Warhammer Total War Confirmed

I guess my hint earlier was a bit vague :p

Yeah it all makes sense now :p

Still stand and bang time with the Vamps but it seems that Zhufbar have been the anvil for a long time and the Empire have been hammering them, they have anout 4/5 territories left so they should go down quickly them it's all good guys left. Just need to try and get the Empire onside then I guess that it is us against Chaos!

Let's just say the vamps are kinda rich too :p

Man with all the Lord and tech buffs Dwarves Warriors, Quarrellers-are-too-good-in-melee and Grudgethrowers are almost overpowered. I have an army comprised purely of those that is doing very well, in fact I added cannons and thought they were a bit meh.

What are the most effective Dwarves units to have, is it even worth pumping money into the highest unit tiers?

You should enjoy it, for me it's been the easiest to pick up and play out of the entire total war franchise, and ive played all except attilla.

Getting wound up by the different faction traits though, not being able to capture certain settlements is a pain and so is dwarf movement speed being exactly one tile shorter than orcs on the campaign map. Its ruined my latest play through as I simply can't catch their armies and the just sprint round the map razing my territories before I can catch them.

I may be playing it less than ideally (Ok, I know I am) but my strategy is to take over a settlement and then stay in the province within reasonable distance until I get the first guard room upgrades and then move on to the next areas methodically and install one Lord per province in high risk provinces so I can raise troops quickly if need be.

I go for defensive walls in pretty much every settlement (even at the cost of productivity) because I think that's what any Dwarf worth his salty beard would do, and as a result the AI has a really hard time assaulting me without uber stacks.

I haven't really bothered with defences unless I know I'm at risk.

Final hold out dwarfs (Karadin I think it was) joined my confederacy and that unlocked Ungrim :D

Thought I was the boss, his first action? Run away screaming as first turn I had him Archeon showed up with 3 death stacks so decided discretion was the better part of valour :p

It's on with chaos now!!

the higher tier units with the dwarves feel more situational than lower tier.

slayers seem good against trolls. gyrocopters are fun to command.

the flame units can work in some situations when they do work they totally melt the nme units.

the upgraded cannon units are great when you need to take down forts. no need to siege for 10-15 turns, you can just take them down with two siege cannons.

one thing before I turn in for the night.

those huge vampire bats are OP.

Is that the Vargheists? They are a PITA.

Despite being over 100 turns in I've barely just unlocked everything but I agree with the above that dwarf "special" units don't feel all that special, more just solid upgrades than anything else.

Slayers surprised me with their uselessness, yeah they'll fight to the death but most everything murders them pretty fast and they aren't half as useful as I was expecting against monstrous foes.

There's a melee unit, ironbreakers, they appear about the same time/way as hammerers. They have the blasting charges the upgraded miners unit have AND beastly defences. If you ever want a shield wall that'll also help the quarrellers rout each unit in turn, they're the fellas for it :)
Keep some hammerers around to smash any monstrous units that charge your line.
Agreed on quarrellers being a bit OP. I usually have 8 units per army. While cannon is a bit meh (beyond busting towers, then gates so your quarrellers can move up and pepper defenders on the wall) the fire cannon is... something else entirely though :D (gyrocopters are fun too).

My best army atm is 6 ironbreakers, 6 quarrellers, 4 hammerers, 2 fire cannon, 2 gyrobombers and a thane whos a one man army. If you focus fire a unit with all your quarrellers it needs EXTREMELY good morale to take more than 2/3 volleys before it's half dead and broken. Certainly against the greenskins. You can pepper each stack in turn till it breaks (I usually watch morale and as soon as it routs, pause and switch) go down most of their line, rake them a second time once they regroup and return, they don't usually get a 3rd try.

If you have a big stack as above for most fights (play defensive) and a second group with hammerers, regular cannon etc that can either swap in some units or just join the fight anyway (mostly for attacking on sieges) there's little can match the dwarves.

Quite amused how many of us went dwarves first :p

Played this abit last night, started as empire just to get a feel of things actually enjoyed it although I only did the tutorial battle(If that's what it was) and the first battle.

Any recommendations on tutorial videos to watch while at work?

Ive been having a great time playing as Orks

I found quite quickly if you get yourself fairly established you can convince the other Ork factions to ally and eventually join as a confederate

so when I confederated with an ork faction north it fully bumped my economy at this time chaos was making its way down, I used all the resources to conquer the south and make about 5 stacks of armies including the WAAAAGH army you get when your on a stomping frenzy

chaos didn't stand a chance by the time they came by and said hello,

I also love the mechanics of the Orks having to kick them back in line frequently make sure I have plenty of boss huts etc

Grimgor is amazing once hes buffed up and geared very little can challenge him, got him fighting the chaos leader sigvald, it was like that seen in the first avengers movie with the hulk vs loki :D

Good tips thanks man! I may do a custom battle and try all the Dwarf units just to test for myself, so far I have resisted doing that. My plan is to only play Dwarves until I complete the campaign, and then go through the other races in turn, again not doing custom battles so that when I play them I am genuinely seeing everything for the first time.

Plus I have seen there are some good balancing mods being produced, like nerfing overpowered and overly aggressive enemy heroes and also stopping artillery and ranged spam. The amount of longevity from this game will be just immense even without mods. It can literally only get better.

Good times are ahead, and just imagine what it will be like when diverse races like High and Dark Elves and Skaven and Lizardmen get added...

NYYAARRRGHHHHHH... *spaffs on keyboard*

:o

I was quite gutted last night....doing my first campaign with the Greenskins (love them)....took the whole of the bad lands, ready for the Warriors of Chaos to come try their luck....only to find they got wiped out by the AI.....the game introduces them as some wave of Armageddon and they cant even beat the other AI factions......so now im sitting here with all my armies wondering who to go and smash next.

Well, at least it's realistic, but look at it this way... you contributed absolutely nothing to the fight and everyone had to do it without you. :p

The bats took out your siege cannons didn't they grumpy toes? :)

Siege Cannons? Where do you get those from?

I have the regular ones and find they work ok in sieges. I stack my army in one corner to minimise the incoming fire from the towers. Once the 1 / 2 towers that are able to fire back have been taken out I can turn my attention to the troops on the walls.

Also looking forward to other races. My dwarf campaign is more or less wrapped up (I think) stomped greenskins and vamps. Erm... "explored" the north (*cough* hint *cough*). So there's only really me, the barbarians and the various human factions left (and the humans are all in military alliances with me).
I guess I could try and get them all to be vassals :p probably get a bit tedious though :D
