Warhammer 40k book recommendations

Recently got through Tales of Heresy and Fallen Angels. Tales of Heresy was very good. Angrons story was VERY sad and made the Emperor look like a complete door handle. One of the stories towards the end of the book was also very good especially when it comes to questioning religion.

Fallen Angels was ok, it wasn't fantastic like say Legion or Mechanicum. A decent(ish) follow up to Descent of Angels but I think Fallen Angels will just turn out to be a placeholder in anticipation of the 3rd Dark Angels book.

Just started reading A Thousand Sons. Very VERY good so far and I'm not even halfway through it yet. Actually feel quite sad for Magnus but at the same time feel like slapping him down for his arrogance.

Finished Legion which i have to say has to be the weakest book so far. It was still really good but didnt get good till the last half of the book.

Currently on page 135 chapter 7 on Battle to the Abyss, and i have to say its pretty good.

I'm currently about halfway through A Thousand Sons and am really enjoying it. Magnus us a wonderful character, as are the legion as a whole. I love the Egyptian "Mysterious" feel to them.

I don't know about anyone else but I found Prospero Burns massively disappointing next to A Thousand Sons. Really surprising considering it's an Abnett book. The intro was very slow and the title is really misleading as the Battle for Prospero is barely mentioned. The only good bit about it are the revelations about the trial.

For an Abnett book I found it really hard to get into. The 2nd half of the book is miles better but it's a slog to get there.

Overall a disappointment in the series but one of very few.

Still my fav 40k author tho.

I really liked Prospero Burns. Ok, the title was a tad misleading, but I think it gave a better insight into the Space Wolves than what you usually see in 40k books.

Well I enjoyed reading the Horus Heresy books despite being on a Droid using ezpdf viewer that I took the plunge:

Not bad 14 books for $40 - time to work through them again in a bit more leisurely manner and will pick up Prospero Burns at some point on the way through :) Really enjoyed the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies too as it happens :)

I'm on the second story of the "The Lost" omnibus. Abnett has done a fine job with the Ghost's series, it's almost sad the way it's all getting a bit bleak though. :(

The only thing I don't like is the rather casual way Chaos space marines are despatched. In the Heresy series the Marines are depicated as being virtually unstoppable, however, here it's all a bit 'Chaos marine? Yeah, whatever. Have some of this, son!'

Well i finished Battle to the Abyss last night and i have to say i really enjoyed it. Infact i thought it was better than Legion, it was great to read about a certain new space marine chapter.
Got the nex book, Mechanicum on its way im sure it will be pretty damn good.

Prospero Burns was a disgrace. Did Abnett even read the blurb?

The Emperor is enraged. Primarch Magnus the Red, of the Thousand Sons Legion, has made a catastrophic mistake that endangers the safety of Terra. With no other choice, the Emperor charges Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves, with the apprehension of his brother from the Thousand Sons home world of Prospero. This planet of sorcerers will not be easy to overcome, but Russ and his Space Wolves are not easily deterred. With wrath in his heart, Russ is determined to bring Magnus to justice and cause the fall of Prospero.

Can someone tell me what the HELL anything in that book has to do with the above?! Besides that, congrats Abnett, you've succeeded in creating the most boring lead character in a novel EVER!

Yeah totally seeing Marmite reviews about PB, not sure if want right now, that said might be one to pick up 2nd hand on the bay or suchlike.

*edit*

Just realised, the US pricing on Black Library is awesome :D £7.99 in the UK, $8.99 in the US - Nice!

i cant believe the black libraries inability to put books on their ebook store. no full series just random odd books, almost completely ignoring their main series.

SPOILERS

I've put that up there just in case anyone thinks what I'm writing is considered a spoiler but I think most of know the fluff surrounding the rise of chaos.

To me, the more I read the Horus Heresy books, the more they paint the emperor in a poor light.

He ignores the calls for him to stay in the crusade. He upsets pretty much everyone by going back to Terra. He is far too heavy handed when certain primarchs don't behave exactly as He wants them too. He leaves it a bit late to tell off one primarch and his actions only spur said primarch further down the wrong path.

All in all, the HH books are making the Emperor look like he makes one big mistake after another.

The Emperor is a fanatic. He is Hitler taken to Galactic levels. His supreme power and single mindedness are keeping the human race united at the cost of billions of lives, both human and Xenos.

He isn't a nice guy :)

However - this is one of the main points of the 40k universe. It's intended to be dark and to have very few indeed truly 'nice' characters and motives. The Emperor is a wonderful example of a complex hero who is woefully flawed in many ways. He has seen the future and how to save humanity, but the cost is terribly high, and he has the will to pay it (or to make humanity pay it).

He is also absolutely necessary for the continuation of the human race. Without him there is no interstellar travel, leaving humanity ripe for the plucking by Eldar, Orc, Chaos, Tyrranid etc.

It's one of the reasons I love the books so much.
