Warhammer 40k (Henry Cavill and Amazon)

Anyone able to recommend some top teir books in the 40k universe - that's not the horus heresy (picked a couple of those up 4 odd years ago and was very underwhelmed)
I've always had a soft spot for the Gaunts Ghosts books, down and dirty with the Imperial Guard and their inquisitor boss. It helps somewhat that the author is actually quite good and does some good sci-fi outside the warhammer universe.

Just had time to actually get caught up in a few things.

Looks like he got his spot as executive producer :)
championed by Henry Cavill, who stands ready to take his place as executive producer – bringing his pen, sword and/or spear to the project.

Same, some of the best stories are about the imperial guard rather than the Astartes. Would be a good introductory to the 40k universe.

I just think the chances of the debut show/movie not having GW's main miniature seller in them is as close to zero as can be. Maybe they do Gaunt's Ghosts at some point but for the first thing? It's definitely space marines, probably Primaris something.

40k is something I know nothing about.

DnD, other TTRPGs yes. But 40k?never played it.

Id certainly watch it if it was good.

Personally I really enjoyed the dnd movie. And critical role adaption Vox machina was good too. It wasn't amazing but a decent 8/10.i believe Vox Machina was amazon too right?

Your missing out, the 40k lore stuff is awesome. Stupendously silly and OTT their has only been one decent fit for TV and that was a fan made mini shorts called "Asartees"

I hope whatever they do we get an intro.
A ten minute history of 40000 years leading to present day ...

Id love to see a load of little side nöds and hints at characters and general old night fluff.

I suspect it's gonna be a detective/ inquisition story.... Sadly

Bit surprised that this is going on Amazon. Don't Warhammer have their own streaming service? I suppose getting more eyes on it and all that, but I would've thought this would be a big draw to their own streaming service.

As much as I would love hours of space marines smashing things up, it will probably have to be based around the more "mortal" lines for the initial release.

We already know Cavill wont be in series 1 as an actor as he wants to play one of the bigger more badass dudes.

How would they get the money to make it?

I have no idea about their business model and actual costs for producing and marketing a show so I'm talking out my behind a bit, but Games Workshop made over £200m between May-Nov 2023, with close to £100m pre-tax profit. I would say it has some pulling power at least, and together with a a big name like Henry, maybe there would have been some compromises with budgets and such, but I can't imagine they would have too much trouble finding investment if they really wanted it.

But like I said, the increased exposure with going with an established streaming service probably offsets the effort finding investment.

100-200 million doesn't go far in ambitious/good sci-fi or fantasy budgets these days, long gone is the time when you could pop down to the local sandpits to film it, and their fans are at this point used to the likes of at least StarGate, modern StarTrek (not the polystyrene boulders and wobbly walls of the original series), The Expanse etc.

Also whilst GW have their own streaming service but it's not geared up/doesn't have the reach of say Prime Video, and no internal experience of large scale, complex TV production, so if they spend 50 million making a TV series they need to make at least that much back off their own streaming service in new subs, which is very unlikely, meanwhile that 50 million for Amazon is small change as content for it's millions of prime customers and if it brings in a few more then that's good.

IIRC GW are very careful with debt/how much they invest at any time and how much they keep in reserve as I believe they've had a couple of occasions where they were in some financial trouble due to things like expanding too fast.
Basically dealing with Amazon might mean GW are putting very little money of their own at risk, with their investment being the rights to certain parts of the IP for a limited (but extendable) period.

When the time comes, just remember to state definitively and with conviction that ultramarines are arsebiscuits, and that you would never consider any other army but Tau.

More mainstream the better.
