Washing machine problem

Actually, although the cap seems to fit perfectly, I'm able to move the valve lever a a few millimetres and that lets water come out, albeit not shooting out like a jetstream as it does without the cap. So it works but not foolproof. I don't know if this is normal or not.

I just bought a Samsung 8Kg ecobubble from Currys for £349, it comes Tuesday. :) Just as well, my laundry basket is starting to honk a bit :p

I know that feeling well. My machine gave up the ghost right before a bank holiday weekend, so I had to wait even longer for the delivery of my new machine.

On a positive note, there's nothing like a few loads of laundry to help you familiarise yourself with the machine. :)

Yeah, I'm excited about Tuesday. :D They're going to text me Monday night to give me a 3 hour window so I don't have to stay in all day.

One thing it doesn't look like it has, and it's a small detail, is to show where it's got to in the wash cycle.
Like, on some other brands, there's a column of lights, and there's labels next to each light which illuminate as it goes from start, to wash, to rinse, to spin, etc. Or maybe it's built into the screen and will show up during a cycle. Not important of course but would be nice. :p

There have been a couple of instances today where during a rinse cycle the drum made a few clockwise rotations to agitate the clothes, filled with more water, then drum made a few anticlockwise rotations. Other than that, I've not been able to get it to rotate again. it just fills with water, then stops, I have to manually nudge the dial to move it on at which point it will make a buzzing noise. Move it on again, fill with more water, and so on. Eventually I'm able to get it to drain the water and open the door to an empty drum. In the video you'll hear the gurgling from the pipes under the kitchen sink when it removes the water.

Sounds like the programme selector has gone doubtful you'd find a replacement a machine that old its probably mechanical rather than electronic and not worth it the expense/hassle anyway. Whatever you do don't buy another Hotpoint was looking at Which? reports for washers myself recently as mine died as well Hotpoint were one of the worst on test for efficiency and reliability.

I used a mole grip on mine.

Did you buy the rubber washer to go with it as it won't seal without it?

Toolstation sell the brass caps without the washer for some odd reason, whereas Screwfix and others come with the correct washer.

Yeah, could be that, and I think the motor is stuffed as well. Samsung being delivered tomorrow by Currys between 7.40am and 11.40am.

Thank you Simon, rubber washer didn't occur to me. You nailed it! I went back to Toolstation and they still couldn't offer me a rubber washer for the brass cap, he said they don't come with one. Very odd, so I got a refund, went to Screwfix and got one that does come with a rubber insert. Fits much more snug and absolutely no leaks now even if the valve switch were to get accidentally nudged to the slightly on position. :)

Was it this one, for £1.89? If so, I might get one for my hot outlet, just for peace of mind. I am weary of the one review which states it doesn't come with the rubber washer shown in the picture.

The blanking caps that come without a washer can be used with a standard washing machine hose washer. Toolstation and Screwfix both sell those washers for about a £1 for 10.

Yeah Simon, I just noticed the black rubber washer/gasket inserted in the end of my cold water valve, so I'm thinking the hot water washer might actually be stuck in the end of the red plastic nut on the hot water hose I'd removed.

It's not that one darael, and I can't seem to find it on their website. But mine was slightly less at £1.35, it's 3/4" and it comes with a black disc rubber insert which is visible in my photo.

I flooded part of my kitchen tonight. After putting the cap on I decided to unscrew it again to check something, but I inadvertently was unscrewing the whole valve from the main water pipe instead of the cap and warm water gushed out everywhere like in a Carry On movie. I was like "oh no..no no!!", panicked a bit but eventually turned the main hot water inlet lever to off and spent the next hour mopping up. :p All ok now and ready for installation.

Cheers, I'll perhaps phone and ask. Is there an item number or something I can use?

I sympathise with you mopping up your kitchen. A couple of years ago I set my washing machine away on a cottons cycle and left it to do it's thing. I came back to empty the machine, only to find that my kitchen had been completely swamped. Completely confused, upset and angry all at the same time I cleaned up and eventually discovered that a PVC pipe behind a unit somehow came apart at the joint and it just needed popping back in. Why it decided to come apart when it did, I don't know. I was just glad it was in the middle of summer, so my kitchen dried out pretty quickly.

Lucky you found the reason for the flood! I've had mild flooding in the past and that was because the pipe or spigot under my sink that the washing machine drainage hose was attached to had also come loose and wasn't properly screwed down.

Yes, I found the item number on the receipt, it's 39553. Actually, with that number I found it on their site. https://www.screwfix.com/p/bsp-blank-nut-x/39553?_requestid=879981

Ecobubble arrived early this morning. I removed the 3 transit bolts, connected it, adjusted the feet, did the calibration and doing my first wash. No leaks. Loving it so far and very quiet. And it plays tunes, lol. Looking forward to seeing what the final spin will sound like. :) So heavy to manouevre though compared to the old machine! Talk about sad, I'm sitting here watching the whole cycle like it's a TV :p
