VM 20 > 30 meg upgrade

Retentions upgraded me to 30mb, halved the activation fee (I did used to be on 50mb so not sure if this had something to do with it) monthly cost now £30.74.

30mb
Landline with weekend calls
basic TV think it's M package

Well I phoned up and went ahead with it, couldn't be bothered going through retentions. From what the guy said the bill is £1.50 cheaper and you only get the 30mb after you activate the super hub. I just hope it isn't a pile of fail like previous ISP routers.

The £30 is an activation fee, nothing to do with the hub according to them but the fact you have to install and activate the hub yourself seems to imply otherwise.

There must be a way of acquiring this upgrade for free. Might be worth rining up and kicking off that broadband isn't fast enough or working properly.

For an "irate" customer £30 isn't a lot to appease them...

Alternatively I am on friends and family package, might be worth a blag. I'm going to try later and see what happens.

The superhub does NOT support UPnP...I hope you can turn the superhub into just a modem, and have your own wireless / router running.

I expect you can by just using a single cable from the hub to the router. I'd much rather use my WRT320N than this SuperHub, so I'll give it a whirl when it turns up.

I expect by going via retentions you could, maybe call them first and not mention the 30MB upgrade. They might offer it free of charge if you complain about the internet being slow etc.

I spent £120 on my WNDR3700 which works flawlessly and has all the features I want. Can someone confirm for sure that the firewall, DHCP, wireless etc can be disabled on this superhub so I can patch it through to my WNDR as if it was a modem?

You can sort of get it to work a modem. It's a bit of a hack at the moment, there's a rumour that they'll enable a 'modem only' function.

Previously Virgin Broadband users in the UK on Virgin's cable network were supplied with a standard DOCSIS modem and were required to connect their own (or Virgin supplied) router to allow multiple devices to connect at the same time.

Recently Virgin Broadband have changed what they supply and now use the Super Hub (a custom Netgear router) which is wireless capable and supports multiple devices. However some customers still prefer to use their own router instead of the Super Hub especially when wanting to support multiple Xboxes with an Open NAT which (at time of writing) the Superhub does not support.

If you simply connect your own router to the Superhub will will encounter NAT issues even with one Xbox as you are "double NAT'ing" Virgin have hinted that they will in the future release a firmware update for the Superhub to allow you easily turn off its routing functions and make it a very standard modem so you can connect your own router.

Until this time there is a workaround available so that you can correctly connect your own broadband router to the Superhub wth the Superhub acting as a standard modem and handing off all of the work to your second router.

Plug your cable router’s WAN port into any of the LAN ports on the VMDG280.
Plug your PC into any VMDG280 LAN port and access the management page by entering 192.168.0.1 into your web browser
Login to the VMDG280 the username/password details are on a sticker on the side of your hub (more help here)
On the LAN IP page examine the DHCP lease info; you should see your PC and the second router list.
Note the MAC address of the router and add it to the DHCP reservation section and give the second router an IP address of 192.168.0.10. (Use ipconfig /all in a cmd window to find the MAC address of your PC if your not sure which is which)
Now go to the DMZ host page on the VMDG280 and enter the same IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.10). This means that the VMDG280 will pass all traffic to the second router without any checks or filters
Additional Suggestion:- At this stage it would also be wise to turn off the VMDG280 wireless functionality and firewall and let your second router provide this for you
Turn off the second router and back on again, plug your PC into the second router, login to the second router and set the router’s WAN setup for "Does your Internet connection require a login" to NO, this may also be known as Internet Connection type - "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" (it varies from router to router) and then you should see the WAN or internet as 192.168.0.10
Connect any remaining devices to the second router as the Virgin Hub is now being used as a basic modem only
The changes are now complete

The instructions above will work for the VMDG280 and VMDG480

Also, I've just upgraded mine to 30MB.... but I already had a Superhub (since my modem died last week) and the stupid lady insisted I needed a new Superhub since it enables the 30Mb.... Bleh,

Thanks for the superhub info above!

I just spoke to a VM rep on the phone and was told the £30 fee to upgrade to the 30MB service is not removable, it is only free on the 50MB service at £35 a month so I just thought I'd rather save £1.50 a month and have 30MB - Superhub box is due on Friday.

you do have to phone them up and activate I was told too. Is the upload speed 1MB then? The phone woman seemed to think it was 768K which is what my 20MB is at the moment.... She also said it could be more depending on if my local exchange had been upgraded and the cables going down the road etc.

Clearly ...

Oops, I apologise for my stupidity.

They quite often 'close ranks' on this kind of thing and flat out deny discounts.

It's worth doing this as £30 soon works itself out over the reduced bill, not to mention the fast speeds and wireless box.
