I've been patiently waiting to upgrade my RTX3080 but even with the release around the corner I'm not sure I'm happy to pay more than £1k for a new GPU, so just looking at what the red side offers - The 7900XTX.

Current PC Specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Corsair 64GB DDR4 3600
RTX 3080
Corsair HX1200 PSU

Samsung 49" G9 -5120x1440p

Mainly play FPS and racing games but want to get more into other genres as I've now got rid of PS5 so PC is my only gaming system and want to play games on Ultra quality.

I'm also waiting to upgrade to AM5 (9800x3d) sometime in the new year when stock is available again but would the 7900XTX be sufficient enough for my needs or are the 5XXX nvidia series expected to be marginally better?

Might as well for 8000 series then :)

But if you don't have the patience to wait get the cheapest 2nd hand 7900xtx you can find or 4080 super in good condition.

With that monitor being so close to 4K and also 240 Hz, you need all the horse power you can get.

I have a 7900 XT which I sometimes use for 4K60 native, and it's fine for that, but sounds like you're going to be wanting to have upscaling turned on whatever GPU you go for, in which case DLSS is far superior to FSR in general. Although your monitor has a total pixel count close to that of a 4K, it looks like the pixel density is about that of 1440p, and the gap in quality between FSR and DLSS is more noticeable at that level than at 4K.

If I were you I'd be holding out for one of the new 5xxx series cards with hopefully plenty of VRAM. If FSR could pull level with DLSS in image quality, then it might be a different story.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, I think the best thing is to wait another month or so.

The question now is, do I upgrade to AM5 :D

I have a similar setup (5800X and RTX3080).

Planning on upgrading to the 7/9800X3D, as that would be a significant upgrade - should also stay relevant for quite some time. Will see what Nvidia announce in Jan; the 5080 will be a decent buy if it's on-par with with 4090.

Yep exactly what I'm keeping an eye out for too.

We're less than a month away from new GPUs targeting your exact budget...

If the 5080 gives same performance of 4090 that's going to be the one I'll be looking to get.

January rolls round...

RTX 5090 - £2,500
RTX 5080 - £1,300
RTX 5070 - £700

No £1,000 GPUs until the 5070 Ti, which launches at £900 later in the year :p

Still going to make a saving versus buying now though.

"The more you buy, the more you save".

Jensen, is making us do it...The power of his oven.

I would wait a month, then the prices of AMD cards will drop, for example 7900 XTX. You can make a decision on what the reviews of the new tech is in terms of its relative performance.

Depends on how much you think the cost of whole platform upgrade is worth it. You do still have the option of 5800X3D or 5700X3D on AM4 for cheaper CPU upgrade.

But for GPU defo wait. Worst case, you'll just buy end up buying a 7900XTX for current pricing, but at least by waiting you can confidently make a decision.
