We'd be taking 4 centrebacks most likely, the chances of him needing to play that many games is unlikely, though it is a gamble.
 
What's the point in gambling on it?

Rio, Terry, Upson, Lescott/Richards. Lescott covers left back, Richards covers right.
 
As much as I think Richards has potential, he's looked a bit shaky at centre back for me. Though that 5 you posted certainly covers the options well.
 
Difficult one to choose who should be on the plane if Bridge and Cole aren't available. I'd say you could maybe get away with Lescott as cover but the trouble is he hasn't really played LB for some time now.

Warnock is probably in the box seat right now, playing regularly at one of the big7 and doing a job in an unassuming manner. I had high hopes for him after seeing him for Liverpool in Europe but his career has never really kicked on.

As for the whole King/Woodgate thing, I was vilified in some quarters for daring to suggest preseason that they were injury prone, well so far this season they've managed a grand total of 15 league appearances between them, compared to say Gallas and Vermaelen with well over 50 league starts. I rate Woodgate and would have him in a 23 man squad if he was fully fit and had a run of 15+ consecutive games under his belt, but he won't.

Lets be honest here there has to be a question mark hanging over Rio's fitness this year and while he is too good to leave at home, you can't risk taking too many cripples with you in the hope that it all works out fine. From what Capello has stated in the past he wants to take players playing regularly for their clubs and while he might take a risk on an exceptional talent with a proven international pedigree, I don't think everyone falls into that category.

I think carragher is solid, experienced, basically very simialr to Terry but can keep his willy in his pants.

Personally I think Woodgate and King are class players, but as has been highlighted are injury prone. Woodgate can still be in the squad, I think it's a bridge too far for King though, such a crying shame as he is ace.

Terry is a pretty good defender but not any better than Carrager... is Carragher ever likely to return if Capello begged him?

Ferninand, Terry, Carragher and Woodgate = awesome.

I'm just so dissapointed in Terry, he is a good player but I just feel that he brings shame to our national team now. Mind you is A. Cole any better? He is a prat as well... are there actually any upstanding England players anymore? After Southgate, Pearce and Shearer etc etc have retired it just seems we are left with chav players from Englands ghetto's.
 
Few years ago Carragher deserved a place but not anymore. He's been very inconsistent this season has made numerous errors. We look more solid in the centre when he's at right back.

Anyway, back on topic.

I think even the most die hard Liverpool fans will admit Carra is now a shadow of his former self, taking him to a World Cup would be a stupid decision, he's simply not good enough.

I don't rate Terry as highly as everyone else seems to, but lol

Walcott is a nice little boy, DM would highly recommend him on the plane ;)

Actually he might recommend Eboue over him :D
 
Milner, Carrick, Rooney (more recently) all seem ok, C.Cole is pretty honest but seems ok, that's from interviews I've seen
