Warhammer Total War Confirmed

Never been interested in the warhammer franchise but for some this is interesting me is it easy for new players to pick up? Or is there a steep learning curve?

I am not a huge fan, but am really enjoying this :)

Probably a steeper curve if you haven't played a Total War game before, but there certainly seems to be a lot to pick up (I quite like that it doesn't seem dumbed down).

Okay, being dumb here, am playing as empire and took most the middle map. However want to take the north before moving south but its all cold / frosty up their so massive amounts of attrition. Any way to mitigate it for Empire players? Few perks you can use on your leaders only seem to reduce it a tiny amount really.

You should enjoy it, for me it's been the easiest to pick up and play out of the entire total war franchise, and ive played all except attilla.

Getting wound up by the different faction traits though, not being able to capture certain settlements is a pain and so is dwarf movement speed being exactly one tile shorter than orcs on the campaign map. Its ruined my latest play through as I simply can't catch their armies and the just sprint round the map razing my territories before I can catch them.

Never played a Total War game before myself (despite owning a few on Steam). It took me a hour or so to get used to the at first clunky seeming controls (they aren't really). There are a few little tricks that I didn't know at first that made things much easier, like being able to lock unit formations, using the arrow keys to move units around and also holding alt to change a units location without hanging their formation.

You'll soon get the hang of what units beat what and how not to get totally owned.

Theres a capture all settlement mod on the workshop and 8 posts up from your post I've linked the extra movement mod in your own territory to combat the silly chasing around.

Are you using the underground movement ability as well? greater range with those.

You can travel through the underway as Dwarves and pretty easily cut off most other armies.

Orcs are gone on my game, got a huge power block now as Zhufbar and Karak Hirn (think that's the faction immediately to my West) all came into confederation so I now own around about 7 full provinces and started tangling with the Vamps with all their blinking agents.

The Everchosen has shown up now though so all of a sudden everyone wants to be my mate :p

I'm playing as Vampires now and the Greenskins own everything south of my starting city.

They ask me for 3000 gold every turn now and it's starting to get expensive, however if I declare war on them they will annihilate me.

I also made the mistake of making the other vampires a vassal and they spiralled out of control and took me ages to beat back down.

Is there a simple way of getting back the smaller settlements without attacking my allies? I've got the orcs on the run in the south in alliance with the Barak Varr Dwarfs but they keep hoovering up the minor settlements while i'm capturing the major settlements, then having problems getting them upgraded with all the decent stuff.

In the later game, you can do a diplomatic deal in which you take over all their settlements and units.

I am at approx turn 150 now. The Chaos over-extended and blew themselves up before I could face them. Vampires went all in against the northern Dwarfs, I stepped in as their last capital was under siege. I went in with a surprise attack and laid waste to their armies. I will take my time now and finish off the rest of their settlements.

Computer seems to be able to do siege assaults much more efficiently than I can, I will need to read up on tactics.

I don't think AI necessarily does sieges better it's just they work out their results based on the more likely to win and it seems to not really bother assigning losses when it's a high % win. As an example I had 2 sieges against pretty identical Orc armies auto genned one and killed 840 and lost about 20 guys, same battle when I fought (my little one wanted to see a battle :p) it I lost around 150/200 taking the walls. There is no possible tactic that will allow you to stomp a wall with only 20 losses, IMO it's just a flaw in the auto gen results.

I have the option to confederate with them, if they will agree to it, at the moment, so i'm assuming that I will get extra option later then? (I'm only about 50 turns if if that helps.)

It's kind of annoying as i'm limited with my option now when trying to expand the holds that I do control.
