Wait for 5XXX or 7900XTX?

Funny you mention that I was actually looking at the 5700X3D to replace the 5800X, the switchover would be minimal in £ for me.

Paired with the 3080 at ultrawide 1440p is there going to be a noticeable difference in games like Black Ops 6 / Warzone?
That's probably best option for now if your not wanting to spend like £300 on a new board and ram + whatever ££ for CPU you went for

I'm happy to wait a bit for 9800x3d to come back into stock and even then for the 7800x3d prices to come down back to reality a bit and maybe jump on that in Q1 2025.

Couple of years ago I switched from the 5900x to 5800x3d and was pleased the the move. It's was only for gaming and general performance, smoothness, VR, FPS lows were a fair bit better and made it worthwhile.

Am now in a similar position to yourself, with an RTX 3080 (10GB) at 1440p ultrawide and confused as to what to do as well. 5080 that offers close to 4090 performance for the £1000 mark seems to be too optimistic by the sounds of it!

Impossible to make a suggestion based on that we know nothing about pricing or performance. Any speculation is just that, speculation.

RTC 5000 series could be insanely badly priced or badly specced or great value and nobody knows for sure at this moment.

If a cheap 7900XTX came on the market and you wanted to game during Xmas, go for it.

Yeah I mean I'm not having a hard time gaming at the minute but just a case of wanting to crank things up to Ultra now, for now I can wait for a few months still, not a problem.

Yeah best bet is wait, as you said.

See if someone offloads an 4080 Super (or an 7900 XTXX) at a decent price on the used section or if Nvidia decides not to charge insane money for the RTX 50 series (unlikely), go for that once reviews are in.

We can, however, predict with some probable accuracy metrics based on what we know about specs, current market and past pricing:

5090 - 60% faster than 4090, £2300 street price
5080 - 10% slower than 4090, £1200
5070 ti - 10% faster than 4080 Super, £900
5070 - 4080 Super/7900xtx (with much better RT) performance, £750
8800 xt - slightly below 4080 performance (raster and RT), £600

In sum, wait two weeks and get a card that's overall better (slightly slower raster, much faster RT) than a 7900xtx for £600. If it was me, the only way I'd consider a 7900xtx now is a) you need a card immediately, b) you can find one for £600 or below, c) you absolutely need 24GB on a card and want to spend under £1600.

daft people. My last phone was £150 and it's great. Fast, plenty of storage, big screen, etc.

Oh well; you can check the mobile phone thread in these forums to find lots of people spending that or more every year on a iPhone/galaxy

More than a fair comment - I just hope that Nvidia doesn't get greedy again and make the 5090 a £3k card (or higher).

People have shown that they will pay a ton of money for the best and pricing isn't really an issue for quite a large number of buyers (not to say everyone can afford it but pricing for the 4090 went up when there was a shortage so yeah).

Nvidia might look at the Intel B580 and 7900XTX and 7900XTXX filling the midrange segment, shrug and just entirely ignore their current pricing model.

Edit: I’m speculating on so much but I do agree with hartmattan

yeah makes me sick that a lot of people are ok with paying that much, that keeps prices high ripping people off.

I can afford that but no way would I spend that much, it would pay towards a new boiler.

Agreed - it’s crazy.

I’m very very cheap so when I upgrade, it’s usually the best value option. If I saw a cheap used 7900XT(XX) for sale and want to play games during Xmas and just enjoy the festive season and delayed any purchase of an RTX 50 series by a year, so be it.

January rolls round...

RTX 5090 - £2,500
RTX 5080 - £1,300
RTX 5070 - £700

No £1,000 GPUs until the 5070 Ti, which launches at £900 later in the year :p

Still going to make a saving versus buying now though.
mmmm if the 5070 drops at £700 tempted to get a 4070 super now my 6700xt is fine but could do with a bit more grunt

I doubt nV will lie down in the mid range on pricing considering that's where the volume is.

If 5090 amd 5080 pricing is outlandish nV will get none of my money: I'll either "downgrade" to an 8800xt or just sit on my 6950xt back-up card for a while.

Agreed, I just wonder if they won’t start moving all the price sliders up a little?

E.g., 5070 moves from £700 to £750 (ish) and 5080 moves from £1300 to £1350 (ish).
