also to increase your hard drive performance , right click on your hard drive in my computer , and disable , index your drive for faster searches , as this will slow your comp down a lot to , my games ar loading in half the time !
But now the anywhere search won't work, which is one of the big bonuses in Vista.

Indexing only takes a few hours, and should only run in the background when nothing else is going on.

Wireless and Load Times

Just though I'd mention this as it it caught me out. If you don't normally broadcast your SSID then you may notice Vista has trouble connecting. In the Wireless Network property, ensure you have checked the Connect even if the network is not broadcasting option. May seem obvious now but caught me out.

Anyway, I've not had many issues with Vista but one weird one is during boot-up on my Dell PC. It shows he progress indicator, then the screen goes blank, the monitor then goes into standby because it's obviously not receiving a signal, then about 20-30 seconds later, it comes back to life and continues after that.

Has anybody else had this? Any ideas on the cause/fix?

Given it doesn't happen to everyone, it'll just be some random driver issue for a specific piece of hardware/hardware combination on your PC.

What video driver are you guys using, ive got a nvidia 7800gs+ AGP. On my dual monitor setup the second monitors desktop is very glitchy :(

Np a fresh driver install and all is fine..:)

I do have 1 question though, ive installed company of heroes but it refuses to start as im missing a direct x9 dll?? Vista has direct x 10 right, so do i have to install 9 over the top for my games to work??

Please help

I've given Vista a go and think it's alright but wouldn't change from XP just yet so wondering what's the easiest way to delete it, it's installed on another hard drive but I don't want to format the drive as it has other things I need in it, shall I just delete all the folders that weren't there before?

No idea how to uninstall sorry, ill be doing a full format tomorrow and reinstalling XP. Vista is very nice but it just eats way to much of my system for me to be completly happy. My HD has never thrashed so hard in it life and ive got 2GB of ram im thinking that it needs another 2GB before i will get and speed back in my transfers.

Turning Aero off sped things up no end btw :)

I've got 1Gb RAM and don't experience any slowdowns or thrashing - so it's probably something else (indexing?). There's no way on earth it would need 4Gb(!)

If anything, it's quicker on my laptop than XP - probably due to the better memory management (Physical Memory Free: 1Mb!).

Delete whatever you don't want. Get rid of the Vista bootloader by running fixboot/fixmbr from the XP recovery console.

XP says I don't have permission to delete anything
Right click all concerned, Sharing & Security.

Take ownership of it all, should be slightly more forthcoming after that.

Quick one by me, I have a dual boot, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

On my boot menu I have:

Windows XP
Windows Vista

Is there a way I can default XP to boot instead of Vista?

I would have thought the top one had priority, but I guess not.

Yeah head for (In Vista that is, at least maybe an option in XP) "My computer" right click "properties" and click on "advanced" tab "Start up and recovery" one of the pull down boxes in Vista gives you option which one to boot from first up near the top.

Yeah, I did that in XP and says XP is default.

Ill take a look in Vista, is it the same location?

How are you burning with RC1, Nero doesn't work, Imgburn does, each time I try to burn using Windows, it won't take my DVD-RW's?

How about any audio drivers for my nforce2?
No problems here with Roxio Creator 8 and CloneDVD 2. I am using Verbatim x16 DVD -R's :)

Prob cause Vista is such an upgrade doing it in Vista would be the option as it takes over anyway, in the pre boot stage. Yes a very similar option in Vista Mate

And doing it in Vista will change boot options if its RC1 anyway worked a charm for me.

Glad to be of help.... Being a vet now of Vista (lmao) had it three weeks, I have a had a lot of pitfall'[s with it recently since RC1 and learned plenty, lol.....

lots of problems installing on mine, i tried putting on a spare hdd and installing straight from CD but everytime it got the the scrolling bar after loading files the system would hang and do nothing.

Re-connected my normal drives and ran the CD install from XP which went a lot better choosing my second drive to install Vista, (public RC1 x86) and again when it rebooted it would hang, the next time i rebooted i got to a screen which was black with a mouse cursor in the middle the 'Vista RC1' etc is bottom right corner but then nothing would happen at all, i left it all day like this to see if there was a problem resuming the install (slept for night shift) but the same screen was still displayed, not locked up as i could move mouse, rebooted a few time with no change anf then on the 4th go the install finally resumed... by then i had to leave for work!

i dont believe it, i just got home from my 12 hour night shift and it still has 'finalising instalation' on the screen... and it hasn't crashed.

I hit reset and windows vista uninstalled itself... sigh..

I have a problem of not being able to use the program 'Photoshop cs2', it opens the it say's i have insuficient privledges to use this program.

I'm logged in as the administrator, and it still won't let me use the program anyone got any idea's please???
