I will personally turn muslim and then go blow it up should it be built.

Imagine if it was Northern Ireland?? There would be riots.

I assume working muslims pay tax aswell....but to spend £100m on a mosque is daft....isnt it the upkeep of the church i pay for when you put money in the things at mass?

thought that was so the clergy could go get drunk for free :p

wouldnt know but id assume it would contribute

I don't think any taxpayer's money should be spent on a religious building, hospitals, transport etc. is where it should be going.

indeed, should be spent on items that dont discriminate against sections of the tax paying community. although i can now picture someone daft protesting against a new hospital rofl

What an absolutely preposterous idea.

When Abu Izzadeen, the firebrand Islamist militant, berated John Reid last week for "daring" to visit a Muslim area, the Home Secretary bridled, as did many others, at his suggestion that part of London was off limits for a British minister of the Crown.
Shouldn't this guy be told off for promoting racial hatred or something?

Grr I hate them, they are ******* ugly and stick out like a sore thumb, what about a British design, they suit them back in the middle east but not in the UK.

Can't they just take over one of the local churches instead? Would save money and make use of the building as a place of worship again.

Whilst I am totally against the idea of a "super-mosque", the articles give the impression that it won't be the tax payer funding it (not the whole amount anyway):

Now consider the east London mosque. Its backers are the Tablighi Jamaat, a missionary organisation that says it is non-political and peaceful. Yet a senior FBI anti-terrorism official has called it a recruiting ground for al-Qa'eda, and the French secret services described it as "an antechamber for fundamentalism". Its current European headquarters are in Dewsbury, home town of Mohammed Siddique Khan, leader of the July 7 suicide bombers, who attended the local mosque. Much of the funding for the Markaz, which will cost about £100 million, is expected to come from Saudi Arabia.

This will inevitably lead to more debate about promoting racial hatred etc, but hopefully it won't get the go-ahead anyway :)

I voted in favour of building the mosque, tbh its about time we muslims had a decent place to pray..dont like being over-crowded at my local one...kind of a bummer when your squashed right in:(.

I have no issues about my taxes being used to build one, just like i have no issues about my taxes being paid for an illegal war;).

Well you wouldn't have any issues, you're going to be using it. £99 million of it will be paid by people not using the thing.

P.S Why not build a giant Millennium Falcom for the Jedi believers? ;)
