Vsync and Games

Im not quite sure that a 120hz monitor would fix the problem.. cant the human eye only see around 60fps and anymore isn't noticeable.. I'd be happy to try it but I dont need a new monitor just yet :P

Rainagul.. lemme try and explain, in an FPS when you aim/turn around and then stop aiming/turning that there is almost a fraction where it feels like its still moving, I guess catching up to where you are. Where as with vsync off.. when you stop, it stops that instant with no delay.

Mouse smoothing is almost 10x as bad as vsync for me, almost feels like when you run along some ice in a game and you stop pressing forward but you continue to move. Obviously thats an over exaggeration as you probably dont go that far but it just doesn't feel as responsive. As a result.. mouse smoothing always has to be off or I go into an ALL CAPS RAGE.

I think its a responsiveness issue that I've noticed.. and I've noticed it on any PC I've played on that it has to be set to off.

"can't the human eye only see around 60fps"

That's just a myth.

I know exactly what you mean about the responsiveness, you should give triple buffering a go to see if it makes any difference.

It's funny how tearing occurs when the game is running really well but actually looks like crap because of it. V-Sync definately causes lag for me, need to invest in a better monitor :(

I never use vsync, don't notice tearing except the odd huge one in some scenes that attract it.

It's known to and does cause mouse lag and I hate that FAAAR more than I hate/notice tearing.

Can't stand tearing, V-Sync is a must for me. Happy to perform slightly worse rather than the game looking like it's being played on faulty hardware.

I have v-sync disabled by default, only enable it in games that:

a) aren't tearing like hell 90% of the time
b) the responsiveness isn't that important
c) don't suffer from major performance loss by using it

To give examples, RPGs, MMORPGs, adventures, some action games, most simulators, slow-paced games, some racing and sports games, tycoons, strategies (but not tactical ones), etc., all these games are better off with v-sync, particularly when there isn't a lot of rapid action and there are cut scenes.

I couldn't play with v-sync on in some other games, though, especially not online shooters.

Plus the tearing isn't anywhere as bad on my R6950 and HZ27WC as it was before.

I use V-Sync all the time, can't stand the tearing..

Does anyone know WHY V-Sync feels less responsive? I don't see why with the speeds graphics cards can run games at, getting a perfectly 60Hz output would be difficult...?

Well i just turned it off last night for a quick game of RO2 beta. FPS was around 50-70 anyway so no major tearing noticed.

But I totally owned with the bolt action rifle. Coincidence?

vsync is the devil, adding weird mouse lag and odd smoothing. Perhaps not so bad in something single player or slow - although I don't like it on any occasion - but it makes the difference in being able to compete or not in something fast and twitchy.

Agreed. Same with Quake. When it comes to basic gameplay mechanics and features, current engines have taken a step back from the old.

I haven't looked it up but I'd hazard a guess that d3doverrider would be detected as a hook/hack and possibly get you VAC/Punkbuster banned and such?

I think I may just have to suck it up and stick with it off.

Vtec9k I feel like I just ruined your life man.. sorry :(

lots of recent console ports seem to handle crappily with vsync on, it never used to be a problem i'm curious how they broke it.
