Wait for 5XXX or 7900XTX?

Is the 7800X3D at £349 a reasonable price? I'm contemplating just passing on the wait for 9800X3D to come back in stock and grab 7800X3D at £349. This would probably give me more funds towards a 5080 too.

I think that was the price it fell to before the surge when the 9800x3Ds flew off the shelves.

Personally, unless if you had specific reason for the 9800x3D (potential use of all 4 banks of RAM) the performance difference between the two should be close enough where going cheaper would not be a bad thing. Especially since you're not aiming for a 5090 to push hard, and only a 5080, so you shouldn't see much difference except in some very specific scenarios between the two CPU's on that GPU (if that).

I don’t think the 9800X3D is £150+ better; obviously would be nice to be on the latest model but the 7800X3D is still a beast.

Even with a 5080, you’ll be GPU limited unless pushing crazy frames for competitive gaming.

Sorry for the blondeness here, what do you mean by potential use of all 4 banks of RAM? Plan is to just run 2 x 16gb DDR5 6000mt CL30 sticks in there but sounds like with a 7800X3D, don't think I'd never need more but would I not be able to use all 4 banks in the future for some reason?

There are some motherboard/cpu combos available at competitors which bring a potential 7800X3D / ROG Strix B650E-F & the aforementioned RAM to around £650 which seems quite ideal.

Currently, the only confirmed 4 x XXGB DDR5 (to get 128GB+ of RAM) that's confirmed to be working at full speeds (6000MT), is the 9000 series of CPU's with the X870E motherboards. There's talk by others that other combinations of the X870E with older CPUs work to get 128GB+ working at full speeds, but these haven't been full proven and confirmed. So if you want 128GB+ of RAM running at full speeds (via 4 x XGB sticks), then that'll be a reason to grab the 9800x3D (or other 9000 series CPU).

Right now, you can populate all banks (x4) with the 7000 series CPUs but in most cases, the max RAM speeds gets dropped to 3600MT which is a heavy drop in performance for games. But otherwise, capacity wise, no difference between the 7000 seris and 9000 series CPUs.

Learn something new everyday, thanks for the info.

Don’t think this is going to be an issue for me as I doubt I’d ever be in that situation but I’m going to sleep on this deal and see tomorrow whether to pull the trigger or not.

If AMD are looking at just mid tier ranges with their next gen, does that mean that the 7900XTX will still be their fastest card? If so, I assume that they won't be dropping the range?

I'd expect the 8900XTX (or whatever they call it) to be a better overall card, and hopefully more complete in terms of RT and ML (maybe they're saving that for the next next gen).

We don't really know what the next mid-range looks like, but I can't image that they won't have a card that's better than the 7900XTX; it's just unlikely to be as performant as a 5080. If it's close but cheaper, then it should sell well.

So hard to keep up if there's going to be an xtx card anymore some of you are saying they will only have midrange cards done of you are saying there will be xtx cards.

If they class my 7900xtx as mid range then I'm happy with that, I think it's a fantastic 4k card.

Rumour the next gen "8800XT" will be similar to 7900XT.

Doubt it'll be £200-£250 though.

Sucks that even the 580 at close to £300 isn't exactly brilliant. :-/ it's sort of OK.

I've taken the view for a while now that if you're always chasing the latest tech then you're always going to view your hardware as obsolete which is expensive at best, and unhealthy at worst. Personally I'm finally looking at upgrading my kit in time for exodus, so I'm keeping an eye out for a decent deal for the 7900xtx or a decent 4080/90 deal.
