform itself in order to ensure the title's uncompromised quality.

Why are you releasing Halo 2 for Windows Vista only?

As Bungie Studios and Microsoft are dedicated to delivering a top quality translation of Halo 2 for the PC, their efforts require the use of the best available technological platform for Windows games. Windows Vista will help bring clarity to our customers and help them get more out of their personal computing experience, allowing them to focus on what matters most to them.

Why is Halo 2 for Windows Vista not backwards compatible?

To deliver an optimal gameplay experience, Windows Vista will provide a great platform on which to bring to Halo 2. Microsoft and Bungie Studios will provide additional information at a later date.

Is the release of Halo 2 for Windows Vista just a way to force consumers to purchase the new operating system?

Absolutely not. Bungie Studios and Microsoft's steadfast commitment to quality determined that the Windows Vista platform would provide the best possible version of Halo 2 for the Windows PC. We will provide you with more details in the future.

Why isn't Bungie Studios doing this conversion themselves?

Bungie Studios is deeply involved in the development of Halo 2 for Windows Vista. An internal Microsoft Game Studios team is working closely with Bungie Studios to develop the title.

Is Bungie's lack of involvement in the port of Halo 2 for Windows Vista due to their work on Halo 3?

Although Bungie Studios' primary focus lies elsewhere, it is important to note that they are involved in the creation of Halo 2 for Windows Vista. They are working closely with an internal Microsoft Game Studios team.

They really do insult our intelligence by saying that Halo 2 needs Vista and couldn't be made to run on XP. It runs on a Windows 2000 kernel and DX8 graphics card alright in the Xbox

The security that you seem to think is good in XP is "great" in Vista.

Would that be the security model where you can only install Microsoft-certified applications? It's great if you're not computer-literate because it stops malicious software, but it's only going to be a bad thing for experienced users and developers of open source/freeware.

Some of the other features do look good though.

As for Halo 2, who really cares? I'm sure that 99% of the people who want to play it have already done so on the Xbox. It was one of the better FPS games on the Xbox, but by PC standards (especially by the time Vista is released) it's a very mediocre game.

Can't believe this News!!!.. I have been waiting for AGES for this game, seriously can't believe Micro$oft has decided to do this. It's a shame, as I sure won't be upgrading to Vista, especially after what XP was like when it was first released!... Plus the fact that it states its 'power hungry'.. So does that mean older machines will fail to keep up!?

..Glad I got my 360, guess I'll stick to that for gaming. Looking forward to Halo3 now.!

Micro$oft strikes again!.. and a blatant move to get people upgrading to a much more bloated (and locked down, no doubt!) version of Windows!.. *IMO

;)

Can't wait to buy a new monitor for vist as well.

*** hi def video is tied into the drm which also includes the monitor which must have a hdmi socket. If not you get a low res version. Whether this is for games as well remains to be seen.

MS just purley desperate to have a reason for people to upgrade to windows DRM edition.

Thats not down to Microsoft though. The only reason Vista is implementing HDCP is because the entertainment industry says it has to otherwise you wouldn't be allowed to watch the new HD films on your PC anyway.

Also you don't have to have a monitor with an HDMI socket. It's an HDCP compliant DVI port or HDMI port.

This is the one thing you can't blame MS for at all to be honest. :)

If you look at OS X, its much better looking than XP nad Vista IMHO, and yet doesnt require someone wanting to write and EMail to get a new graphics card theyll never use.
I'd hardly call, say, an fx5200 'new'.

We have a PC at home bought around 3 years ago. 2.4Ghz, fx5200. It'll probably need a little more RAM, but I would expect Vista to run fine on it.

Some MS Videos on Channel9 say they've seen elements of Vista outperform XP on the same hardware.

I don't really see why everyone's against Vista using resources. If computers have incredible processing power and state of the art graphics processing and bucket loads of memory - why not make use of it to improve the user experience?

Perhaps a slight exaggeration? ;) I know you miss the Up button... I hope they re-add it too. But for now we have to use the breadcrumbs in the address bar.

Wakey wakey... HDCP/HDMI is being pushed by the RIAA and MPAA. It has nothing to do with Microsoft or Vista or Games. Microsoft were forced to implement it so their customers would be able to play HiDef content.

Current Microsoft products already have DRM. But the problem is that most people seem to think DRM is evil and prevents them using the PC how they want to. The reality is very different. DRM is really only used by corporates or governments so they can keep close ties on documents/data. Outlook 2003 for example allows you to set an expiry date on an e-mail. A very important feature for government security agencies.

I'm not too bothered. I will be upgrading to Vista as soon as it's available, as it looks like it will be another decent OS. Lets face it, we will all be using it in a couple of years time anyway ;)
Hopefully they will add extra content etc to Halo 2, but i think it will flop on the pc, same as Halo. There will be bigger and better FPS out there by the time its released, its been too long as most people who really want it, will have it on XBOX.

Too true m8! Personally, i would love to have lots of fancy graphics animations, fades etc within an OS and yes, just because it looks cool. If it takes and extra 1-2 secs to do something, im fine with it :) I used to be a power user, wanting everything to run as fast as possible, minimum installs etc, overclocking to the maximum. Now i just want everything to work, work quietly and look cool.

Resources are there to be used (to an extent), otherwise why do we pay all this money for good hardware :D
